Games round-up of: ROUND IV, DAY 1 Karnataka vs Orissa Joshi shines for Karnataka on Day 1 November 24, 2010 Veteran Sunil Joshi spun a web around Orissa batsmen, taking five for 35 to restrict the visitors to 191 on the first day of their Ranji Trophy Super League match at the M Chinnaswamy Stadium, in Bangalore on Wednesday. In reply, Karnataka were 18 for two when stumps were drawn on the first day. Ganesh Satish survived a testing opening spell after Debasish Mohanty and Alok Sahoo removed K B Pawan and Lokesh Rahul in quick succession. Earlier, after being put into bat, Orissa were off to a disastrous start losing openers Natraj Behera and Shiv Sundar Das within the first three overs. Both the openers, who got out to debutant Adithya Sagar, failed to open their wicket. Niranjan Behera and Govind Podder steadied the innings with a 46-run partnership, before Joshi had Podder caught behind by Muralidharen Gautam, his first victim of the day. Joshi then dismissed Rakesh Mohanty to leave the visitors reeling at 48 for four. With Joshi leading by example and well assisted by Sagar and Sreenath Aravind, Orissa batsmen, with the exception of Niranjan Behera, failed to impress. Behera top scored for Orissa with an unbeaten 83 off 235 balls. His knock was laced with 12 boundaries. Brief scores: Orissa 1st innings: 191 all out (Niranjan Behera 83 not out; Sunil Joshi 5/35) vs Karnataka 18 for two. UP vs Himachal Pradesh Dhawan shines for Himachal Pradesh Pacer Rishi Dhawan shone with a five-wicket haul as Himachal Pradesh bundled out Uttar Pradesh for a paltry 197 in their first innings on the opening day of their Ranji Trophy Super League Group B match in Kanpur. Dhawan (5/80) ripped through Uttar Pradesh's batting as he claimed the wickets of Digvijay Singh (22), captain Mohammad Kaif (9), Bhuvneshwar Kumar (0) and Piyush Chawla (9), after the hosts were sent into bat by the visitors at the Green Park stadium. Uttar Pradesh's batsmen found the going tough against the pace generated by the trio of Dhawan, Anurag Thakur (2/39) and Kuldeep Diwan (2/27), and were reduced to 125 for 6 in 50 overs. Parvinder Singh (46) and Rudra Pratap Singh (47) made a late fightback but that was not enough as Uttar Pradesh folded for 197 in 76.4 overs. While Parvinder struck 4 fours in his 119 balls stay, Singh's fighting knock contained 10 hits to the fence. Singh was the last batsman to depart, becoming the second victim of Diwan. For UP, opener Tanmay Srivastava (34) was the other notable contributor. In reply, Himachal too found themselves in a spot of bother as they were reduced to nine for 2 in five overs at stumps. Opener Bhavin Thakkar was out cheaply for 2 bowled by RP Singh while Gurvinder Singh failed to open his account and was dismissed by RP off his very next ball in the fifth over. Now, RP Singh shows he can bat also as HP's Rishi scalps five Rudra Pratap Singh's 47 off 46 balls, studded with 10 boundaries, not only helped Uttar Pradesh recover from an early collapse, the knock also allowed the former champions to post 197 against Himachal Pradesh in their first innings on a fast-paced pitch at the Green Park Stadium. More... Now, RP can bat also Sharad Deep, Hindustan Times Kanpur, November 24, 2010 Rudra Pratap Singh's 47 off 46 balls, studded with 10 boundaries, not only helped Uttar Pradesh recover from an early collapse, the knock also allowed the former champions to post 197 against Himachal Pradesh in their first innings on a fast-paced pitch at the Green Park Stadium. It didn't end there. The former India player came good with the ball too, snapping up two quick wickets to leave Himachal at 9/2 before the umpires called off the opening day of the Elite Group B Ranji Trophy match due to bad light. RP first shattered Bhavin Thakkar's (2) stumps with an in-swinger in his third over, and then forced night watchman, Gurvinder Singh, (0) to offer a regulation catch to wicketkeeper Mohd Amir Khan off the next ball. At stumps, Sangram Singh, the other opener, (7) and Vineet Indulkar (0) were at the crease. RP's knock, his best in first-class cricket, proved crucial, especially after seamer Rishi Dhawan's five for had the hosts struggling at 125/6. RP had good company in the form of the dependable Parvinder Singh, who chose his shots wisely during a knock of 46 off 119 balls, which contained four boundaries and a six. The duo stitched together 48 for the eighth wicket. UP were 81/2 at lunch, but things changed after Dhawan started to swing the ball both ways. Tanmay Srivastava (34), DS Rawat (22) and Eklavya Dwivedi (13), besides RP and Parvinder, reached double figures. Himachal Pradesh medium-pacer Rishi Dhawan accounted for five Uttar Pradesh wickets as the host was skittled out for 197 in the Ranji Trophy Super League at Kanpur on Wedesday. The visitor had struggled to nine for two at stumps. Brief Scores: UP 197 all out (RP Singh 47, P Singh 46; R Dhawan 5/80, K Diwan 2/27). HP 9/2 (RP Singh 2/6).

