If Hindi dominates in all the states then the regional language will disappear which happenned in Punjab ? Gurmukhi. On the other hand, if you learn English, our regional languages and culture will thrive. In any case English is the language of the world.

Re: Learning Hindi or English a must in Indian Schools? Education is a perennial political battlefield in India, with Congress-ruled states recently devoting considerable efforts to reversing attempts by the BJP to ?Hindu-ise? the traditionally secular system when it has been in power. In 2000/01, the BJP government issued a national curriculum framework under the slogan ?Indianise, nationalise and spiritualise?, calling for the purging of all foreign elements from state schools, including British and Mughal influences.

Garbbar, If you dont take things as a whole rather take it at the problem level then our perspective will be different. I understand your logic on generalizing it but it's not true in this case.

Re: Learning Hindi or English a must in Indian Schools? We don't have a national language. Would have liked Sanskrit to have been our national language, but it probably means everyone has to learn it. English is a must and local language is a must. I see the order as English (double must), local language (must) , hindi (preferable), sanskrit (if time permits).

Yeh kaddon hua ? lol The only reason Hindi became more popular in Punjab is because of the influx of people who came to the prosperous state from neighboring places, and due to the influx of Cable and Movies. It's similarity to Hindi is another reason for people to easily transition from one language to the other unlike in southern states where people find it much harder to understand any hindi. Nevertheless, Gurmukhi is still very prevalent in Punjab. The fact is, that a lot of the nothern states have languages which are similar to Hindi, in fact even Gujarati is quite similar, and I can pick up quite a few words when they talk. Kashmir, Punjab, Haryana, HP, UP, Uttaranchal, Bihar (the whole gangetic belt), MP, Chattisgarh, Jharkhand, Rajasthan, Gujarat, parts of AP and some more states all speak Hindi/Urdu or languages similar to Hindi which is the reason why Hindi is considered a national language.

You sure aren't the only one ! Go on, gives us all a laugh ! http://72.36.144.77/modules.php?name=Forums&file=viewtopic&t=3112
let me give you an idea: in school, our hindi teacher would announce class averages with me included and with me not included... and another one: so poor is my hindi that i often pretend to not speak hindi at all when confronted by old auntijis here who start the conversation in hindi or gujurati.

Wow ! How did it get that bad ? Didn't your parents speak to you in Hindi/Gujarati around the house ? That was the case with me... Hell, even i am no Hindi scholar but i still speak it fluently. Obviously i can't write it or read it as proficiently as a real native speaker can but if someone dropped me in the middle of an Indian city, i wouldn't exactly sh*t myself.

actually i am not gujurati... i am sindhi but i picked up gujurati from all the guju bhai and bhen here in houston. and yeah i was able to speak hindi interspersed with few words of english. i recall the 10th board... had to hire a tutor to somehow help me get a passing grade. managed a 49! thats my highest ever score in hindi since 3 grade where i once scored a 92... i believe that was due to an error on part of my teacher... she graded my exam twice.

Re: Learning Hindi or English a must in Indian Schools? thing is Hindi should be compulsory to learn in all schools in India. it is our national language, and isn't spoken all over India. its really frustrating that when u meet an Indian anywhere in overseas, then u have to ask him "Do u Speak Hindi" on the other hand, u would see that even pakistanis have this so called "Pushtu" language, which pathan ppl in pakistan speak, its totally different languag then urdu, but still these ppl speak so fluent urdu..

We don't have a national language.
Err , We have a National Language and it is Hindi.
Link?
No , but it is accepted as National Language.
By whom? You can't just accept it and expect it to be. It has to become the National language and it has not. I think we should make English the National language.
