Sir john Posted March 28, 2011 Posted March 28, 2011 Former England captain Michael Vaughan has said Stuart Broad should be the next England one-day captain if Andrew Strauss steps down from the role. Batsman Alistair Cook has been tipped to take up the role but Vaughan stated a bowler could be more effective. "I just think the one-day team might grow under someone like Stuart Broad who plays it pretty tough," Vaughan told BBC Sport. "Maybe the one-day team needs a different approach and direction." Strauss has faced criticism following the manner of England's exit from the World Cup against Sri Lanka. England lost the quarter-final by 10 wickets to end a World Cup campaign that also included a defeat against Ireland. Prior to the World Cup, England rounded off a successful Ashes Test series win in Australia by being comprehensively beaten 6-1 in the one-dayers. Strauss' position as ODI skipper is likely to come under scrutiny in the May review of their winter performances and it is widely thought Cook was being lined up to replace the Middlesex batsman. Essex left-hander Cook also led England's Test side on their tour of Bangladesh in 2010 when Strauss opted to skip the six-week tour. But Vaughan believes Broad could be the better option and added: "I think it would be the right move. "We may have to change something, go in with a different approach, go in with a different man in the helm - a bowler that bats." Nottinghamshire seamer Broad, who missed the final three Ashes Tests during the tour of Australia, played no further part in the World Cup after being injured against South Africa - a match in which he took 4-15. "I've always felt since the first time Stuart Broad came into the England side under my captaincy, he has some kind of drive and is positive and aggressive," the former England captain continued. Broad wouldn't be a massive gamble. Cook wouldn't let England down, he'd be a decent captain - but I think the England side might grow under someone like Broad Michael Vaughan "He'll get close to the line. He might just be an outside chance." And while Vaughan, who captained England in 60 ODIs between 2003 and 2007, is adamant that Strauss will decide his own one-day future, he also believes a change in direction is required. "England since 1992 have done very badly in one-day cricket," the former Yorkshire batsman added. "The last four or five captains have all been batsman and back to 1992 under Graham Gooch. "I've always gone on gut feelings and I think England may just favour going with someone who maybe not many people have thought of. "Broad wouldn't be a massive gamble. England are due to discuss Strauss's future as ODI captain before the start of their summer series against Sri Lanka and India at a debrief which will be chaired by England and Wales Cricket Board managing director Hugh Morris.

achilles Posted March 28, 2011 Posted March 28, 2011 Michael, I've respected you a lot over the years, but with comments like this and that England can beat India anywhere, they are the new #1 and stuff is really not winning you a lot of friends. This is quite a ludicrous suggestion from someone as balanced and experienced as you.

Hell Raiser Posted March 28, 2011 Posted March 28, 2011 ^ Swann is in his 30s So? Andrew strauss was also made captain when he was 32. Swann can captain the side till next world cup. I don't see any other player who plays consistently for England and doesn't get injured. Morgan can be the option but IMO Swann is the perfect man to captain the side. After all he is their best player.

Yeah right. :cantstop: Agree with you on Morgan that he can also be the option. Swann is a good bowler but he is not an outstanding bowler as he's made out to be by many people. And he definitely does'nt look like Captaincy materiel IMO.
