Who is the most successful captain

Hi guys, I was just wondering .. who do u think is the the most successful captain of Indian cricket so far... would u wanna differentiate between test cricket and one dayers when deciding so ? Would be good to know your opinioin. Cheers Sam

Wadekar won 3 out of 4 series - 2 of the wins being the first time India beat England and WI away from home. Ganguly was captain for most tests and has most wins. Gavaskar probably has the least losses but was a very defensive captain. The Nawab of Pataudi was captain for the longest period (1962-71 and another spell in 1974) and, with one good eye, led heroically from the front. Lala Amarnath earned the admiration of Don Bradman for his exploits in Australia. The immortal CK Nayudu captained India in its first test match at Lords in 1932 when the captain of the tour party, the Maharaja of Porbandar, voluntarily stood down in deference to CK's superior ability - CK was named one of Wisden's Five Cricketers of the Year after that tour. All good men and true.......... Incidentally, the WORST captain has to be the Maharajkumar of Vizianagram - appointed captain of the 1936 tour to England purely on grounds of being royalty and despicable persecutor of the mighty Lala Amarnath. And finally...........a mention for Gundappa Viswanath who, in the only test he captained (Golden Jubillee test against England 1980), recalled Bob Taylor after he had been given out caught by Vishy - Taylor went on to score a century and India lost - but the game of cricket won and Viswanath reminded everyone how much of a better captain he would have made than his surly and Kapil Dev - hating brother in law Gavaskar!

The number of wins and losses sometimes don't tell the real story of captaincy as one captain could have had a better team than the other. Haven't see some of the old timers captain but if the legend is true, it has to be Pataudi.
