kumble_rocks Posted February 15, 2007 Posted February 15, 2007 This video taken in Pune is amazing. I think 8 out 10 times weasel family wins over snake family. Cobra was injured badly. Surprising that the mongoose did not go for the kill.
Predator_05 Posted February 15, 2007 Posted February 15, 2007 Re: Cobra versus Mongoose - Actual Fight not Staged I think 8 out 10 times weasel family wins over snake family. hmmm...until i see a mongoose kill a Black Mamba (the daddy of all venomous snakes) i won't be convinced. BTW, the cobras in these videos are small - i wonder how a full-sized KING cobra would do against a mongoose...more of an even contest, i'd imagine
CC1981 Posted February 15, 2007 Posted February 15, 2007 Re: Cobra versus Mongoose - Actual Fight not Staged Preds, i don't think the venom of a snake is a factor here- basically from what i've heard, a mongoose is too fast for a snake and its continuous 'backfoot-frontfoot' dance disorients the snake. Btw, i think the daddy of all venomous snakes ( and venomous creatures, period!) live in australia.

Btw, i think the daddy of all venomous snakes ( and venomous creatures, period!) live in australia. Of course venom is a factor ! You mean to tell me that if the snake manages to get one it's protruding fangs stuck into the mongoose, a stronger venom won't have an effect ? Sure it will. The mamba is damn venomous too and i am sure one bite from a mamba could have a more debilitating effect on the mongoose's nervous system than a bite from a small cobra would. You're right on the 2nd count tho' - it isn't the most venomous snake if you look at it in terms of toxic concentration. If we solely consider the strength or raw potency of the toxins then i'd say the sea-snake and the Aussie brown snake/king snake are the most dangerous (read potent). However, it's the black mamba's strength and speed which makes it a much more dangerous predator. It moves at a rapid pace of 20 kmph an hour (it could chase you down within seconds if you ran away from it !), is much longer in length and unlike other snakes; it's AGGRESSIVE. The common venomous snake will act in defence and will only lash out if the response is provoked, it usually backs down after getting a bite in. The mamba doesn't ! These snakes are unique in the way they can bite REPEATEDLY - made possible due to their immense reserves of venom. Steve Irwin (RIP) said that a black mamba is no different from a lion or a great white shark - it can f*ck you just as hard, and just as fast. When taking all these factors into account; it's hard not to think of it as the daddy of all venomous snakes. I reckon it could make mincemeat of a mongoose. Nobody screws around with this f*cker...
kumble_rocks Posted February 15, 2007 Author Posted February 15, 2007 Re: Cobra versus Mongoose - Actual Fight not Staged I actually happen to agree with CC . Venom is not really factor because the amount of venom required to kill a mongoose is very little(although their is a school of thought which believes that it is somewhat immune to neurtoxins just like Milk Snake). Mongoose are known to fight King Cobras. But more times than not , King Cobra will win because of superior strength. A mongoose cannot bite off a 20 kg king cobra. Also, Keep in mind ,no other snake in the the world can inject as much venom as King Cobra. Yet Mongoose is known to stand it's ground on many occasions. Speed is the key here and I agree that Black Mamba will have the edge because it's superior speed. But , I won't be suprised if something like a bob cat which is lightning quick takes on black mamba and defeats it. Check the video of a Bob cat crushing a rattler . Boy, it's quick , but I guess , Black Mamba is quicker .
CC1981 Posted February 15, 2007 Posted February 15, 2007 Re: Cobra versus Mongoose - Actual Fight not Staged Of course venom is a factor ! You mean to tell me that if the snake manages to get one it's protruding fangs stuck into the mongoose, a stronger venom won't have an effect ? Sure it will. Oh it will and i think even a small king cobra's venom is enough to seriously screw up a mongoose. However, the mongoose is usually too fast for the snake and as a result, 8 out of 10 times the snake doesn't get a chance to land a bite. So yeah, the few times the mamba bites the mongoose, the mongoose is toast. But the mongoose is going to kill it far more often without taking a single venomous bite. Mind you, snakes need to get one solid bite to inject venom - the mongoose is usually so fast that even the few times it gets bit, most of the time it's able to get the snake's fangs out of its body (by jerking away and pulsating its muscles) before the snake can inject the venom ( the teeth have to be in a certain length before the 'hinge' on their fangs work and discharge venom). And if you are not going by toxicity factor, i'd then go for the King Cobra for the most dangerous predator amongst the snakes. IIRC, the King Cobra has the largest reservoir of venom amongst all snakes and its venom, though not the most powerful, is very potent nonetheless. Its aggressive too and whats more, the king cobra is usually acknowledged as the smartest of all snakes. Not to mention, some king cobras can 'rear' to 6 foot in height ( geez..a king cobra looking down at me ! tht'd be very scary!) Smarts beat aggression in my book and the king cobra can be very aggressive as well.
King Posted February 15, 2007 Posted February 15, 2007 Re: Cobra versus Mongoose - Actual Fight not Staged I've seen a King Cobra during my visit to India last time. It was a full grown one and was huge. That one sent shivers down the spine of us campers.

