The team was quite unstable when Smith took over, as evident from the fact that they could not find a more senior guy for captaincy.

There is more to captaincy than being revered. Tendulkar realized this. Imran, IMO was no better really. He had a better team and bowling power-sides will always be more result oriented/winning than batting powerhouses. But reality, IMO, is that Imran was an ordinary captain when it came to tactics. Often rode his bowlers too hard and cherry-picked a lot to give himself the best bowling times. Imran got away with it too because his team was good and got results in their favor more often than not, especially in the 88-92 period. Bowlers don't make good captains. Simply because they themselves are not completely unbiassed (this is not the same as un-nuanced) about a situation on who to bowl and how to bowl
