thevortex Posted March 11, 2010 Posted March 11, 2010 The reason I appeal for those uncertain decisions to be overturned by the 3rd umpire is primarily because Hawkeye's incidence of portraying the ball as shaving the stumps is just way too high. And if just the lowest part of the ball strikes the stumps - according to Hawkeye -then there is no way that a batsman can be declared out without any doubt. It all boils down to the inaccuracy of the predictive technology. All said and done, this particular Strauss dismissal is not the classic example to be used to discuss the demerits of Hawkeye. In this case I am arguing for an error of commission in the case of Hawkeye as opposed to an error of omission - whatever that means :). I trust you understand what I am referring to here. Now this is something Hill would not be privy to. Just the same as the main umpire does not have the privilege of watching run outs in slow motion. In the ideal scenario, I would have the umpires equipped with a hand held device with a display and have the replays streamed onto this device. All confusion would be eliminated - bar the ones introduced by Hawkeye. :)

If Kumble did not get the verdict in his favour in spite of all that, then how does that help the cause of Hawkeye? I guess this just reaffirms my opinion of Hawkeye. Correct me if I am wrong. no it doesnt.in that series,the Hawkeye was used only till point of impact.so wen everybody it was out,the 3RD Umpire decided it was not out.if u use Hawkeye only upto the point of impact,theres a scope for mistake by 3rd umpire too.thats why endorse using the predictive path of Hawkeye

Tell me then if you believe that Hawkeye has got everything covered to this extent, why do you have the umpires out there? To signal the wides and draw magical powerplay circles in the air?

What I did get convinced about with your post was why the decision has to go back to the on field umpire - in the case of a referral. Not about Hawkeye and its predicted path's veracity per se. I am sorry if that is disappointing. But that is my opinion. Bossbhai - I will make you a deal. When next I see a doubltful representation from Hawkeye I will let you know. Then we can check. I dont know if this particular Test match had questionable decisions. By the way did you catch sight of that Ponting rap in the 3rd ODI which was not given?

But that cannot be used as a defense for Hawkeye and an indictment on the on field umpires in general. That was an aberration. Pure and simple. There could have been other series marred by poor umpiring but arguably the Sydeny one took the cake, so to speak.
