Actually, the comment that most girls only have a cursory interest in sports is absolutely correct, anywhere in the world. the percentage could be slightly more in developed countries like USA because of scoio economic factors.the but the pattern is the same. even my american or european colleagues/contacts pretty much confirm the same pattern there as well. politics and sports are the staple subjects for many males..most females are unlikely to join the conversation.

I wouldn't necessarily disagree with you. But the argument here is about 'liking' sports. A girl ( or a non girl for that matter) doesn't have to be a 'serious student' of the game to like it. Most followers of any sport are just casual supporters. Me included. So this argument is slightly tangential to the OP's question. And most casual supporters are able to hold a conversation on the sport more often than not. You really don't have to be a 'higher level' supporter to exchange a few words on cricket. You don't have to be an expert on politics and current affairs to cast your vote. It still counts for the same. :P

So this argument is slightly tangential to the OP's question. even among casual supporters, i could certainly notice the differences in the interests of men and women in sports. for example in an typical indian corporate office, while almost every man in one wing could be glued to a cricket score(with 1% exception), i could see FAR more than 2% of girls not caring a damn about it . the scene may not be that different at other places as well right? You don't have to be an expert on politics and current affairs to cast your vote. It still counts for the same. the result of that ? the quality of our elected politicans are all there to see! :--D
