Benn, Steyn and spitting

Recommended Posts

I like Benn, you should be able to rile up a player as much as you want, but not cross the line in regards to racism, personal insults etc.. for those saying its a gentlemen's game, well thats long gone. Theres only few players who take pride in that phrase, like Kallis , Dravid, Sachin, Hussey etc. Benn just played mind games by watching the video and it seems Steyn was the first to snap. What should benn be charged on anyway? To me Steyn is the clear culprit atm unless the comments Benn made crossed the line.

Well said. I saw the video and I think both Benn and Steyn should be punished. Benn really needs to be controlled. He just cant resist getting into trouble.
Thank You. As for Benn, he has lost quite a lot of sympathy he gained from the incident in Australia after this instance. Or is it that the Saffers were too brittle in taking his words with a pinch of salt? C'mon Saffers, don't you guys have a go at the opposition? Didn't you guys not even have a go at people who can't even speak English?

Exactly. And to make a simple point- On debut, Sachin was called a baby by the entire country of Pakistan. Even their players were harsh on him. Did he swear back? Did he give them a lecture on morality? Did he even bother replying? No. Instigators will always be there. And you should never let them win.

I am generally in support of arguments / sledging or whatever you call it as long as it is 'within the line', whatever that line is. Adds a lot more excitement into the game. Oh and calling Sachin a baby or a school-boy or whatever is hardly an insult or a wind-up. If they get offended by people calling them the traditional BC/MC, basterd, fawker insults, they deserve to. Players should learn specific personalized things to say to others. More fun for them, us (if its close to the stumps), etc.

Looks like theres no love lost between the the WIndians and the Safricans. Now Kallis and Roach having a go at each other, Shiv intervening. Btw are WI heading for a a whitewash? Could be the reason for all the frustration. Makes people do odd things, like try and eat balls for instance.

No match ban? Sreesanth or Shoaib or Malinga would've been docked a few matches. Benn was too, for just talking! 100% match fee fine is okay. But thats hardly going to "set a precedent to discipline players"- the eternal reason given when handing us match bans.

He definitely got away light. It was a level 2 offence and the toughest punishment I think is a one test ban or 100% match fees. The fact that he pleaded guilty might have saved him from the ban.
Same old story, bro. Only difference is that we get match ban thanks to us pleading guilty while they get away. Match Refereeing could snowball into a major crisis for cricket, the day Asia rises up against it.

South Africa want action taken against West Indian Benn More... South Africa want action taken against West Indian Benn Sat Jul 3, 2010 By Ken Borland JOHANNESBURG (Reuters) - South Africa have asked the International Cricket Council (ICC) to take action against West Indian Sulieman Benn for incidents in this week's third and final test in Bridgetown, Barbados. Tail-ender Dale Steyn was fined his entire match fee by the ICC for spitting in the direction of spin bowler Benn when the South African was dismissed on day three on Monday. However, South Africa manager Mohammed Moosajee said on Friday his team had also laid a code of conduct charge against the West Indian. "Dale Steyn's action was regrettable and he has apologised for it," Moosajee told a news conference as his squad arrived back in Johannesburg. "But it came after lots of provocation and there was also retaliation after the incident. "We have laid a code of conduct charge against Sulieman Benn with the ICC and that must now go through the judicial process." West Indies fast bowler Kemar Roach was also fined 50 percent of his match fee for an "unpleasant altercation" on day four. South Africa won the third test by seven wickets to complete a 2-0 series win after sweeping West Indies 5-0 in the one-dayers and 2-0 in the Twenty20 internationals.

So, Kemar gets a 50% fine for having a verbal duel while Dale simply gets a 100% match fee fine despite spitting at someone. And SA's complaining? I don't get it. Perhaps, SA should look at the times when they got away with their stuff instead of making a mess of issues.

Benn suspended for antics in third Test Sulieman Benn, the West Indies left-arm spinner, has been suspended for breaching the ICC Code of Conduct during the third Test against South Africa in Barbados last month. South Africa had asked the ICC to take disciplinary action against him last week following his altercation with fast bowler Dale Steyn on the third day of the Test. Benn pleaded guilty to a Level 2 breach of the code and was penalised by match referee Jeff Crowe. His previous disciplinary troubles means he now faces a ban of one Test or two ODIs or two Twenty20s, whichever comes first. The incident took place during lunch on the third day at the Kensington Oval when Benn barged into the South African dressing room and taunted some of the players and management. This followed the dismissal of Steyn a few overs before lunch when the fast bowler appeared to spit in the direction of Benn as he walked towards the pavilion. That cost Steyn his entire match fee, though the match referee agreed that Benn had provoked Steyn in the overs leading up to his dismissal. "Whatever had gone on before Sulieman entered the Proteas' dressing room, while helping to explain his behaviour, cannot justify it," Crowe said. "Clearly, Sulieman has acted inappropriately here and in a way that is contrary to the spirit of cricket." Benn has had behavioural issues over the past year, including a dust-up with Mitchell Johnson and Brad Haddin during the Perth Test in December, which earned him a two-ODI ban. He was fined his full match fee by the West Indies management last month after he was ordered off the field by captain Chris Gayle for failing to follow his instructions during the fourth ODI against South Africa. His spat with Steyn was not the only ugly incident in an ill-tempered final Test in Barbados. Fast bowler Kemar Roach lost half his match fee after a run-in with Jacques Kallis during the closing stages of the match. He repeatedly walked up to and exchanged words with the batsman after testing him with a series of bouncers. The stand-off threatened to escalate and required the intervention of the umpires and West Indies fielders to come under control.
This is very unfair:hitler::protest:

This would look unfair if you consider only that incident in isolation. Both were level2 offences, both pleaded guilty. Benn was always going to face the stiffer punishment because of his already bad track record.
