Test Cricket's Virtuoso Batsmen

Folks, A few months back I completed a project to determine who were the very best of the best batsmen Test Cricket gave us the pleasure of. I wrote an article on the project and its results on my blog (which I hardly update...lol). I will be redoing this analysis later this season to update it with new info. While doing that I'd also like to take your suggestions to modify (add, remove, change) any criteria and also on its approach. Pls read the article in case it interests you and give me your feedback plus your thoughts on the analysis results to start a discussion on those extremely special batsmen of our game. I am planning to take up a similar project on analyzing the contributions made by these batsmen to their team causes (and will ask for your suggestions for criteria, etc in a diff thread). Firstly, Welcome to :icflove: Nirvanam. Must say, that is one of the best analysis I have ever seen. Spectacular job. I'd like to nominate this for POTW

Any kind of statistical analysis will not sit well with people who donot find their own favorites in the list. ANd your statistical analysis which shows Sachin, Lara, Bradman and Gavaskar as virtuoso batsmen will certainly be ridiculed. In order for your analysis to be accepted by the genral public you need to come up with results showing Jack Hobbs, Hammond and their ancient brethren along with Punter, Dravid, Sehwag, in the same bracket as Sachin + Lara and Bradman far far ahead of the pack :P

Hats off! Great work. u deserve a lot of praise for your effort. People may or may not agree with your parameters ; they may even allege u r playing favourites or insinuate that u r partisan to some players but in my opinion in the last 10 years i have come across very few analysis which have considered all factors quite clearly influencing the rating of an individual batsman.thats a remarkable effort.hats off!

Also, I will start another thread for analyzing the performance of these batsmen in terms of their contribution to their teams' efforts in terms of runs, pretty soon (possibly today itself)...do give me your suggestions to make the criteria better.

(You say it started on Nov '09, and it looks like it's published in may '10) It would be interesting to do this again looking at the fantastic year Sachin has had, to see whether he has surged even further. Also, it would be quite interesting to see ODI Cricket's Virtuoso Batsmen. The parameters would change distinctly, and it would be interesting to see who is the best of the lot. (After Sachin, OBV.)

BTW, a few of Sachin's bug-bears like his average in South Africa, his top ranking point and his one defining innings might all be banished this year and next with the kind of form he is in. And here's hoping for a test 300 from him!

Although I started the project ion Nov 09, the final cutoff for the data was taken at the end of the season to be as "latest" as possible for the still playing ATG's - Sachin, Pawning, Dravid, and Kallis. So the next update I hope to make it for the end of the season again...after WC

Goodness me! A commendable exercise, indeed, Nirvanam. The effort put in is very transparent and everything appears logical. You have got a great eye for stats.

Not hard to see the blogger put in a lot of work to rationalize the stats with several parameters put to use. Commendable effort but not even remotely a definitive work. For example' date=' the Top Opposition Index. How can such an exercise rationalize the IMMENSE gulf in quality of the top opposition faced by Hobbs and Gavaskar?[/quote']Any suggestions to improve the criteria... There is another parameter called Bowler Challenge Index that is kinda addressing the quality of bowlers the guy faced but yes the TOI parameter cannot tell an Australian attack of 1920's apart from a WI attack of the 70's or a Pakistani attack of the 90's Suggestions to improve such things, pls
