So the guy who won Lanka their world cup and turned them into a major force in intl cricket, gets a royal neglect from its board. The saddest part is even the current captain Sanga hjasnt said a word yet about him. Even the former players who played with Jaya in last 20 years have been surprisingly silent. Wouldnt it be appropriate for a Arjuna or Aravinda to come out and say a few nice words about one of the greatest ever cricketer from Sri Lanka.

Probably if he announces that he will retire after the 5th match tomorrow, he will get a great farewell from his colleagues and SL Board. frankly his reflexes are slowing down and he is not half the player he was in 1996-2002. sadly he has not tried to adjust his approach successfully like SRT did in one dayers. Sanga has dropped enough hints that Sanath is past his prime and should leave the scene. Even the board which brought him back once earlier after he was dropped for a series is not keen on retaining him or issuing any instructions to the team management of tour to pick him in every match. Dilshan has more than adequately replaced him in the top and the steady Tharanga is much more consistent. i dont see Sanath playing till 2011 world cup and he should retire gracefully. Champion player of modest pace attacks on sub continent type pitches and a great player of spin.

Thats not giving him enough credit Rajan unless you think Akram, Younis, Saqlain formed a modest attack. He has absolutely killed almost all new ball attacks of the world, with the exception being Australia's probably. He deserves better from the board, but I am also of the opinion that he ought to retire soon.

^ boss, i am not sure he handled SA attack that well. he was pretty good on sub continet type wickets as i mentioned. but on bouncy pitches or away from sub C, he was not a threat... that is my opinion. Waqar, Akram were certainly not destructive enough, lost their pace and had their share of injuries when he started asserting himself in the top order...He was always a great player of spin ofcourse.

Very very sad indeed. Yes, he is the man who almost single handedly turned Srilanka from minnows to a force in world cricket. SLCB should hang their heads in shame. Irrespective of whether he should retire or not, he remains a legend in Srilanka. Trivila differences should not come in the way of celebrating this occasions. Sanga is such a selfish idiot. I have lost all respect for him today. All his antics can be excused, but this is inexcusable. He should know how to stand by his players and how to respect the seniors and legends in the team. He can drop Jayasuriya if he wants, but as a captain, he has to step forward with some praises for one of the best batsman they ever produced. When Sachin complete his twenty years, not only India, but the whole world was reverberating with eulogies. Sachin of course is far greater than Jayasuriya is, but his contributions should get the deserving respect from within the country at least.

^ we would be missing Aravinda's contribution and also the others like Ranatunga himself as well as the bowlers like Vaas/Murali if we credit Sanath for SL winning the 96 WC and their renaissance . he failed in semis and final.It was a very good team marshalled superbly by the pugnacious Arjuna and the lifted by one SL batsman of that time,the consistently world class-Aravinda and some very useful bowlers.

I was not aware that Waqar and Akram were not destructive enough in 1997 - considering how both continued to play 6 years after that! Nevertheless, everyone has weaknesses. Here's a guy who's changed how LOI cricket is played, and he deserves better than what he's getting. 13000+ runs and 300 ODI wickets - he's been an excellent allrounder as well.

Opposition teams had Jayasuriya at the top of the agenda. But the discussion here is not who contributed the most to Srilanka's rise. The question here is whether he has earned himself a grand celebration at this occasion or not. Sure you are not of the opinion that his contributions to Srilankan cricket is too insignificant to celebrate a 20 years old career?

He is a legend in SL Cricket. deserves a lot of praise and accolades especially considering his contribution as a bowler and a brilliant fielder till some time back. but having said that, i would not be surprised if the SL team management is afraid that he may express his desire to continue for another 2 years, depriving the opportunities for an youngster... That surely should not stop Arjuna/Mendis/Aravinda and their ilk to lavish praise on Sanath.he deserves all the praise he can get , but he does not deserve a place in their team now.( i am one of the fans who spent sleepless nights before/during/after his innings against india,hence i may hold lot of grudges against the man).

Disappointing stuff this. Who can forget his legendary opening stand with Kaluwitharana in the 1996 WC. He was one of the pioneers who changed ODI batting. :hatsoff: Congrats Jayasuriya for 20 glorious years. May you retire in style.

jaysurya was a nemesis for most of teams . especially india in 90s and early 2000s .. he was a legend .. SL need to respect their seniors .. its shocking how they are treating him .. we may soon seem him retiring ..

His peer Mark Taylor retired in 1999 and this guy is still there 10 years on. A 34 year old lad just lost a cricket career because of him.
