Yusuf and Munaf bundle out UP cheaply More... Yusuf and Munaf bundle out UP cheaply Nov 17, 2010, VADODARA: Yusuf Pathan and Munaf Patel shared nine wickets between them as Baroda bundled out Uttar Pradesh for 190 and then reached 59 for one in their Ranji Trophy Super League match on Wednesday. Pathan (5/41) and Patel (4/49) produced devastating bowling form to wreck havoc in their rival camp and helped Baroda to make a strong start on the first day here. At the close of the opening day's play, Murtuja Vahora (6) was giving company to Jaykishan Kolsawala (34) at the Motibag Ground here. After winning the toss, Baroda skipper Pinal Shah elected to field and his bowlers responded by claiming four UP wickets - Tanmay Srivastava, D P Rawat, E R Dwivedi and captain Mohammed Kaif - at a total of 46 runs in 17.4 overs. Three of these four wickets were captured by Patel. Parvinder singh and Bhuvneshwar Kumar Singh then forged a 94-run 5th wicket partnership to take UP to 140 runs for the loss of five wickets. Parvinder singh's knock of 85 runs included eight fours and two sixes while Bhuvneshwar's knock of 47 runs was studded with five fours. After the lunch, Munaf Patel struck again and took the important wicket of Bhuvneshwar as UP innings suffered another collapse losing the remaining five wickets for just 50 runs, thanks to Yusuf Pathan, whose off-spin bowling played havoc. In reply, Baroda started steadly as both their openers Connor Williams and Jaikishan Kolsawala scored 43 runs for the first wicket before the former was brilliantly run out by Piyush Chawla. Brief Score: Uttar Pradesh First Innings: 190 runs all out in 70 overs (Parvinder Singh 85 runs, Bhuvneshwar Kumar Singh 47 runs; Yusuf Pathan 5/41, Munaf Patel 4/49) Baroda First Innings: 59 runs for one in 18 overs (Jaikishan Kolsawala 34 not out runs, Connor Williams 17).

Himachal off to a strong start; reach 256/4 against Punjab Dogra and Indulkar build on the good start provided by their openers to help the side reach 256 for four at stumps on day one of the contest as Punjab had a tough day at HPCA Stadium. More... Himachal off to a strong start; reach 256/4 against Punjab Thursday, November 18, 2010 Dharamsala: Skipper Paras Dogra (65) and Vinit Indulkar (60) hit half-centuries as hosts Himachal Pradesh made a strong start to their Ranji Trophy Super League group B match against Punjab on Wednesday. Dogra and Indulkar build on the good start provided by their openers to help the side reach 256 for four at stumps on day one of the contest as Punjab had a tough day at HPCA Stadium. The duo shared a 118-run stand after Bhavin Thakkar (38) and Sangram Singh (31) put on 77 for the first wicket. Jaskaran broke the opening partnership by trapping Singh and soon Thakkar's run out left Dogra and Indulkar to steady the boat. The duo did a wonderful job as they hit useful fifties at a good pace. India discard Yuvraj Singh separated them by scalping Dogra and Manpreet Gony later removed Indulker for another LBW decision. Dogra's 65 came off 96 balls with 11 fours while Indulkar took 122 balls for his 60, which had 10 hits to the fence. Stumper Manvinder Bisla carried on the good work as he was unbeaten on 34 at stumps and giving him company was Mukesh Sharma (17). Brief Scores: Himachal Pradesh: 256 for 4 in 90 overs. (P Dogra 65, V Indulkar 60; Yuvraj singh 1/43). PTI

Young Mumbai guns halt railmen in their tracks Rohan Raje made a stunning debut as he grabbed three top order wickets in an incisive new ball spell as Mumbai skittled out Railways for 201 on the opening day of Ranji round 3 match. More... Young guns halt railmen in their tracks At the start of the season, Rohan Raje wasn’t even part of the Mumbai Ranji probables list. But yesterday, on a slightly damp wickets at the MCA’s Bandra-Kurla Complex ground, he did the star turn for an injury-plagued home side. A sombre mood had set in on Mumbai team on Tuesday when three of its main bowlers Ajit Agarkar, Avishkar Salvi and Abhishek Nayar were injured and ruled out of the Ranji Trophy tie against Railways