Re: This Pathan character Nah. They will not play crapthan as 6th batter. Its only a 100 in warm up game. I am not getting to carried away by it nor will selectors. Pathan will only play as 4th bowler for now. Unless he proves in real thing over a 6-12 month period that he can score tons in test cricket as well. If he plays he will bat 8.

(2 of veeru, gambhir, jaffer) SRT, RD - cant drop laxman - vice captain so cant drop gangs.. just scored so cant drop him either dhoni.. he cant get place into playing 4 bolwers.. unless we decide to go with one opener and pathan as another..

He is primarily a bowler and his bowling sucks. He is not good enough to be in team as bowler alone or good enough to be in team as batsman alone. He seems to be in team simply to strenghthen batting line up at 8. Same logic on why england picked giles ahead of monty. That giles better bat :huh: You guys have same thinking as Fletcher and Co. Me I will always go for 4 best bowlers which Crapthan is not one of. I also will always go for 6 best batters which again Irfan is not part of. Thus he should not be in test team.

Re: This Pathan character Dsr, my problem with your argument is that you are assuming that Pathan will always remain a number 8 batsman. Your assumption is that India's next great batsman will come out from the ranks of the top six. This is a flawed argument. IMO, Pathan has already shown enough in his short career to suggest that he can become India's next great batsman. An average of 35 in the last 10 Tests against major teams, a very straight bat, a calm head, and as he is amply demonstrating here, the ability to play real pace. You can't ignore an unbeaten century made on a track where teams are getting skittled out for 100 plus. I'd completely ignore his bowling in selection matters. That's a bonus. He deserves his place in this team on his batting alone, ahead of the likes of Laxman, Tendulkar and Ganguly.

Re: This Pathan character When he has shown and proven at test level that he is capable of scoring runs consisitently as well a tons at test level. Then he can be considered maybe as a number 6. It is probably at least a year or 2 away of proving this. You are basing it all on 1 tour game. How ridiculous. On that basis Bhaji should bat in the top 6 and should be selected as batsman alone ahead of Laxman and Tendulkar. Word of warning for the hype machine on Pathans batting. AGARKAR! I do believe he has potential with the bat but a number 6 batsman at this stage is frankly crazy for a guy who has only just scored his 1st first class ton ever.

Re: This Pathan character Not really saying much that he averages more then these over last 10. As they have not been in form. Hardly advertising the fact to be outright batter in top 6. At least when the others are in form they will and do and have scored consistently at test level for sustained periods and will score BIG tons. Please stop comparing Pathan the batsman to Sachin. Its quite frankly a liitle bit crazy.

However, given the avalanche of criticism that has come his way in recent times, it's sometimes easy to forget that Pathan made his debut only three years ago. Now, despite batting better than most of his illustrious colleagues in the warm-up game at Potchefstroom, Pathan faces an uncertain future. For his own good, Pathan needs to forget about being a Brett Lee or a Dale Steyn. He's always been a medium-pace bowler capable of getting the odd ball to rocket through. In the search for raw pace, the building blocks of his bowling have been dismantled, and a previously consistent performer had become erratic and wayward. These days, three or four deliveries are followed by a long hop or a full toss that batsmen contemptuously swat away. Faced with strokplayers like AB de Villiers and Justin Kemp, it's been a recipe for unmitigated disaster. Hopefully, Akram, the greatest left-arm pace bowler of any era, will get him back on track. In his youth, Akram was certainly quicker than Pathan, but as he matured, the fast one became just one more option in his repertoire as he outfoxed batsmen with the sheer variety of the deliveries that he mastered.
