I once remember doing this, about 5 years back. There used to be a cricket website Channel 4 that had this number. The website is still there but the stats section is now unavailable: http://www.channel4.com/sport/cricket/stats/ From whatever I remember at that time Hanif Mohammed of Pakistan came out on tops. I see he ranks fairly high on BB's list as well. BB can you double check you are only including the batsman's teams contribution in the match? In Hanif Mohammed's case his %age should be = Hanif's runs / Total Pakistan runs in the match.

What I understand from above is that 1) Sunny Gavaskar is far and away the best batsman of the 70's and 80's considering the attacks he faced and the attack his own team had to offer. Despite this his % run contribution beats his equally glorified peers like Miandad, Richards, and Greg Chappell. A must in any playing XI. 2) Ditto Brian Lara. A class apart. 3) Sangakarra is one of the top 5 batsman in the last 2 decades and has scored against all comers everywhere. Although Mahela also has a high % his away average in Aus and RSA is down right pedestrian, ditto Moyo and Younis 4) Sehwag is clearly India's premier Test batter in the last 15 years of test cricket or so, followed by SRT. 5) Both Sehwag and SRT are many notches above Hayden and Punter as they have a higher % contribution in match despite playing in a team with a average bowling attack. My top 5 batters for the period 1990 - Date: Lara Sangakarra Sehwag Tendulkar Kevin Pietersen I am convinced this is the best set of test batters in the last 2 decades.

Lurker and BB, based on these pieces of stats and relevant reasoning I have listed my top 5 for the last 2 decades as: Lara Sangakarra Sehwag Tendulkar Kevin Pietersen I would be keen to know your pickings for the top 5 with the reasons.

That stat has the following problems : 1. It favours great batsmen from weaker teams.
I don't think so. That would be the case only if we applied as % of his own team's total in which case he would obviously have a huge chunk. But when he has the highest % contribution across either side even though his side's bowling attack not be all that great, he is a standout, which I think Lara is.
2. It is unfavourable to lower order batsmen especially from the Stronger teams as they will not get as many opportunities to bat as top order and most often their inngs are left high and dry as they are run out of partners.
Agreed in principal. But then they should remain not out and boast of higher averages compared to, top order batsmen , no ? Who are they ? :hmmm:
But otherwise my top 5 for the last 2 decades is : Sehwag Dravid Tendulkar Lara Kallis (tied with Ponting )
Fair enough. I think Dravid is a bit over rated. I don't think Sangakarra has done anything less than what Kallis and Dravid have, in his career so far. He has proved himself everywhere and against all sides. Infact his runs per innings @ 51.XX is at par with the 2 highest of the decade, namely Lara and Sehwag. ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- BB, Your work also reaffirms that Sunny was the greatest batter of his era.

That Lara played in a weak bowling side is a myth. He played : 1. 29/131 tests with Walsh and Ambrose and Bishop. 2. 59/131 tests with Walsh and Ambrose 3. 61/131 tests with Ambrose 4. 78/131 tests with Walsh 5. 80/131 tests with either Walsh or Ambrose

WI team's bowling average for the timespan Lara played his cricket is 33.3 Link: India's bowling average for the timespan either of Viru or SRT have played their cricket is about 35.

I'd exclude Bangladesh and Zimbabwe and re-run the query. These two sides really skew the figures. BTW Patriot...see the magnanimity of the man? Tune itni gaaliyan dee, phirbhi usne nehin mukraya. Boss...:adore:

Besides the minnow factor there is one another issue that worries me ... The % for a batsman is dependent on how much the opposition scores in the match - something that is totally beyond the control of any batsman and obviously has no bearing on the batsmans capabilities.
absolutely agree. but, it would factor in the "batting-friendliness" of the ground. you could argue that you have to exclude the minnows - for example, hayden vs zimbabwe may have a huge effect on pushing him up the ladder. or meaningless draws may too - may be lara's 400 not out. what if you did the stats excluding bd and zim, and excluding drawn tests.