I think(not sure) a king cobra is not the longest snake but it can rear up higher than any snake barring the anaconda. Some prehistoric fossils found indicated that king cobras could rear up to 8 feet high ! I can easily see how snake worship got into people in the areas where king cobra lives throughout asia - thousands of years ago, if i, with 1/10000th the knowledge i posess, ran into a snake looking down at me while its standing one and half times higher than me, i'd be worshipping it too !

Interestingly , it does not belong to the cobra (Naja) family. Also, it's the only snake known to make nest for it's egg and fiercely protect the eggs.

Yet Mongoose is known to stand it's ground on many occasions.[/quote'] It's true - the mongoose isn't quite immune to snake venom, but it's got different muscle receptors which can block the proliferation of venom through the blood cells. It's quite a formidable opponent for any snake - i am not going to deny that. It's pace of movement and sharp claws allow it to get more shots in at the snake than vice versa. Suprisingly, they don't eat snakes (AFAIK) but only kill them when confronted. I wouldn't be so sure. Rattlers are quite passive by nature; they don't even move and are very reclusive. The mamba would give a bob-cat a fair fight; and just one bite of it's venom would have it paralysed in no time. Mambas have been known to penetrate elephant skin with their fangs, so there is no lack of incisiveness as far as they are concerned. And if you are not going by toxicity factor, i'd then go for the King Cobra for the most dangerous predator amongst the snakes. Smarts beat aggression in my book and the king cobra can be very aggressive as well. Black Mambas can grow up to 10 ft in height, m8 ! That's what their height is on average. The longest is about 4.3 meters (approx 15 ft). Keep in mind that they keep about a third of their bodies up in the air...so if you do encounter a mamba - it WILL look you right in the eye. As far as te size factor is concerned, it's an even contest - the mamba is more intimidating (from a human perspective of course). Kings also grow up to 4 metres. Kings aren't pugnacious like Mambas though (this is widely acknowledged as a fact) which immediately marks them down in my estimation - although studies have indicated that they got lenghtier fangs and deposit MORE venom in a single bite. However this isn't a redeeming attribute, especially when you consider that King's venom is markedly less potent than regular cobra venom. Cobra bite victims generally die within an hour or two (depending on the severity of the bite) whereas Mamba victims invariably die within a half hour (provided that they dnot receive adequate medical attention).
CC1981 Posted February 15, 2007 Posted February 15, 2007 Re: Cobra versus Mongoose - Actual Fight not Staged but..King Cobra...its..smarter ! :hic: Cobra bite victims generally die within an hour or two (depending on the severity of the bite) whereas Mamba victims invariably die within a half hour (provided that they dnot receive adequate medical attention). I don't find that a factor at all, mate. Chances are if i get bit by one of those guys,i'd be out in the boonies well away from civilization. Sure,if they bit me in a zoo, thats different (and would be entirely my fault in 99.99999% case) but 30 in or 2 hr doesn't make much difference to me when you are in the middle of the bush. if its got enough venom to kill you, you are bolloxed.
Predator_05 Posted February 15, 2007 Posted February 15, 2007 Re: Cobra versus Mongoose - Actual Fight not Staged but..King Cobra...its..smarter ! :hic: No, it isn't. :wtg: Check out ths article on the daddy of all venomous snakes; a fittnig tribute indeed. http://www.findarticles.com/p/articles/mi_m1170/is_n6_v26/ai_18789695 We never did see the mamba, but it prompted me to start asking questions. I soon found that every bush person seems to have a story about the largest, quickest and most feared venomous snake of a continent loaded with reptiles of awesome powers. Throughout a range over most of sub- Saharan Africa, black mambas are the subjects of myths taken for truth and of true tales that are as strange as any myths. A bite to the face or torso or a direct hit into a vein or artery can bring death from paralysis within 20 minutes. An aroused mamba often strikes repeatedly in blurred succession, reputedly fast enough to tag a bird in flight. Bush wisdom grants mambas an aggressive nature and great speed over the ground. Colonial lore tells of mambas overtaking men on horseback or dropping through chimneys to wipe out whole families. In fact they are among the nimblest of snakes, quicker than a person in thick bush and at times undeniably pugnacious.