that began here at the BKC ground on Wednesday. Even skipper Wasim Jaffer had expressed his disappointment at missing out on services of three main players. However on Wednesday, Jaffer gambled by playing debutant seamer Rohan Raje and went in with three spinners. And it paid off. Raje bowled a brilliant morning spell to scalp three wickets bringing Railways down to 16 for three, while the next two sessions including a four wicket-haul from left-arm spinner Iqbal Abdulla saw them dismiss the visitors for a paltry 201. The hosts had lost opener Omkar Gurav (18) to skipper Murali Kartik till the stumps were drawn. Mumbai, however, were sitting pretty at 42 for 1. Unseasonal rains on the first two days of the week and a wet outfield had delayed the start of the match by an hour. The conditions were suitable to bowl first and Jaffer elected to field after winning the toss. Capitalising on the seamer friendly conditions, the 24-year-old Raje bowled his heart out with great control and swingforcing the batsman to commit mistakes. Early on, Dhaval Kulkarni struggled to get the line right but Raje was perfect. cr201.jpgIqbal Abdulla (left) had figures of four for 42Raju shinde He pitched the ball up, got it to move and got Mumbai the vital breakthroughs. By the time the first hour was through, Railways had lost three wickets and put just 21 runs on board after 14 overs. Raje’s first spell was an amazing 8-5-12-3 and it set up the hosts for the match. Iqbal Abdullah continued his good show this season with a four-wicket haul that helped hosts Mumbai restrict Railways to a mere 201. In reply, Mumbai reached 42 before losing opener Omkar Gurav, trapped by Railways skipper Murali Karthik for 18 on the last ball of the day. Sahil Kukreja was unbeaten on 21. For Raje, who made his IPL debut with the Mumbai Indians in 2008, the wait to make his Ranji debut was a long one and in between he even picked up a back injury that put him out of action for a while. But yesterday, none of it mattered. “I was happy to get a chance and even happier to be able to take wickets when the team needed them,†said Raje. “Having played in the IPL, I don’t think I was very nervous. I just wanted to run in and bowl well.†And that’s exactly what he did. But after the initial flurry of wickets, things seemed to settle down a little but then the Mumbai spinners got into the act. Consistent performances are sure to get one noticed on the Ranji season and Abdullah managed to get to turn and bounce off a lenght. It usually means trouble and the Railways batsmen were unable to cope. Too many let-offs Mumbai didn’t help their cause with as many as five dropped catches during the day and would have perhaps been able to wrap up the innings even earlier. In any case, they did a good enough job.And in a certain sense, they owe it to Wasim Jaffer’s luck too. He won the toss and elected to bowl. The bowlers took advantage of the available moisture and with the sun shining down all day, it should be perfect for batting today. That sets the scene up perfectly for the likes of Jaffer, Ajinkya Rahane and Rohit Sharma to make merry. Of course, Railways skipper Murali Kartik might have a thing or two to say about that. Opener M Suresh was his first wicket, edging it to Rohit Sharma at slip in the fourth over. The experienced Sanjay Bangar too struggled against the new ball and nicked it to the ‘keeper Gurav while TP Singh mistimed a shot that brought Railways down to 16/3. V Cheluvaraj and Yere Goud tried to steady the ship with a 49-run stand but Dhaval Kulkarni’s fiery second spell ended the partnership with the former succumbing to Kulkarni’s pace. The Mumbai bowlers were all over the Railway batsman. Even the spinners Ramesh Powar and Iqbal Abdulla came to the party bowling some tight spells. The left-arm spinner gave the ball enough loop and extracted enough bounce and turn from the wicket on a first day wicket. His attacking field and a consistent line rewarded him with four wickets including the wicket of Prahsant Awasthi, who scored a patient 113-ball 61.

