Nova Posted August 3, 2010 Posted August 3, 2010 NEW DELHI: Former India batsman Sanjay Manjrekar on Tuesday said Test cricket is an "outdated concept" and it is time to take Twenty20 cricket more seriously. "Test cricket is an outdated concept. We should be realistic and stop downplaying T20 format," Manjrekar said. The former India batsman described Twenty20 cricket as an excellent platform for the young players and felt it should be taken "more seriously". "It is viewers to decide. If you are liking the T20 matches more than the India-Sri Lanka Tests, then there should be more IPL matches. Because we are just responding to the market," Manjrekar, who played 37 Tests between 1987 and 1997 for India, said. "IPL was successful because the quality was there, you had players like Sachin and Warne. So it is not necessarily only about hitting the ball," he added. However, the 45-year-old cricketer said that packaging also played an important role in its success, mentioning the involvement of Bollywood star like Shah Rukh Khan and Preity Zinta. "The similar attempt has been made in Champions League T20 with Amitabh Bachchan as the brand ambassador," he said. Manjrekar felt the success of forthcoming T20 Champions League (CLT20) entirely depends on how the IPL teams perform as it is the Indian audience that will decide the success of the tournament. "The problem is that Indian people don't love world cricket, they love Indian cricket. So the Indian IPL teams have to do well," he said. http://timesofindia.indiatimes.com/sports/cricket/top-stories/Test-cricket-is-outdated-concept-Manjrekar/articleshow/6253160.cms ------------------------------ :wall: This guy is a sell out and yes death to IPL.
Clayton Bigsby Posted August 3, 2010 Posted August 3, 2010 WHAT A TOTAL LOSER! Another cancer like Shastri, Gavasker and Lal. Yet the media gives them a platform to share their outdated, unthoughtful views
SachDan Posted August 3, 2010 Posted August 3, 2010 Tendulkar becomes the most capped player in test cricket.. Manjrekar says test cricket an outdated concept. hmmm..
Clayton Bigsby Posted August 3, 2010 Posted August 3, 2010 He struggled to find his rhythm and form on bouncy pitches in Australia and South Africa. Manjrekar made an unsuccessful attempt at reinventing himself as an opener in 1997, and faded out of the international scene. He kept wicket occasionally, and often regaled team-mates with his singing.
mastana Posted August 3, 2010 Posted August 3, 2010 Naah. Manjrekar is outdated. :hehe: Can we have an interview with Amay Khurasia please?
yoda Posted August 3, 2010 Posted August 3, 2010 There is no question that test cricket is an outdated concept. Any game where a single match takes 5 days and can still end with no result must be an outdated concept. It is fine (if you have nothing else to do for 5 days that is) on bouncy/spinning wickets, on patta wickets it is a POS.
Clayton Bigsby Posted August 3, 2010 Posted August 3, 2010 Amay: A flamboyant left-hander from Madhya Pradesh, Amay Khurasiya has always been fancied as a batsman who could score briskly.
VRV Singh Posted August 3, 2010 Posted August 3, 2010 ridiculous...there is already a T20 overkill, now he wants more of it?
cowboysfan Posted August 3, 2010 Posted August 3, 2010 can somebody revoke his indian citizenship please, this guy is a classic media hater.
The Realist Posted August 3, 2010 Posted August 3, 2010 The day one takes anything seriously that Manjrekar says will be a sad one indeed. He either says the patently obvious or just talks drivel.
kabira Posted August 3, 2010 Posted August 3, 2010 oh well, he can't take pot shots at Sachin, so he found another topic
achilles Posted August 4, 2010 Posted August 4, 2010 I think the Border-Gavaskar trophy is the greatest and the most competitive Test series in the past decade (with maybe the exception of the Ashes '05). But yes, I agree with SM if his comments come on the back of India's showing and the fan's dwindling interest after the 2nd "RACETRACK" test.
DomainK Posted August 4, 2010 Posted August 4, 2010 Tendulkar becomes the most capped player in test cricket.. Manjrekar says test cricket an outdated concept. hmmm.. Cant be just a coincidence. When this guy grows a little older, he will be worse than Bedi.
