Maharashtra assembly recommends Bharat Ratna for Tendulkar

I think the MGR award was the only one for political reasons - ironically he doesnt belong to the DMK. And I am not sure about the reasoning behind the award to Chidambaram Subramaniam - dont know too much about him. But, Remaining all of them have been undoubted stalwarts in their spheres. If you think otherwise, state your reasoning. DMK has ill gotten a lot of things unfairly from the center because of state politics, but the Bharat Ratnas are not one of them.

He was also the architect of a number of welfare schemes.[/quote'] thing is, if you look at the history of different states in India you will find at least one or two leaders from each state whose contribution to the freedom struggle, to the state and to the country are immense - you look at Maharashtra, there's Yashwantrao Chavan, you look at Uttar Pradesh there's Acharya Kriplani, you look at Kerela there's Namboodiripad etc etc. All these contributed equally (if not more) than Kamraj but did'nt get Bharat Ratna.

In fact last year also, his name was recommended. Also, a Sate Govt would never recommend a name if it knew that that particular profession was not eligible for consideration.

One of the very few completely honest and straight forward politicans in India. He was himself only educated till the 5th standard so he recognised the importance of education and took a lot of steps to improve accessibility of schools to rural children. The mid day meals scheme now adopted in whole of India was started by him. he was also a very very powerful politician (not only at the state level but at central level too), so I am not sure if he got the award because of his political credentials, but I am sure that he totally deserved it.

Sachin deserving candidate for Bharat Ratna: Dhoni

CHENNAI: World Cup winning Indian cricket captain Mahendra Singh Dhoni on Wednesday joined the growing calls to award batting ace Sachin Tendulkar the Bharat Ratna, saying no cricketer deserves it more than him. "Yes, 200 per cent, because he is an ideal candidate, he has served the country for 21 years with a few more to come. As a cricketer, you know, if he doesn't get it, then I don't think there's anyone who'll get the Bharat Ratna ever," Dhoni said. "I think he's done really great things for the country, taking cricket to the next level. He's known even in places where they don't know about the game, so I think it's a very big achievement taking the country forward. He's done remarkably," the Chennai Super Kings skipper said at a press meet to kickstart the IPL's fourth season, starting on Friday. Former India captain Rahul Dravid feels that although Sachin Tendulkar is yet to be conferred ’Bharat Ratna’, he is already one for the millions of cricket crazy Indians. “I don’t know when he (Sachin) will get it officially as I am not aware of the rules. But he is already a ‘Bharat Ratna’ for Indian people because of his phenomenal success and the manner in which he has served Indian cricket for years,” Dravid told the mediapersons at a promotional event of his new IPL team Rajasthan Royals. Dravid, who is now only considered for Test cricket is hopeful that he will do well for his new IPL team. “I have played in the first three editions of IPL and this format is not new to me. The Indian media is the absolute worst. They find new and ingenious ways to put pressure on the man. First, the champagne from the grand win a world cup final had barely stopped flowing when they began bombarding him with questions about his retirement. Now, they are beginning to stir the pot over giving the Bharat Ratna to Sachin. I am pretty sure Sachin absolutely loathes all this unsolicited publicity. But to his credit, he has gotten progressively better at handling these media distractions.

'Tendulkar does not qualify for award' New Delhi: The calls for bestowing Sachin Tendulkar with the ‘Bharat Ratna' may have got louder after India's World Cup triumph, but giving the country's highest civilian honour to him would require tweaking of the criteria that has been laid down for the coveted award. The ‘Bharat Ratna' was started in 1954 and has so far been given to 41 eminent personalities, none of whom are sportspersons, the reason being the criteria for the coveted honour. Constitutional expert Subhash Kashyap says given the current rules “Tendulkar does not qualify for the honour and giving the award to him would require a change in the rules.” According to the criteria at present, the award is given for exceptional contribution in the fields of art, literature, science and social service. The criteria does not have any mention of sports. Kashyap says the government has to decide whether it wants to include sports in the criteria for the award. The Sports Ministry will have to present such a proposal for cabinet approval. Indian cricket team's prominent players such as Mahendra Singh Dhoni, Harbhajan Singh, Yuvraj Singh and Virender Sehwag have all asked for the honour to be bestowed on Tendulkar. ============================ So guys, What do you think, will the rules be tweaked for him? I can almost guarantee that the rules will be changed because not only him but a few other sportpersons also deserve it - Major Dhyan Chand should also be given one posthumously IMO.
