Stats for the Boss - In Test Match Cricket I have a similar thread for the ODIs but since his test match stats are all over the place ... I thought I would create one just for test match numbers. Everyone knows the imprtant numbers i.e career runs , no.of 100s and 50s runs against australia etc etc ... but here we look at it from a slightly different perspective to see how far ahead he is from the pack. He now has 99 (45+54) scores of 50 or more ( the next best is Ponting and Border at 90 ). Just the aggregate run tally from those 99 inngs is more than 10K runs ... 10353 to be precise. Needless to say he is the only one in this particular 10K+ club. Next in line are BCL at 9301 and Ponting at 9147. To give you some perspective this tally is a cool 1500 runs more than any padosee's entire career tally. Of the 54 inngs where he has crossed 50 the breakup is : 7 90s 9 80s 9 70s 14 60s 14 50s Thats a staggering 16 inngs of 80 plus scores of which atleast half of them that should have been converted to a shambar !! Next is his astounding Away record. http://stats.cricinfo.com/ci/engine/stats/index.html?class=1;filter=advanced;home_or_away=2;orderby=runs;template=results;type=batting As I had mentioned sometime back ... he has played in the most number of away test matches. In 92 such Away test matches he has scored 7429 runs at remarkable avg of 55.44 This includes 26 hundreds and 30 fifties. Just that away record is very very close to Sir Garry Sobers career tally in every aspect. To give some more perspective there are only 10 other batsmen who have more career 100s than Boss's away hundreds. The next best guy on that list is RD at 6569 ... and again to give a perspective Ponting is at 4727. This is one tally that Ponting aint going to catch upto. What people dont realize when comparing with Ponting is that Boss has played a disproportionately high no.of matches away from home. Had he played the same number of Test matches at home his record would have been identical to his ODI record which was put beyond anybodies reach atleast a couple of yrs ago. More later .... :winky:

Umm.. about 1000 of those SRT runs and 5 tons at an astronomical average have come AWAY against Bangbros. As great as you try and paint those numbers - alot of those are because of playing a high volume of matches rather than being sheerly a cut above the rest. Dravid in my book is the GREATEST away player in the modern era. Take a look at that FTB Jayawardene. Played about 65 % of his cricket in and around Colombo where is average is 50 % higher than is away average of 43.00

Even supposing that those few Tests against Bangladesh were played against somebody else, I would still not put it past Tendulkar to be where he is right now. But in theory I back your argument. For Indian players, the term 'away' must not include the Indian subcontinent or Sharjah and similar ones. The same applies to Pakistani, SL and Bangladeshi players of course. ________ LINDAMOMX

Thats an awfully weak argument. Sri Lankan pitches are far different to those that you see in India. Taking a look at our record will tell you that we've generally not done greatly there. Pakistan is a whole different story. There is just so much more to those contests than JUST similar environments (in terms of the pitch), and actually, even there, I think Pakistani pitches differ to those in India.

Umm...5 tons in 7 matches @ avge of 140. I wish , I wish. I wish 40% of that kind of performance comes against Saffies in the coming series. We will need him against the rampaging Saffie pace attack, far more than against Bangbros. But I guess the law of averages catches up with the best. :winky:

I hate these comparisons within our own team they tend to end up in running down one or the other player for the sake of arguing.
+1. This seems to be an Indian trait. I am not sure if I have ever seen an Aussie mentioning something about Steve Waugh and a fellow poster immediately rebutting with why Ponting is better. This is an exclusive Indian trait where we run down our own heroes to show our knowledge, of lack thereof. Of course Kapil Dev is sabka baap, so there.

No doubt RD is a truly great player but look at that SR .... that tells you the story ... without stroke makers around him his inngs will generally save you matches. This is not to undermine RD ... as shutting down one end is a great attribute to have in Test match cricket.
That comparison makes no sense, if you have followed India's away matches for a large part of Dravid and SRT's career. Dravid is the greatest ever match saver for us. Countless away matches Dravid just grinded away to secure us a draw. In fact his poor strike rate for the runs his scored is a reason we saved many matches. If you want to compare strike rate compare when we actually win matches - which is why I opine that Veeru is our greatest ever matching winning test batter.

BossBhai, also, I believe Tendulkar averaged 144 against Australia in 2007-08 in 4 tests with 2 tons, so this 5 tons in 7 matches at 138 isn't exclusive to Bangladesh, is it ?

The Indian pitches are more similar to the ones in Sri Lanka and Pakistan than to pitches in Australia or South Africa or New Zealand, right? That was my point. ________ Firegirl Live

Give Tendulkar some passion and intense competition from the opposition. He will be there. I still remember vividly his contests with Allan Donald. Man, that was a fast bowler who was a biomechanical wet dream. To me, he was better than Lee. But I guess the experts are happier with Lee especially because he does not have the build of a Donald and yet he ends up bowling as fast if not faster than the latter. ________ Lolli

When the going gets tough (McWarne' date=' Donald-Pollock) he sucked against them even at home. 00-01 is an exception to that rule.[/quote'] There are always the Debang Gandhis and Saddagopan Rameshs to score against all comers on INdian pitches. But AWAY Dravid was our rock . Our match saver, unparalleled.

Before we go there ... what happened to the ... "ohhh he milked the poor BD" folks ... I see that you quietly ducked that one :--D

you said : SRT milked the BD attack to prop up his away record. I said: RD played in all those matches as well you : quiet me : :hmmm:
Except for the fact that the difference between SRT's overall AWAY average and that purely against Bangladesh is far more than the same for Dravid. In other words, take Bangladesh out of the equation then Dravid leaves SRT further behind in away avgs.
