Sachin=GOD Posted January 24, 2011 Posted January 24, 2011 It is easy to speak after the fact. How do you know the deserving Kaif's replacement would not have gotten a double century? Just because he got a century here does not exonerate one of their folly, CZ selectors in this case when they should have selected players who earned it through performing in the Ranji trophy. And one could have understood it if Kaif is in the reckoning for playing for India or needed few games to get ready after an injury lay off before representing India. No such scenario here. All the more reason for the CZ selectors to stick to the script and go by the score book in Ranji trophy. Fair enough. But when he got a chance (however unworthy he might have been of that chance on the basis of Ranji performances) he made the most of it and performed quite well so I see no reason why he should'nt be applauded for his good batting. Its like the selection of Chawla in the World Cup squad - majority of the people (including me) are saying that it is a wrong selection and he did not deserve his spot. Now if he gets a chance in the World Cup and performs well, then irrespective of his previous record or the circumstances of his selection, he deserves to be praised for his good performance - simple as that.
The Outsider Posted January 24, 2011 Posted January 24, 2011 Why can't you name the batsman then who you'd like to play in place of Kaif for Central Zone' date=' who you think can go on to represent India too?[/quote'] LOL! The guy is clueless about Indian domestic cricket as evidenced by his remarks on Kaif. Replacement? He won't be able to name even first choice players without typing cricinfo.com on his browser. Here is what he will do in response to your question - go to cricinfo, pull out the names of the highest scorers in Ranji this season, filter the ones who qualify for CZ, and pick out the highest scorer who did not play the match.

Pick one and get back to him. Yeah I have no clue about domestic and you do. Whatever....

Looks like in addition to knowledge of domestic cricket you are in an urgent need of some brains as well.
pensionplan Posted January 24, 2011 Posted January 24, 2011 Why would I answer that question when I believe that Kaif deserved his spot? :Whether you believe it in or not since you took the liberty to guess others sources why not finish the job for them as well. Chandan Posted January 24, 2011 Author Posted January 24, 2011 No need to drag it it on, if you can't name the player who you think has been robbed by Kaif's inclusion. Close the discussion here.

Sorry, doesn't make sense. Because I guessed your methodology on answering a particular question, the question has to become relevant to me? You do understand that this chain of thought defies Logic 101? In light of this you would be better advised to not ignore the part where I asked you to hunt around for some brain power.

More than a particular player if you see my broader point, in Kaif you have a player that is on the wrong side of 30 that is not even one of the top 50 Ranji run scorers which means there are surely younger players be it representing Rajasthan, Railways or UP etc who could have better made use of the opportunity and should have been selected in his place in the middle order. If Kaif would have been among the runs just as a Chopra or a Jaffer then the discussion would have been different. That he is not gives credence to people like me asking for a young player be given a chance who has outscored Kaif this season and who knows what would have happened then? I do not think there is much to argue there.

The Outsider Posted January 24, 2011 Posted January 24, 2011 Wrong side of 30? The guy is 30 years and 54 days old!

pensionplan Posted January 24, 2011 Posted January 24, 2011 Wrong side of 30? The guy is 30 years and 54 days old! If only he found a way to score more runs than his teammates Chawla and Parvinder this Ranji season his age would have been secondary. With the growing uselessness every little thing will get more scrutiny and whether one likes it or not at 30 and advancing and Kaif's batting skills good luck.

It's not difficult to figure out that Kaif was selected because of his experience and a better ability to score against higher quality attacks than his competitors. Fact is that CZ has a paucity of batting talents, and selecting even an out of form Kaif is not impeding the development or growth of any youngsters. If you browse through the 50 top run scorer list you have been whinging about, you will be hard pressed to find many batsmen from CZ, let alone with the potential and performance to represent India in the future. In such a scenario, the selectors went with the experience of Kaif, and he repaid their faith with a hundred in a winning cause for CZ.

When a player is incapable of scoring runs at the Ranji level this season where even Chawla outscores him that is not saying much at all of the said player. Just because he scored a century here in one game does not mean the discussion be discarded after the fact based on what transpired. Coming to representing India Kaif as of now has zero chance to even have a sniff at the Indian team and at 30 instead of selecting him why not select someone like the 20 year old Railways player Awasthi who has scored more runs this Ranji season and see what he is up to. After all that is how many a player made it through the ranks over the years being virtual unknowns at one point. Just because CZ supposedly has a dearth in batting talents does not mean one needs to fall back on mediocrity in the name of experience even when that said player did not perform in the prior domestic tournament a basis for getting selected into the Zonal teams.
The Outsider Posted January 24, 2011 Posted January 24, 2011 As expected, you just picked the highest Ranji run scorer from CZ who did not play the match.
Raghav_12 Posted January 24, 2011 Posted January 24, 2011 Though I agree that while selecting teams for domestic tournaments, selectors should look at future potential for country, but at the same time these tournaments should not be considered just selection trials for natinal team. If selectors do that, then they are undermining these prestigious trophies. If I was selector of any zonal team for Duleep trophy, my first aim would have been to select a team which will get trophy to my zone. In process I'll also try to give chances to players who can be future players for India. Lack of quality batsmen from CZ might have forced selectors to go for Kaif and ofcourse he justified his selection. On the sidenote, isn't Sunil Joshi still playing Ranji for Karnataka? What chances he has of playing for India again?
Raghav_12 Posted January 24, 2011 Posted January 24, 2011 its better they play Ranji ODI tournament rather than Duleep Standard of teams in Ranji ODI's are poor in general. Zonal teams, if at full strength, are fairly strong (almost as good as India "A" teams) and competition could be really great. I would prefer if player participate in Duleep trophy.
saneindian Posted January 24, 2011 Posted January 24, 2011 When I said Duleep trohy, I also meant other domestic tournaments. But then Ranji List A matches are too close to the WC (from 10th Feb). Ideally, we should have a conditioning camp running for 5-6 days before the warm up games start on 13th Feb. And that perhaps leaves DT as the only possible option to go and get some runs under your belt.
ludhianvi Posted January 24, 2011 Posted January 24, 2011 It's amazing how people with no clue about domestic cricket hand over titles like His Uselessness. Sure, he might not be the best option or close to it for the national team, how does it automatically qualify him as useless. BTW, his FC average is not much different from certain primadonas of Indian cricket like Yuvraj and Raina, neither his Test average. Actually, you'd be surprised to know that Yuvraj has a FC average of 50 in the context that it is being discussed here. Cricinfo combines all the Tests + domestics in its First Class stats which is ok but it confuses some that it is only considering domestic and tour matches. So excluding the Tests, Yuvi averages 50 in FC.
urbestfriend Posted January 25, 2011 Posted January 25, 2011 No need, Its not that they are terribly out of form or something. All of them are hitting in the middle but its just that they are not spending long time in the crease. Let them take sufficient rest and get ready for Worldcup with full energy. Last thing we want is one of them get injured in these matches which will seriously hamper the balance of the team.
