How long before the 200 run barrier is breached again?

On the 24th of February 2010, Sachin Tendulkar became the first man to touch the 200 run mark in a ODI international, overtaking Charles Covernty who had equalled or broken Saeed Anwar's record (depending yon your viewpoint of the not out factor) in august 2009. Since then we have seen 64 centuries been scored and the 150 mark being breached 4 times. 1. P. Stirling 177 (134 balls) ------> dismissed 44.5 overs. 2. V.Sehwag 175 (140 balls) -------> dismissed 47.3 overs 3. S.Watson 161 (150 balls) --------> not out (49.4) 4. A. Strauss 154 (140 balls) --------> dismissed 45.3 overs. 5. A STrauss 158 (145 balls) ---------> dismissed 42.5 overs 6. S.Watson 185(96 balls) ------------> not out, batted only 26 overs With flat batting tracks, weak bowling attacks, smaller grounds, plenty of major verses minnow matches to come, how soon do you think the 200 run barrier will be breached again? Most attacking opening batsmen back themselves to break the barrier if they play out the 50 overs. Atleast Gayle fancies his chances....

West Indies batting star Chris Gayle wants to emulate India's Sachin Tendulkar and notch up one-day cricket's second double-century at the World Cup. Tendulkar rewrote the record books in February last year by hammering an unprecedented 200 not out against South Africa. Tendulkar's team-mate and opening partner Virender Sehwag came close to matching his feat in India's opening World Cup match against Bangladesh last week before being dismissed for 175. Gayle, also an attacking opener, believes he can achieve the magical mark if he bats out the 50 overs. "The master-blaster (Sachin Tendulkar) got it. A guy like Sehwag can get it. These are the guys who can get it once they get off to a good start. You bat through the 50 overs and it becomes a possibility. "If I get a chance, I'll definitely chase it," said Gayle, whose highest score in one-day internationals is the 153 not out he scored against Zimbabwe in 2003.

I think best chances would definately be Sehwag, Gayle or Watson. I think of all them though, Gayle is the most likely. However, don't see many others out there who could break it.

1987 WC saw 181* by Viv Richards against then minnows Lanka 1996 WC saw 188* by Gary Kirsten vs another minnow UAE 210-215 surely looks likely in this WC.

That's the thing though, I wouldn't like to see the record broken against a minnow side, seeing Tendulkar set his against SA.

Its defn. possible to break it. I always found it odd that the 200 barrier wasnt broken earlier. In the last few years, 170 mark has been reached a dozen or so times. 180+ has also happened a few times. Just a few more hits and that 200 could have been reached. Dhoni could have done it if we were chasing a bigger target. India still had 4 more overs to go when he got 183 and won the game.Gibbs 175 came in the 32nd over.Some others could have done it with just a couple of more overs. But it took so long to break that barrier and that too barely.

Its not easy record to get it. Batting for 45+ overs takes toll. With hot conditions, it won't be easy, no matter or what. I don't see anyone gettign there in this WC for sure

According to statsguru From 1971 to 31 dec 1999 -----> 21 batsmen score 150+ in an ODI -----> with Richards (3) Lara (2) and Ganguly(2) scoring the most. Tendulkar had scored 1. SInce 01 Jan 2000 till date--------> 40 batsmen have breached the 150 barrier ------>with tendulkar(4) Jayasuriya (3) and Gayle (3) leading the pack. Powerplays were first introduced on 07 july 2005, since then 28 batsmen have scored 150+, Infact only 12 of these scores were against minnows. With the 150 mark being regularly breached lately, a time may come when the 200 run mark becomes a regularity. It doesnt seem likely just yet, But in a few years time it could very well be.

should be broken in next 12 months, probably in this WC itself as lot of weak teams will be playing against top teams. The 200 Mark can only be broken by an opener, so my bests will be on Sehwag > Gayle > Dilshan > Watson

Can certainly be broken in this world cup - I expect a Sri Lankan batsman to break it because Sri Lanka almost certainly creates some new records in ICC tournaments.

IMO this record could have been set as back as in the 80s, if they did not change to 50 overs mid way. Still Viv Richards came close in 87 (imagine if he has opened the batting) Gary could have done it in 96. And I see atleast one 200+ score in this WC. I back Sachin, Viru, Gayle, McCullum, Watson - anyone of these can do it this WC. mods - can we have a bet on this?