Joshi gains his 25th five-wkt. haul against Orissa More... Joshi gains his 25th five-wkt. haul Special Correspondent ONE MORE:Karnataka's Sunil Joshi, who picked up his 25th five-wicket haul in Ranji Trophy, is delighted after accounting for Orissa's Basanta Mohanty. Bangalore: Sunil Joshi proved that the combative fires are still raging inside him despite his 40 summers. On a Wednesday with its share of sunshine and cloud cover, Joshi gained his 25th five-wicket haul in the Ranji Trophy. The left-arm spinner's effort neatly augmented the incisive spells of the seam trio of debutant Aditya Sagar, S. Arvind and Abhimanyu Mithun as Karnataka held the reins against Orissa in the Super League Group ‘B' match that commenced at the Chinnaswamy Stadium. At close on the first day, Karnataka replied with 18 for two after bowling out Orissa for 191 in its first innings. Orissa may take heart from the early strikes by seamers Debashish Mohanty and Alok Sahoo but its batting left much to be desired as right from the first over of the day, its batsmen began to retreat to the pavilion. Sagar got one to dart and Natraj Behera's feeble cut was taken with ease by Robin Uthappa. The seamer then trapped Orissa skipper S.S. Das on the shuffle in the morning's third over and it was left to Niranjan Behera (83 n.o., 235b, 12x4) to offer dour resistance while the rest faded. His feeble support cast remained tentative and though he did string two partnerships of 47 and 43 with Govinda Poddar and Biplab Samantray respectively, Orissa never looked comfortable. Joshi (five for 35) extracted turn and bounce and kept a tight leash while the batsmen played into the hands of the close-in cordon. Niranjan meanwhile survived a bouncer-test from a fired up Mithun and dug out a yorker in time before slashing a four but in the end, he was left stranded.

Rain ruins play between TN and Railway More... Rain ruins play CHENNAI: Tamil Nadu lost S. Aniruda after being asked to bat by Railways on a curtailed first day of a fourth-round Group ‘A' match in the Ranji Trophy Super League. The umpires judged that the outfield of the IIT-Chemplast ground, which had been doused by a localised early-morning shower, was too wet to start play till 4.30 p.m. This left the Tamil Nadu openers a difficult period to negotiate. Smart catch J.P. Yadav, who shared the new ball with Anureet Singh, had Aniruda smartly caught at third slip off the fifth ball of the second over. The loss of his partner didn't seem to bother Abhinav Mukund who looked in fine touch in striking three boundaries. Tamil Nadu had made 26 for one in eight overs when bad light ended the day. The scores: Tamil Nadu — 1st innings: S. Aniruda c Fazal b J.P. Yadav 1, Abhinav Mukund (batting) 19, K.B. Arun Karthick (batting) 5; Extras (nb-1): 1; Total (for one wkt. in eight overs): 26. Fall of wicket: 1-5. Railways bowling: Anureet 4-1-13-0, J.P. Yadav 4-1-13-1 .

RP's speed in this match and the last one was quite good . Consistently hitting 133-134 kmph and getting the ball to move. In the current match, he got the two wickets with two wicked inswingers one bowled at 133 kmph and another at 135 kmph, so the swing is still there, he is slowly get back the pace as well. But he needs many more overs under his belt and perhaps will be well advised to lose some weight. Hopefully by the time the ranji trophy prelim rounds end, he will be back in good shape and at his full fitness. Needs to look at his fielding though, as bad as Munaf.
