Rajiv Posted January 11, 2010 Posted January 11, 2010 I am interested in getting one of these services, any reviews? Strictly from Canadian POV MagicJack has Canadian Numbers now http://www.magicjack.com/9/areacodes.asp This Cantalk9000 seems good too http://www.cantalk9000.com/index.php Now I already have Skype but its buddy with Windows 7, it crashes and I use a vtech Skype phone which dies after the PC has been running for downloads etc, in other words I have to reboot the PC Magic Jack is also USB style and Cantalk is to Router to Phone
clareity Posted January 18, 2010 Posted January 18, 2010 I'm in Canada and love my MJ. The computer must be on and net connected to use it. Wireless is fine. Concurrent data up and downloading will cause interference. I use mine on my notebook whereever there is available wifi, so far Canada, continental USA, Hawii, Carribean, all great. Messages left will show in my email inbox even if MJ is not in use. Calls IN to MJ are long distance unless area code and PREFIX match MJ told me. BUT it does have call display so caller can hang up prior to answer. Number can be called back. FREE CALL. I did order mine from USA site though all say can't. I did and was shipped in 3 days from Ontario. Their telesupport is easy to reach and respond once you learn how. I like much better than voice persons. I don't know about cantalk support. Device is more expensive in any case. Cantalk9000 is different. Computer is not necessary but a wired connection is. You can call ONLY Canada free. MJ includes USA, Puerto Rico, and Canada--all free. Cantalk uses regular phone. MJ used regular phone, mike and headset or USB phone. Options on computer screen for MJ allows device appropriate changes. Now Canadian numbers are available so I think I'm getting a second MJ to leave at home when I travel. I can call out without it looking like I'm calling from the USA, depending what I want. Only MJ negative is me misplacing sometimes. OOPs! Had it 1 1/2 years. Great thing with a notebook, very small. I used to haul a full phone around. Know better now. My fave place to use is in car on a hill overlooking the water. Free wifi quite common now. No intentions of getting cantalk as I don't have ISP, considerable expense. Without it cantalk is useless at home and most accomodation have wireless, not wired for use with travelling. And not sure about Cantalk but I can take my magicjack and use on any computer with signal and my phone or headset or any available. Just make sure computer is okay to use because a small desktop icon WILL appear- virtually impossible to remove. Does nothing unless clicked and then goes to ad screen. CanTalk DOES port numbers. MJ assigns them, you choose only the prefix. If it matters that's a CanTalk plus. MJ is cheaper for the initial year and device. After the first year, MJ is WAY cheaper than cantalk. 59 for 5 years is what I paid. LESS than a buck a month. YEAH! I love the MagicJack and it makes for great customs chat. People want to know and write it down. Awesome device and their latest is free calling from your cell phone at home! Thinking out side the box innnovative devices. If you are sick of being screwed MJ could be great for you. I've never missed Telus and their ridiculous charges AT ALL! Do check options. MJ has a very great many. Good luck. For me it's a no brainer.