Shukla, Saha fight back to prop up Bengal against spirited Assam More... Shukla, Saha fight back A STAFF REPORTER KOLKATA: Assam reduced Bengal to 126 for five an hour after lunch, but a fine rescue act by Wriddhiman Saha and Laxmi Ratan Shukla extricated the host to a position of comfort at close on the first day of the four-day Ranji Trophy elite group ‘A' league match at the Eden Gardens here on Wednesday. At stumps, Bengal was 257 for five with Saha batting on a workmanlike 60 and Shukla batting on an entertaining 75. Put in on a pitch that produced good lift and seam movement, Bengal was reduced to 58 for three and went into lunch at 72 for three. On resuming, Bengal lost its free stroking skipper Manoj Tiwary for 50 at 114 and left-handed Writam Porel for 12 at 126 to plunge into deep trouble. The two unbeaten batsmen joined forces to not only deny further success to Assam, but added 131 runs for the unfinished sixth wicket. Laxmi Ratan Shukla (75) along with Wriddhiman Saha (60) forged an unbeaten 131-run partnership to rescue Bengal after an initial collapse on the first day of their Ranji match here Wednesday. Sent in to bat, Bengal played like amateurs to finish at 257 for 5 at stumps. In a repeat show of their poor batting performance, Bengal openers failed to utilise the time on the crease and looked to choke against some pinpoint bowling assisted by good fielding. Arindam Das (30) got the start, but failed to build on it unfortunately. Early wickets After skipper Manoj Tiwary departed, the hosts looked in trouble, but Laxmi Ratan Shukla turned the tide with a brilliant knock in Bengal’s favour. The all-rounder cracked 13 boundaries en route to his 75 (batting) in company of Wriddhiman Saha who hit six fours to score an unbeaten 60. Losing the toss could have proven costly for Tiwary, though, this time, the visitors chose to bowl that set a total for Bengal. It was expected that the Bengal batters would make amends from their last outing and would set about piling the runs proficiently. But Assam had their plan chalked out. The visitors had expressed their satisfaction with the tinge of grass on the Eden Gardens wicket and bowled to a plan on Wednesday. Assam’s pace battery, comprising Abu Nachim Ahmed, Ranjeet Mali and Dhiraj Goswami, bowled brilliantly to engineer a Bengal collapse. Mali was the first to strike when he removed opener Sreevats Goswami (12). The southpaw was caught at mid-on by Dhiraj Goswami. After surviving a dropped catch, Abhishek Jhunjhunwala (1), who was drafted in at the last minute in place of Rohan Banerjee, was caught behind off a Dhiraj Goswami delivery. Banerjee, it was later learnt, had torn the ligament of his right ankle on Wednesday morning, and had been advised to rest for at least 20 days. No doubt, Jhunjhunwala blew a wonderful opportunity to make a comeback by scoring a single from 40 balls. Arindam Das, who started Ranji this season with a smashing 156 against Delhi, failed to live up to the expectations. He was caught behind while trying to negotiate an Ahmed delivery. Tiwary with Writam Porel added 56 runs for the fourth wicket to somewhat stabilise the team’s position. But the Bengal captain’s stay was short-lived and he succumbed to Mali in the 44th over. But that was not before scoring a half-century. Porel, who scored 71 against Mumbai in the last match, gave in to spinner Arlen Konwar’s tricks and was bowled for just 12 runs. Wicketkeeper Saha stepped up the home team’s efforts thereafter. Saha and Shukla displayed some superb on-field chemistry as they pounded Assam bowling to get an upperhand in the day’s proceedings. The right-handed batsman, who became Bengal’s panacea playing his 100th first class match, secured the admiration of both sides. “His (Laxmi Ratan Shukla’s) consistency, commitment and his sense of responsibility is very evident the way he played today,” Assam skipper Amol Muzumdar said after the day’s play. Muzumdar had nullified the importance of the toss on the eve of the match and Wednesday’s performance showed that the visitor’s had their homework done against Bengal. Their plans seemed to work well till Shukla dug in to prop the Bengal innings. Apart from Konwar, the spinners failed to get any turn from the Eden wicket. “There isn’t any help for spinners on this track,” Muzumdar said. Muzumdar appeared disappointed as the umpires called the day off two overs ahead of the targeted 90 overs. “We do not have a say in it. As per the new rules, umpires can call stumps at their discretion, without consulting the teams.” However, he still believes nothing is lost. “The match is evenly poised,” the Assam captain said. “I don’t think the wicket will deteriorate. It was overall a good day.” Meanwhile, Shami Ahmed has replaced Ashok Dinda for Bengal, as the latter is still down with fever. Bengal have also added all-rounder Sayan Shekhar Mondal as standby.

