I feel the same. CSK should have retained either Muralitharan(if avail) or Ashwin instead of M. Vijay.

what is wrong in having a pro league? it is not practical to have one with tests or ODIs, so the only possibility is with T20s. pretty much every sport has a pro league format and it is good to see that in cricket as well. if you are talking player burn out, yes that is an issue, but it is overblown more by people here than the ones who are playing.

Actually the burn out does affect the players though they dont admit it. There are niggles, injuries, they have to either miss matches due to injury/fatigue or play the Intl matches carrying the fatigue. No time to recover before Intl schedules. Players may not complain of lack of rest since this is Mega Bucks IPL, but it does affect their abilities in subsequent Intl series after the IPL.

Raina is a very good buy for Raina. I'm surprised that Raina stayed with CSK as he could easily fetch atleast 1.3M from Pune. He's a franchise player and CSK already have two in Dhoni and Raina. Maybe CSK management paid him a little bit more off the record:P In the auction, if two teams desperately want one player then who knows how much higher the bidding will be. So good to retain the nucleus of the team right now than later. A bit surprised KXIP didnt retain Yuvraj or Delhi Gambhir and Dilshan. Anybody know how if there is going to be a max bid in the auction?

I don't think UV would have wanted to stay at Kings 11 after all that happened last season when he was sacked as captain and there were rumors of him leaving the team mid season etc.

what off the record? They don't go by claims made by the teams, there are contracts with written information. If you think money exchanges outside of the contract system, that would be illegal and a violation of the cap system.

it certainly would be illegal but it would'nt be the first time this kind of a thing would be happening in sport. Owners give many kind of incentives outside of salary/contract to the players to make them stay at the club.

Epic fail............ How hard is it to simply have a trading system and a cap limit? All this auction bullshit is so pointless and doesnt achieve anything. Through the trading system, the player, and two negotiated teams all have a say. It works out so much more efficiently. All those players that havent been traded or didnt get a contract from their original team. should then be simply put up for auction.

Apparently teams don't have to pay the retained players the amt they will be charged in the cap. It is a mutually agreed upon amount. Remember, a team keeps a player whom they think losing in the auction would mean a bad deal when compared to much they can pre-negotiate and pay for. For those who keep bringing up Vijay's name, may be you missed those games where he whacked the crap out of most opposition last season averaging 35 at 150 SR with 1 100 and 2 50s. The only guy who was better for us was Raina and both those guys have been wisely held back. I am surprised Delhi chose to leave Gambhir unprotected, especially given that Sehwag was the one who was unhappy with mgmt and didn't want to be the captain.

So, in essence, the franchise and the player came to an agreement over the player's remuneration before the retention deadline? I am guessing Warne, Dhoni, and Sachin would have gotten between 1.5 and 1.7.

Last time he made 300k, don't think he going to get 1.5 mill now. I would guess may be like 7-800k.

I am pretty sure all the first choice players would have netted around $2.5-3 million, Dhoni and Tendulkar. Watson, Raina, Harbhajan, Malinga, Kohli, Pollard, Sehwag around the $2-2.5 million mark. Warne, Morkel, and Vijay around the $15.-2 million range.

^ I was trying to draw from the first auction where teams churned out 30% of their total cap on star players like Dhoni, Sehwag, and Tendulkar(not sure if Tendulkar and Sehwag's amount was deducted from the $5 million cap since they were icon players, but regardless they would have fetched that anyways) and just carrying that percentage forward to the cap allowed this time. Not sure if that's the correct way to look at things, but yeah your guess is as good as mine and quite not in the spirit of the added transparency that post Modi IPL was supposed to give.

Reason for retaining a player you MUST have is to not take a chance in the auction. Warne is a MUST for RR, Kumble apparently is not. Also, Warne might get interest from other teams who need a captian like Kochi, KXI, Pune and even KKR. Yes you may get him cheaper, you could also lose him. Like you said, in all likelihood kumble will be there for the the taking by Bangalore. Regarding the amt, it is all based on mutual negotiation, could be 800k, could be 1m, could be 2m, but based on how much RR spent last year and the fact that they are a small market, I am guessing on the lower side.

IPL players' auction postponed

The players' auction scheduled for January 8-9 may be postponed as BCCI is entangled in legal battles against franchises. "There is a possibility that the IPL players' auction may be postponed," the source said, indicating that the court cases might drag on and upset the BCCI's calculations for holding the auction as scheduled. Barring 12 Indian and overseas players retained by the eight original IPL franchises and the foreign cricketers (four maximum) not previously seen in the IPL and signed by the two new franchisees Kochi and Pune, all the remaining top players will go under the auctioneer's hammer.
