Pay bribes to "fix" your national ID 5. Add more That can be done but it certainly depends on what type of technology is used in creating the IDs. And still, IDs are better than nothing available to identify yourselves for the use of security.

Hopeless ever pessimistic people. 10 years hence with a cost of 40 - 50 % more -- we are implementing the National IDs. The solutions -- to your problems are very very simple. In fact if one has to believe Nandan National IDs are going to resolve a lot of the issues you mentioned. I have said this before and will say this again -- National ID is not an option, it is a must !

Looks like mamu thinks it will help us identify/locate terrorists easily. The US has a SSN system forever, and the number of Illegals here are too many to count. So it isn't going to solve the issue of terrorism/illegals. Would mainly help with a more integrated banking system/tax payment/etc provided it's integrity isn't compromised.

There are many uses to a National ID ... You mentioned one. Another is census statistics can be measured far more accurately. It will much easier to decide who and where to allocate resources for administrators. Security and law/order will improve as the aam janta is going to have a number to get tracked by. Any system is susceptible to mis-use. However, having a system in place will be a million times better than having no system whereby noone has a clue about what is going on. Also comparing the US social security is not quite correct. This system went into place a long time before computers came into the picture. Also, social security was never meant to be an ID. It was never meant to be rigorously tracked. It was meant to be more like a reference number of sorts. There is little, if any background checks that can be conducted using a person's social security number. For example, if I were to open a utility account such as a tv cable connection, I can give any social security number to do so. The cable company does not look into it unless I default a payment or the likes of that. Many mistakes were made when the SS system was implemented. I am sure Nilekani will be smart enough to learn from the problems plaguing other national ID schemes and try to counter those.

Genius! : Off Topic i know. but still... i am talking about something else. i am talking about crooks misusing a sytem for personal gains. let the national ID cards be implemented. let the uses/advantages of the card be seen. Let us all know who gets benifited from these national ID cards. And then I will tell you how crooks use this very same system, make money, cheat people and never get caught. i have seen so much corruption in our country in so many unlikely places that i have become a pessimist.. I just cant help it. sorry. Lets hope the people behind our National ID system develop some kind of fool proof - non tamperable sytem and a realiable network with good service.