Delhi seamers wreck Gujarat More... Delhi seamers wreck Gujarat Special Correspondent 2010111858001701.jpg HAPPY BUNCH:Delhi's Pawan Suyal celebrates with his teammates after his four-wicket haul. NEW DELHI: The seaming track at the Ferozeshah Kotla was a pleasant change from the placid pitches that have come in for scathing criticism in the past. It must have shocked Gujarat which elected to bat but lasted a mere 23.4 overs on the opening day of its Ranji Tropy superleague match against Delhi here on Wednesday. The home team was 39 for no loss when bad light stopped play and rain prevented any further action. The lunch break was spent brooding by the Gujarat camp. The team's consultant, Aunshuman Gaekwad, former India opener and coach, missed the Gujarat innings by the time he flew in from Mumbai on Wednesday morning. Sadly, not one Gujarat batsman applied himself to the job the way Gaekwad was known to in his heyday! Batsmen after batsmen succumbed to indiscretion on a misty morning. There was nip in the air and the gentle breeze caused enough movement as Pawan Suyal, Pradeep Sangwan and Sumit Narwal played havoc with the Gujarat batting. “It was a very good pitch, with lot of pace and carry. The weather contributed to the swing too,” said curator Venkat Sundaram. Barring Niraj Patel, none had the answer to counter Delhi's inspired seam attack. The batsmen made the mistake of trying to reach for the ball and in the process fell into the trap. Gujarat had made a complete mess of its innings and Delhi enjoyed the advantage by making a confident start. The Delhi dressing room had a surprise visitor in Virender Sehwag, who shared some precious moments with the team. Despite the overcast conditions, captain Parthiv Patel opted to bat. He obviously did not foresee the disaster awaiting the side in the first hour of play. Opener Jay Desai had faced just seven deliveries when 21-year-old Pawan Suyal trapped him in front of the wicket. Priyank Panchal, The other opener, followed in the next over trying to poke at a delivery outside off stump only to edge it to wicketkeeper Punit Bisht off Sumit Narwal. Bisht went onto take four more catches as the trio of Suyal, Narwal and Pradeep Sangwan made the most of the conditions. Though Niraj Patel showed some resistance during his knock of 21, which contained five boundaries, the rest of the batsmen caved in meekly. Once Sangwan picked up Parthiv's wicket and returned in the next over to knock down Niraj's stumps, Gujarat were tottering at 35 for four. The middle order, however, buckled with Suyal picking up three in quick succession and Narwal returned to polish off the tail to finish off with three wickets. Despite the accolades, Sangwan who also finished with three wickets, felt it was too early to celebrate. "We did not expect such success with the ball early on, and it feels good. Sangwan Kapil Yadav and Pradeep Sangwan Delhi's medium pacers traveled together to the Feroze Shah Kotla from Najafgarh. The two are good friends and neighbours. On the morning of the game against Gujarat it was a toss up between these two for a place in the playing XI. Sangwan played. He picked up three wickets as Delhi bowled out Gujarat for just 71 on an overcast morning. Pawan Suyal scalped four, while Sumit Narwal picked up three in a beautiful spell of medium-pace bowling by the hosts. For Sangwan, being among the wickets was crucial. By picking up three he managed to stay in the reckoning in a Delhi pace bowling line-up which is highly competitive in the fight for places in the final XI. Three seasons ago there wasn't a great deal to chose between Ishant Sharma and Sangwan. But while Sharma has made a name for himself at the international level, Sangwan's game stagnated. He was dropped for the first time from the Delhi Ranji Trophy squad for the last round game against Chennai. It hurt the left-arm paceman. After being picked for the game against Gujarat, Sangwan didn't disappoint. He bowled an impeccable line and length and moved the ball much to the discomfort of the batsmen; an ability that he lost mastery over in the past year or so. Delhi, in reply, were 39 without loss in nine overs, with Shikhar Dhawan on 24 and debutant Unmukt Chand on 15, when bad light and incessant rain stopped play. Sangwan removed skipper Parthiv Patel; caught behind while Niraj Patel, who top-scored with 21, played on to the stumps off Sangwan. Bhavik Thakker was leg-before-wicket to Sangwan. The left-arm pacer finished with three wickets and gave away 16 runs in his seven-over spell. Skipper Mithun Manhas used his three seamers in short bursts. After a change of ends, Suyal and Narwal polished off the tail in their second spells. The ball was nipping when we began and perhaps the Gujarat batsman failed to adapt. I hope our batsman do better," Sangwan said. Though the conditions did favour the seamers, Delhi openers Shikhar Dhawan and debutant Unmukt Chand showed good temperament to stitch together 39. Dhawan hit five boundaries for his 24 while Unmukt looked on form with three hits on a day when International Cricket Council's pitch consultant, Andy Atkinson, made an appearance at the ground. Atkinson at Kotla International Cricket Council's pitch consultant Andy Atkinson, it is learnt found the wicket to his liking on Day One of the match between Delhi and Gujarat. Atkinson will be in Delhi for another three days and will inspect the wickets at Palam and Harbaksh Ground.

