Pakistan's World Twenty20 squad has been hit by a spate of injuries during the rigorous training camp leading up to the tournament, but captain Shahid Afridi assures that there is "nothing serious". "There have been a few fitness problems but it's natural because the camp has been tough so far. The boys are learning and I'm confident that our fielding will improve," Afridi told the News. The Pakistan team has been undergoing strenuous drills at the National Cricket Academy in Lahore, under new coach Waqar Younis, aimed at raising their fielding standards. Afridi hurt a finger last week, while Gul and Yasir Arafat sustained injuries to the shoulder and calf respectively. Fawad Alam also figures in the list of injured players. Afridi is confident that they will recover well in time for the tournament. "Gul has a shoulder problem but I hope he would be okay in a few days while the rest of the boys should also be fully fit soon," Afridi said. Afridi believes that the drills will pay dividends during the tournament. "There have been a few fitness problems but it's natural because the camp has been tough so far. The boys are learning and I'm confident that our fielding will improve. He said that the team management had plans to ease off the training closer to the tournament, that begins on April 30 in the West Indies. "We will switch to lighter training in the final phase of the camp so that the players are fresh when we leave home to play the Twenty20 World Cup." Pakistan will begin their title defence with group matches against Bangladesh and Australia on the 4th and 6th of May respectively.

How can they get injured? They are not playing in IPL. They will be fresh and raring to go for T20 WC.
their fielding training is more tougher than IPL match.... 4 players injured during training only

The camp for the World Cup, which will be held later this month, is being held under new coach Waqar Younis and the cricketers are going through physically demanding drills in a bid to improve their fielding. Pakistan captain Shahid Afridi injured his finger while attending one of the training sessions last week and now pacer Umar Gul and all-rounders Fawad Alam and Yasir Arafat are also on the injured-list. Gul, who is already struggling for form, has suffered a shoulder injury, Fawad has injured his hand while Arafat is carrying a calf injury. Afridi, however, reported to have said Tuesday that neither of the injuries was of a serious nature. “There is nothing serious. Gul has a shoulder problem but I hope he would be okay in a few days while the rest of the boys should also be fully fit soon.” Afridi, 30, said that his players were learning a lot from the training sessions. “There have been fitness problems but it’s natural because the camp has been tough so far. The boys are learning and I’m confident that our fielding will improve.” The experienced all-rounder said that the team management is planning to slow down the pace of the camp a bit to allow the players to rejuvenate before leaving for the West Indies. “We will switch to lighter training in the final phase of the camp so that the players are fresh when we leave home to play the Twenty20 World Cup.” Afridi will lead Pakistan to defend the title in the Twenty20 World Cup. Pakistan have been bracketed with title contenders Australia and minnows Bangladesh.

Umar Gul joins camp after recovering from shoulder injury Published: April 11, 2010 LAHORE – The Pakistan twenty20 team camp training was bolstered with the return of Umar Gul who strained his shoulder during the camp. On Saturday, he rejoined training and also participated in the target matches at Gaddafi Stadium. The Pakistan team is training under the supervision of former captain Waqar Younis to prepare for the ICC World Twenty20 Cup scheduled to be held in West Indies later this month. A number of cricketers including Gul sustained injuries when Waqar stressed the players with some field practice which is considered the weakest link in the team. Apart from Gul, Umar Akmal, Yasir Arafat, Fawad Alam and Shahid Afridi got minor injuries. But Waqar said that the injuries are not of serious nature that would keep the players out of the team. Arafat, Fawad and Afridi kept practicing during the camp while Umar Akmal will be joining the team training on Monday. The Pakistan team will leave for the Caribbean by April 21 to defend the World title under Shahid Afridi. Pakistan won the second edition of the T20 with win over Sri Lanka in the final played at the Lords, England last year and made the final of the inaugural event losing to India.

So why the desperation to play in IPL 3?
Players want to earn an income, they're like any other human being, want to make a decent earning to live a life of more comfort. To be honest, the fans only wanted their players in the IPL to get more live coverage of their players in action. The players want to participate to make a decent wage. Either way, havign watched a few of the IPL games, I'm glad the Pakistani players were not allowed to play, it's been quite a boring tournament and even with them in it, I'd have not had much interest. As for the injury list, the injuries to Umar Akmal and Umar Gul are a major concern, we need both of them to play and be at the height of their game to have a chance of defending our title.

Oh you from the Paki Land King2be? Did not know that. No wonder -- the umpiring issue ruffled some feathers of yours and immediately raised fingers at some random Indian umpires. Now I connect the dots :-)

Is this atrick by the pakistani team to let other teams think the Pakistan are an injury laden team and not take them seriously? :hmmm:
In T20 every team is taken as seriously as the next team. It is too short a game. Things can go haywire for any big team in a short span like we saw how Royal challengers crumbled against Indian discards and rookies despite having some big names. Anyone can surprise anybody on a given day.

Yet the stats indicate otherwise, there is a remarkable consistency in T20 cricket for Pakistan, it's not all about luck. I would definately say that it doesn't require or possess the same level of skill that ODIs do let alone Test cricket. However people write it off as lesser cricket all to easily. You tell me if Dhoni doesn't badly want to win the T20 WC or if Smith will go into the WC with anythign other than wanting to see his SA win.
