More... Selection of Asia Cup team raises many questions Taus Rizvi & Deepak Narayanan / DNA Wednesday, June 9, 2010 Mumbai: When the team sheet for the Asia Cup was handed out on Monday evening, all the attention was, understandably, focussed on two big names missing from the batting line-up — Sachin Tendulkar, who needed rest, and Yuvraj Singh, who had been dropped from the one-day side for only the second time in a career spanning nearly a decade. Another decision taken by the Krishnamachari Srikkanth-led selection committee, however, has slipped under the radar - and that is the continued exclusion of a pace quartet that until not so long ago were trading places as spearheads. Consider this: The selection committee has picked three separate squads in the last one month: one for the tri-series in Zimbabwe, one ‘A’ side for a tour of England and this latest squad for the Asia Cup. For these trips, a total of 12 different fast and medium-fast bowlers have been picked — which, keeping next year’s World Cup in mind — would be India’s collective pool of quick options. Yet, none of these teams included the likes of Ishant Sharma, S Sreesanth, Munaf Patel or RP Singh, all four of who at various times since the last 50-over World Cup in the Caribbean have been touted as the next big thing in Indian fast bowling. Sreesanth was the talk of the town for a year after his exploits in South Africa in 2007, Munaf Patel at one point was drawing comparisons with Glenn McGrath for his impeccable line-and-length, RP Singh played a big role in a series of Indian victories abroad while rarely has an Indian fast bowler captured the world’s imagination as Ishant did right through his first season. Former India fast bowler Manoj Prabhakar feels the current situation reflects two problems — a lack of depth in the fast bowling ranks and poor management of available talent. “We had a very talented bowler in Ishant Sharma but where is he now? Sreesanth was doing so well but he seems to have fallen out of favour. We don’t have a proper coach or anybody to look at them specifically and as a result, our talented is just getting wasted,” he said. “We have two senior bowlers in Zaheer Khan and Ashish Nehra, but while Nehra isn’t exactly match fit, how much can we depend on Zaheer alone?” Prabhakar feels the Zimbabwe tour was ideal for bringing out-of-form bowlers back into the fold. “They should have picked them for the Zimbabwe tour. It was an opportunity they missed out on. It was not necessary to play them in all the matches but the coaches could have rectified their mistakes.” Former India selector Kiran More didn’t agree with the philosophy of distributing India caps, mainly because he felt there wasn’t enough time for these proven performers to make a comeback. “They were part of the team one-and-a-half months back, and now they are not among the next 60 also,” More was quoted as saying on a website. “They didn’t go to Zimbabwe, they didn’t go to the A tour of England. Suddenly your main players are missing from the next 60. How are they going to make a comeback? “The guys who have gone to England for the A tour, they are going to do well… and they are going to come back and be in the reckoning for a place in the Indian team. Not Ishant, RP, Irfan (Pathan) or Sreesanth.” Balwinder Singh Sandhu says it could work both ways. “If they want to have a pool of six to eight fast bowlers ahead of the World Cup then it is not a problem. However, if you take in the other sense, then I think the bowlers such as Sreesanth and Ishant will have to work on their flaws immediately to get back into the groove.” Venkatesh Prasad, who was the bowling coach when Indian fast bowling stocks seemed to have peaked, said that the only way to make a comeback was for the bowlers to analyse what was going wrong. “Confidence is a big factor for a fast bowler,” Prasad told DNA. “I’m not talking only about the confidence that comes from performances, but the confidence bowlers have in their own abilities. “They need to understand their own strengths and weaknesses, they need to understand what areas need improvement. In a high-pressure match situation, it is this confidence that lifts you above the pressures of the moment.”

mastana Posted June 9, 2010 Posted June 9, 2010 I just can't believe Showsanth wasn't picked... He is way better than any of the other selections...or even upcoming "pace sensations" Dinda and Umesh :haha: Ever wondered what the man in your avatar said about Sreesanth few months ago? 'Sreesanth needs to change his habits' - Donald Allan Donald, the former South African fast bowler, has said that if Sreesanth wants to play for India again he needs to change his habits. Donald, 42, who recently ended his term as coach at Warwickshire, the county where Sreesanth played earlier this English summer, was blunt in his appraisal of the fast bowler, saying it was high time he backed up his showmanship with bowling form. "Just in terms of his desire, and if he has got any ambitions of playing for India for a long, long time, he should his change his habits," Donald told Cricinfo. Donald arrived in India on Thursday and will shuttle between Delhi and Hyderabad as part of the commentary team for the Champions League Twenty20. He said he had recommended Sreesanth's name to the management at Warwickshire to make up for the absence of genuine fast bowlers like Brett Lee and Morne Morkel, who were busy on national duties earlier this summer. "He really bowled some good spells and got wickets in clusters of two here and there, and in terms of the outcome of the game it played a massive part," Donald said. Sreesanth started his campaign on a prosperous note, picking up a five-for in his first game. Thereafter, he continued with the good work, though he never hit full throttle, before returning to India with returns of 22 wickets in 10 games. Donald was well aware of Sreesanth's abilities with the ball and his excitable nature, having witnessed the Indian's spectacular performance in the Johannesburg Test in 2006, where he took five wickets and helped India to a dramatic victory. "We wanted someone who could overstep the line a little bit and we know how Sreesanth can do that. But I knew I could control him, and we chatted about it quite a lot." Donald said they had extensive talks about the training routine, and reckoned Sreesanth had plenty of areas to work on. "First of all, his training habits are not good and the way he goes on to the field need to change. Then, he doesn't put enough time on specifics." Donald also said Sreesanth needed to work on his attitude, and his tendency to lose the plot when things didn't go his way. "I know he is aggressive, he is passionate and I know he just boils over with emotions in the heat of the battle. There is nothing wrong with that but I just think sometimes he lets himself down." At the start of the Irani Cup last week, Sreesanth declared his intentions of working hard to keep himself calm. By the end of the game he had been fined 60% of the match fee for using abusive language against Mumbai's Dhawal Kulkarni. Donald said coaches and team-mates were bound to get frustrated with Sreesanth's temperament, and that he was likely to fall out of line with the team management as well. "It is frustrating in a way. I do have a problem with that because it is not the real him," Donald pointed out. "It is false in the way he conducts himself. You need to be in serious form to back your body language. Off the field he is a little kitten - he speaks the right thing, comes and says 'sorry for this and that'. But my message to him is he cannot come off the field and apologise. It is too late." Regarding Sreesanth's bowling technique, Donald has only one concern - that his front arm comes down too fast down. "He has got a slight technical glitch where he sits back and doesn't really use his front arm well, which makes him swing the ball a bit early." http://www.cricinfo.com/india/content/story/429032.html

