He wanted to congratulate him, but didn't wait until the ball was dead. McCullum took the throw and whipped the bails off. also, i didnt see anybody who looked like a Test bat in the entire Test, bar one ex-keeper. terrific ton. take it easy, R

The ball was still in play and the Kiwis were entitled to take advantage of any "opportunity" which arose. Sportsmanship and the "spirit" of the game can be realised in different ways.

Re: an amazing Test... I will try to upload it sometime tomorrow mate. I'm not a big fan of such run outs to be honest. The ICC should probably need to revisit rules such as these. It was very clear Murali was not trying to steal a run and surely the umpire walking to the other side also didn't reassure Murali not to leave the crease before the throw is collected. If there is no intention of taking runs one shouldn't be out "RUN OUT" surely. Some how the "RUN OUT" simply doesn't make sense here. Our media here have given McCullum a dressing down but he has simply responded it is a way to get a wicket and he sees no wrong in it. Unfortunately this incident has taken the glare away from one of the best 100s you will ever see. That 100 by Sangakkara was simply put one of the best I've seen considering the amount of runs produced by both the team in the test match. Sheer class that knock, some of the back foot shots were just amazing.

"You can't just wander off when the ball's in mid-air and if we'd had an overthrow I'm sure they would have taken that.

I can almost visualize murali sprinting for an overthrow :duh:

Nothing wrong with the rule....U cant just leave ur crease before the ball is dead..If they change the rule,how long will it be before the pakis (and aussies) use this to cheat! I can imagine,afridi walking lazily down the ground and then sprinting when the fielders throw the ball slowly... Murali was caught up in the moment and did something stupid...Reminds me of the blooper clip in american football,when no one tagged the guy with the ball cos he fell down,they thought the play was over,he just got up and ran and scored a touchdown..

No, I think you may be talking about the Spirit of Cricket Award the ICC gave them for 04. This incident wasn't in that year. What WAS in the relevant year though was Stephen Fleming's premeditated verbal assault on Graeme Smith at Eden Park, a magnificently Machiavellian/Borderesque maneuver (particularly as it was timed for the moment when the cameras weren't broadcasting) but nothing near sportsmanship.

So umpires are supposed to remind cricketers who have played over 100 test matches that they cannot leave the crease when the ball is in play ? Come on Ravi, that sounds ridiculous. Murali knows what the rules are, and McCullum's action was well within the rules. Intent has absolutely nothing to do with it. I suppose you don't approve of Raina's or Harmison's "run out" of Inzamam, Mankading or Chappell bowling underarm either ?