Predator_05 Posted February 15, 2007 Posted February 15, 2007 Re: Cobra versus Mongoose - Actual Fight not Staged I've been to snake farms in Thailand and handled de-fanged cobras. They aren't quite the meanies they are made out to be, but then again they were de-fanged... My fascination for snakes once perusaded me to pursue a career in herpetology, but i pulled out once i reached college. For some reason; the thought of being broke, starving and residing in a tiny apartment building with a bunch of freaky snakes for company wasn't a very attractive proposition. Not a sound way to get chicks either...bring one home and she dies from a cardiac arrest upon noticing the little grass snake perched on the coat hanger. You're looking at a law-suit right there... :hic:
kumble_rocks Posted February 16, 2007 Author Posted February 16, 2007 Re: Cobra versus Mongoose - Actual Fight not Staged Actually Steven Austins , world renowned herpetologist believes that King cobra is potentially most dangerous venomous snake in the world even more than black mamba , I assume because of the qty of the venom that it injects. In fact , check out this video ,absolutely awesome!.Their is no way , a mongoose can take out this beast which is 15 feet long . Also, I think a case can be made that king cobra is somewhat immune to neurotoxins because it eats other venomous snakes including cobras. http://youtube.com/watch?v=x7XY3dMVNhg
Predator_05 Posted February 16, 2007 Posted February 16, 2007 Re: Cobra versus Mongoose - Actual Fight not Staged Do you watch Austin Stevens, KR ? What is your opinion of him ? I personally don't seem to find him as interesting as Steve Irwin was...mainly due to his poor handling and mistreatment of creatures. Steve always exercised caution and would emphasise the beauty and uniqueness of any creature he came in contact with - Austin tends to provoke them into reacting fiercely and tries too many stupid stunts; showing them scant respect. He is quite good with snakes tho', and i gained a new found appreciation for the King Cobra when i saw him handling one in one of his Animal Planet episodes. Remember that episode when he got bit by a viper on camera ? I reckon if you put a black mamba head to head with a King Cobra, the latter would probably win due it's sheer size and carnivorous instincts. The mamba isnt known to attack other snakes, so i find it difficult to believe that it would survive a tussle with a fully grown King Cobra. However, when either snake is confronted with a different species of animal - i;d say the Mamba is far more dangerous due to the toxicity of it's venom, it's speed and aggression.

Actually I do follow Austin Stevens, but I would partly agree with you about the fact that his handling of animals can be rough. I actually like Jeff Corwin the most. I once distinctly remember Steve Irwin struggle to handle Egyptian Cobra in one particular national geographic episode which Jeff Corwin handled quite comfortably even though it is one of the more agressive snakes . Atually Austin was bitten by a Egyptian Cobra not by a Viper , I believe. Check this video of him being bitten by the cobra http://youtube.com/watch?v=PhJp0p_MDew Didn't Austin handle a black mamba also? I would tend to agree with you that Black Mamba would evoke more fear among other species and would do well against other species. Slow animals like Elephant would fear them But , I would tend to believe that the big cats are so fast that they wouldn't necessarily fear these snakes. Just my theory , can't substantiate it.