Karnataka in a spot of trouble against unfancied Haryana Veteran seamer Joginder Sharma utilised the windy conditions to perfection to help Haryana restrict Karnataka to 84 for three before heavy rains drew early curtains to the opening day’s play in the rain-affected Ranji Trophy Super League Group B match here yesterday. More... Karnataka in a spot of trouble Principal Correspondent LAHLI (HARYANA): Haryana's medium pacer Joginder Sharma made the most of the favourable conditions claiming three wickets and reducing Karnataka to 84 for three before bad weather played spoilsport on the first day of the Ranji Trophy Super League Group ‘B' match at the Chaudhary Bansi Lal cricket stadium here on Wednesday. Only 30 overs of play was possible and there was no action after lunch because of bad light. It was a typical winter morning at the start of the match and Haryana opted to field first. However, overcast conditions along with a blanket of mist affected visibility and forced the umpires to stop the play for 21 minutes in the first session. Even after the scheduled lunch break, conditions remained gloomy and a drizzle made it even worse. The umpires made four inspections while the players used the time to try out their football skills. The day's play was finally called off half-an-hour before the maximum permissible time limit to stumps. On a pitch with some green patches, Joginder exploited the home conditions well. He opened his account by removing C.M. Gautam (10), then trapped K.B. Pawan (10) in front in his first spell. Later, the host's bowling spearhead returned to capture the wicket of G. Satish (17). Robin Uthappa, who played some trademark flashy shots, survived a few half-chances to stay unbeaten on 36. Manish Pandey, on 3 when play was called off, kept him company.

TN in control against Saurashtra as Abhinav and Arun Karthik slam centuries The scoresheet of the first day's play here at the Khanderi stadium would speak eloquently of the deeds of Abhinav Mukund (102 batting, 229b, 12x4) and K.B. Arun Karthik (107, 179b, 13x4, 1x6). More... TN in control as Abhinav and Arun Karthik slam centuries Special Correspondent -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Play halted 48 minutes before schedule due to bad light and heavy shower -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Rajkot: The scoresheet of the first day's play here at the Khanderi stadium would speak eloquently of the deeds of Abhinav Mukund (102 batting, 229b, 12x4) and K.B. Arun Karthik (107, 179b, 13x4, 1x6). Abhinav showed remarkable calmness and composure to add runs aplenty to his impressive collection of 2,574 runs and nine centuries in 31 first class matches while the latter displayed aggressive intent to place Tamil Nadu in an excellent position at 242 for two in the Elite Group ‘A' Ranji Trophy league match against Saurashtra. Bad light followed by a heavy shower brought a halt to the proceedings 48 minutes before scheduled close. By then, Tamil Nadu had worked itself to a position of strength after a 194-run stand following S. Anirudha's departure off the 13th ball of the match. Saurashtra, meanwhile, will draw some relief at having run Arun Karthik out at the stroke of tea. The Tamil Nadu skipper Dinesh Karthik had correctly said on Tuesday that the pitches in Rajkot had the inherent quality to be batsman-friendly. Left-arm seamer Rathod, picked following his 10-wicket haul in the under-22 tournament — and because Jaidev Unadkat has been asked to report at Nagpur for the third and final Test against New Zealand — was naturally enthusiastic, but failed to make any impact. Saurashtra's plight was evident as the Tamil Nadu innings progressed into the third hour and beyond with Arun Karthik batting fluently and outscoring Abhinav, and eventually reaching his fourth First Class century in four hours and two minutes. Saurashtra skipper Jaidev Shah tossed the ball to Sitanshu Kotak before the tea break and the second wicket fell, not due to the fine craft of the 38-year-old left-arm spinner, but because of a smart piece of work at cover by Ravindra Jadeja. Arun Karthik, who had set off for a run, was sent back by Abhinav and was caught short at the striker's end. But, the fact that Abhinav will resume his unfinished innings with S. Badrinath on Thursday ought to give immense satisfaction to Tamil Nadu, in pursuit of maximum points from this match.

And RPS getting carted around again, just to show that the last match was a one off, what a shame man, he was so good. Seems to be lacking rhythm, form... At least Tyagi is back and picked up a couple, hope he can keep it going and get back into India contention again

There is something about Munaf and Yusuf' date=' in particular. Whenever they get dropped, they'll give great performances in the domestic circuit, get picked again and then disappoint in the limited chances they would get.[/quote'] I think the problem with Munaf is that he's limited as a bowler. He can bowl a very good line and be very consistent plus he has a pretty good yorker also. But the problem with him for the past few years is that once the batsmen get used the that wicket to wicket line they can adjust and start attacking more by stepping out of the crease or shuffling across the stumps. In that case Munaf doesn't have the ability to change up and try something different. But it would be hard to leave him out of the SA squad if he keeps putting in these kind of performances.
