Peter Siddle and Xavier Doherty were not included while John Hastings, the Victoria allrounder, was named along with the injured duo of Ricky Ponting and Michael Hussey. Hussey picked up a serious hamstring tear in Sunday's ODI at the MCG while Ponting is recovering from surgery to his little finger. Both experienced men have plenty of time to recover before the tournament reaches the knockout stages, with the quarter finals starting on March 23. Australia's opening match of the campaign is against Zimbabwe in Ahmedabad on February 21. Lee and Tait have both returned from long-term elbow injuries and the selectors have kept faith in their speed, bodies and shock value. Mitchell Johnson and Doug Bollinger are the other pace specialists in the unit, while Hastings and Shane Watson will provide support. Nathan Hauritz is the sole recognised spinner but Steven Smith and David Hussey will also be relied on to deliver regular overs. Bowling looks very uni-dimensional with all pace and pace attack with Tait,Lee and Johnson.

Manny_Pacquiao Posted January 17, 2011 Posted January 17, 2011 thats a quality team. ashes defeat notwithstanding, they are gonna be tough to beat. watson paine/hussey/ ponting clarke hussey haddin/steve smith white johnson hauritz tait/lee bollinger thats a really well rounded team. people are gonna ask questions about the effectiveness of a pace-heavy bowling attack on subcontinent wickets but that combination worked well for them whenever they played in india. this was the last team to beat india in an ODI series, and that was a full strength indian XI. only question mark is the opening position. too bad they didnt pick shaun marsh, he would have been much better than paine, hussey or haddin at the top

In the weaker group so should easily get to quarters. Would have taken Jason Krezja.

India's destiny is in their own hands - specifically Sachin and Sehwag. If these two come to the party no one will be able to stay with them. However, if Dhoni does his usual of f£$king them off, particularly Sehwag, this Australian side will have us for breakfast.

The Outsider Posted January 18, 2011 Posted January 18, 2011 That's a very good squad and their ODI unit is still very strong, not to be confused with their lack of success in test matches. How far they go will depend on the kind of pitches they play on. On pattas, they will be extremely tough to beat. However, if they play on turning tracks, I can easily see them going out. Hauritz is the only spin option they have and he is very ordinary. If they come up against India or Sri Lanka on a track with some turn, I don't see them getting through.

The real weakness is if the pacers fail with the new ball, they don't have much to rely upon. Also if they had to pick Hauritz ahead of all other spinners, why ws he dropped in the first place from the team? Did not get picked in the series vs Sri Lanka and did not play in the t20s or ODI vs England.

Like the first season of the IPL, he can win the thing single handed; as he just did against England at the MCG.

Also take the conditions into account, the workload for Watto could be huge. Fielding for 50 overs and then coming out to bat, he will be challenged and somehow I feel Aussies will not use him much as a bowler in the prelim stages.
