triam
That's an uninformed intrepretation of yet another clueless journalist. not the gospel for sake! the best players were selected except for saha. but this selection committee has been clueless on one crucial factor all season-playing young players against the stronger cricket of australia and sa. it has been costly all season. can someone hammer it to their thick skulls? this idiocy has been proving costly time and again. even before the toss, i was highly concerned. Best players were selected?? Rohit Sharma is one of the best ahead of Pujara, Pandey, Kohli, Raina and a whole bunch of others?? you knw that is not true. Link to comment

Zap_Brannigan
The why of Saha We played badly. There is not point denying that. Our 1st string bowling wasn't good enough. Our 1st string batsmen failed (166/6 so far for Sehwag, Ghambir, Sachin, Dhoni) after a long time. But the biggest goof-up this test has been Saha selected into the side. What were the selectors thinking ? Is there a power struggle between Selectors and Dhoni that they had to pick only 6 batsmen to make sure Dhoni plays the best domestic batsmen in the last few years ? Or is it merely a bad decision to keep laxman in the mix to things when it was highly unlikely that he was going to play? Or just one of those things that noone could ever predict that the replacement gets injured on the morning of the game? Link to comment
thevortex
taking wickets is the big difference.others are all supporting parts. when it comes to bowling, penetrative bolwers are the key. not numbers. And bowlers tend to be penetrative when they are fresher. One follows the other, really. Link to comment

That COUNTS a lot. also the confidence of making a fifty vs SA and aus in an international match is not something that the likes of pujara and kohli can count on.and pujara has not even played a single international. That matters a lot as well. Link to comment

thevortex
And bowlers tend to be penetrative when they are of better quality. True. And that could have been true if a bowler had been tried. Instead Dhoni took the defensive step of asking Saha to play as a genuine batsman. A waste of a spot in the XI. That is simply inexcusable at this level. Link to comment
urbestfriend
South Africa captain Graeme Smith feels India's "conservative approach" in Nagpur cost them dearly and has said that playing an extra bowler in place of the untested Wriddhiman Saha would have been a more favourable option. "I guess there are two ways to look at it: you [could] take the more confident approach and play the extra bowler," Smith said, reasoning that both Harbhajan Singh and Zaheer Khan had decent records as tailenders. "They went for a more conservative approach and picked Saha at No 7. Maybe they are regretting that now." http://www.cricinfo.com/indvrsa2010/content/current/story/447642.html Even opposition captain says this was defensive approach but Dhoni/Kirsten can't understand this :wall: " Link to comment

Dhoni and Kirsten should ask what Smith considers to be the right approach choice next time round. Link to comment
