achilles Posted March 5, 2011 Posted March 5, 2011 Raina bats lower down the order and still averages freakishly in upper 30s. Kohli has probably the best spot to bat at. He scores very slow for 3/4 of his innings and then takes few riscks in the end and then gets out soon. Virat gets the hundreds, has a phenomenal average, has a better technique and is the #2 batsman in the World.
falconhawk Posted March 5, 2011 Posted March 5, 2011 Why are some of you guys focusing on part-time bowlers too much? It won't help. Sachin bowls, Sehwag bowls, Yuvraj bowls, Raina bowls, Yusuf Pathan bowls, all are part-time bowlers. we need specialist bowler like Bhajji.
saneindian Posted March 5, 2011 Posted March 5, 2011 Virat gets the hundreds' date=' has a phenomenal average, has a better technique and is the #2 batsman in the World.[/quote'] Sir, what happened to your pre-world cup prediction of Raina and Ashwin, the CSK boys, getting to play ahead of Kohli and all others in the world cup final 11 in first few matches? :--D
Jersey #10 Posted March 5, 2011 Posted March 5, 2011 Virat gets the hundreds' date=' has a phenomenal average, has a better technique and is the #2 batsman in the World.[/quote'] #2 batsman doesn't mean he wins matches. He contributes and rather plays at his own pace out of the context of the game. Raina on the other hand plays according to the game situation. He can build slow and steady partnerships as well as fire when needed.

Agreed that Raina has an aggressive game, but if aggression and switching gears is all that is required, don't you think he would be playing in the XI?

achilles Posted March 5, 2011 Posted March 5, 2011 he should be, in fact, he deserve to I can bet you that Raina can walk into most of the top 8 teams right now Maybe. But lets not doubt the intellect of the Indian think-tank. They must have taken a lot of things into consideration, isn't it? Rather than being subjected to a vociferous defense, Raina should instead by focussing on upping his game. That would do him and us Indians a world of good, esp. when he's up against the fast bowlers
Zap_Brannigan Posted March 5, 2011 Posted March 5, 2011 No. Kholi is our best bet if Sachin and Sehwag fail based on recent form. The only change i would make to the current team is to bring Ashwin instead of chawla and I am an ardent fan of raina. Yuvi just brings a better dimension to our bowling attack.
Ultimate_Game Posted March 5, 2011 Posted March 5, 2011 he could be taken for cleaners. but who knows???:--D. on indian pitches raina is a better batsman than kohli. raina can come in handy if we need more than 7 or 8 runs per over. kohli a slow starter. Can you for once back your rantings and delusions with stats? I have made my case for both batting and bowling with stats. So far what I've heard from you in response is "kohli's bowling sucks" or "Raina is a much better batsman". Care to back any of your statements with stats and facts? Picking a batsman for his bowling is unheard of. Only Eng tried it in 90s with the likes of Hollioakes, Ealhams, Dougie Browns and the likes. On paper they batted till 10 and had 9 "bowlers" but where did it get them? They were ranked last among the Test playing nations. Kohli being dropped in favor of Raina for Raina's bowling is something I expected a Paki fan to come up with. The logic is so flawed it doesn't even merit a discussion. In nutshell if the specialist bowlers can't make a difference Raina's bowling won't do much either as his bowling stats prove so far. But we would definitely be losing a great in-form batsman to accomodate iffy bowling skills of a much lesser batsman.
Ultimate_Game Posted March 5, 2011 Posted March 5, 2011 he should be, in fact, he deserve to I can bet you that Raina can walk into most of the top 8 teams right now Raina will only walk into the lesser teams, not the stronger ones. I can't see the likes of Aus or SA making way for Raina. SA didn't even pick Albie Morkel in the world cup squad for crying out loud and he's the guy who is an amazing hitter down the order and his bowling skills are in a different league to Raina's.

Thats really hard-hitting. I feel that the call for picking Raina is more on the basis of obsession than logic.
saneindian Posted March 5, 2011 Posted March 5, 2011 In such a long tournament, Raina the additional batsman in the 15 will have his time sooner or later. You would not expect us to play 9 matches with the same top 7. So Raina needs to keep working hard, keep himself motivated and then when he eventually gets his chance grab it with Lee and contribute big. As of now, let's go with the same line up that we tried vs England.
Sachin=GOD Posted March 5, 2011 Posted March 5, 2011 For those of you doubting Raina's batting abilities please see this: Link He's the best batsmen at no 6 in the World in the last 2 years and has an average of 45 and strike rate of 102 which is quite outstanding coming lower down the order. If we have to go with 7 batsmen then he should be in the team instead of Yusuf Pathan.

Slogger with no intl. credentials becomes "Allah" while playing for CSK and then a moron once the IPL is done?
ghost Posted March 5, 2011 Posted March 5, 2011 Drop Yusuf and bring in Raina. The idea of dropping Kohli is absolutely foolish - the guy is among the very best batsmen in the World on current form and we've got people who say he still should be dropped :wall: I agree.... I too was stunned by this thread which suggested dropping the in-form Kohli ! If anyone needs to be dropped its Yuvraj and Chawla, which won't happen as Dhoni seems to be very fond of these 2 non-performers ! Best of luck, India ; you will need it, with a captain like Dhoni ! I really hope the opposition keeps making mistakes; that's the only way we can win this WC !
Sid Posted March 5, 2011 Posted March 5, 2011 Kuch bhi bolega tu abhi. Slogger with no intl. credentials becomes "Allah" while playing for CSK and then a moron once the IPL is done? You and your love for CSK  and for whom he is Allah :cantstop:

When SA visited Aus and beat Aus 4-1 in the odis Morkel was one of the key players - his batting lower down the order and during batting powerplays was the difference between the two sides in at least 2 games. As for his bowling if you think their bowling skills are comparable the only thing I can say is that maybe you need to check their bowling stats. In fact if we had Morkel I would play him in place of Pathan as he would give us a fast bowling option allowing us to play 4 specialist bowlers (2 spin and 2 fast) and a decent hitter down the order.
The Outsider Posted March 5, 2011 Posted March 5, 2011 ^ Morkel's batting can at best be compared to Afridi. I agree that there is no spot for Raina in the current Indian team, but to compare his batting to a slogger like Morkel is disgraceful really. Since you were talking about stats, here is one - Morkel's ODI average after 51 matches is a handsome 22.

He has been a tried and tested intl. failure, you have come up with his 2 performances which were again 2 years back .I may have been little bit harsh by terming him a slogger :--D but fact of the matter is you cant compare him in batting with someone like Raina. As far as bowling is concerned,I have seen enough of his bowling ,never have I seen him go for less than 6RPO ,he is always targeted by a batting side and almost always ends up giving away more runs than anyother bowler in display :giggle: Anyways point is Kohli has to play ahead of Raina stay on that, lets not drift threads attention to Raina vs Morkel :P