RP, Sreesanth, Irfan & Munaf have faced torrid times, but who hasn't? Zak was dropped but he was given a chance to comeback. Not every game after comeback has been 100% success for him. Have we sent him off again? No. 2. Uthappa has been given the medical clearance to play by BCCI's doctors and physio's, says CNN IBN. 3. If Zak's performance in the County circuit earned him a comeback, why not Murali Karthik? He's a waaaaaaaaaay superior bowler than Ojha, who seems to get into the team only bcoz of Dhoni. 4. Ishant drop is okay. He was given way too many chances. And he needs to up his pace. 5. Can't wait for October to see the new selection panel come in. 6. There seems to be no method about selecting people. Anyone can get picked after a random 100 while consistent performers sit out. 7. This committee has ripped our batting and bowling apart. One failue after another stands witness to it.
saneindian Posted June 9, 2010 Posted June 9, 2010 Whoever is not in the team looks good as long as he hasn't played. Ek baar andar aaya to Irfan, RPS, Sreesanth ya Munaf sabko gaaliyaan milengi, Uthappa will be called reckless and that hasn't changed or learned...Kya kare we are just like that.
achilles Posted June 9, 2010 Posted June 9, 2010 Being Srikkanth's supporter is worse than being a Maoist sympathiser. People seem to dislike him more than they disliked Dilip Vengsarkar's panel. And that is saying something.

That guy wasted his chances against A-teams. Robin was atleast playing Int. teams. And he did a good job. All Vijay supporters wanted him out. No one wants to see an out-of-form player battling it out and being one of the causes for the team's poor performance

All Vijay supporters wanted him out. No one wants to see an out-of-form player battling it out and being one of the causes for the team's poor performance Dude why don't you turn up at NCA and see Robin Uthappa doing conditioning and strengthening exercises. He isn't fit after his surgery and will need at least 6-7 more weeks to get back to play cricket. As for Vijay, well like many beofre him, he too failed. What's the big deal. He got his chances, failed to use them and hence is out of the team.
thevortex Posted June 10, 2010 Posted June 10, 2010 Of the list mentioned, only Murali Karthik has been systematically ignored - despite performance in pressure situations. The others have not put in strong performances consistently - Uthappa being injured is an exception. I would certainly like for Sreesanth and Irfan to be in the scheme of things. But both of them have to take definite steps to get back on track and fit in the team.

These cricketers can't do so immediately since BCCI is neither sending them to England nor is the Ranji even on. What do they do? They lose their spot in the team, they aren't even sent on a friggin A Tour to get their confidence back. Ridiculous planning (or the lack of it) from the selectors, months before the World Cup. Dude why don't you turn up at NCA and see Robin Uthappa doing conditioning and strengthening exercises. He isn't fit after his surgery and will need at least 6-7 more weeks to get back to play cricket. As for Vijay, well like many beofre him, he too failed. What's the big deal. He got his chances, failed to use them and hence is out of the team. Dude, I tell you what I read on CNN-IBN when the team was being picked for Asia Cup. They said he has got the Medical Clearance and they're obviously not dumb enough to make some stuff up, given that they have the term "CNN" before their channel name.
achilles Posted June 10, 2010 Posted June 10, 2010 But both of them have to take definite steps to get back on track and fit in the team. Which is why I can't see the logic in not sending these proven performers even on friggin A-tours. These guys hardly have any cricket till the Ranji starts, which still is some time away.

Yeah agree there to a large extent..The point is what kind of agenda the selectors has in mind when they r a selcting a team Is it keeping in mind the WC and hence building a pool of players from there to select from? Is it only winning the next toruney and then builld the nucleus of the WC from it ? Is it investing in a new set of players and see if there is quality good enough to counter the proven performers but currently out of form? Im not sure of what the thinking tradition is with the board and the selectors..But to be fair to them, if they have to put a team on paper, they als have to consider the below 1)They have to be fit 2)Recent performance 3)Balance of the team 4)Opposition and location of the tour I believe that the selectors have done a fair job, as we do not have the access to information which they have and thats the benefit of doubt we need to give them! Lets wait n watch...as long as the process is fine, the rest will take care of itself
