anotherhawkeye Posted April 13, 2011 Posted April 13, 2011 It's generally agreed among cricket aficionados that Test cricket is the best form of cricket. It's like a chess match. But the problem is some/many matches could end in a draw. That really sucks for the fan who spent 5 days watching/following the game to go home without a result. It may be the beauty of the contest, but still a 'contest' in general always have an winner. Any thoughts on how to make it better? I know we are far less of men to decide the future of cricket, but consider it a fun exercise. Put your ICC hat on. If status quo is not an option, what is one thing that you would do to make test cricket better? I was having arguments with friends about this and we came up with variations of these five options below. 1. Make them timeless as it was done some time back: Don't end the game in 5 days. Give them as much time as needed. Need to increase the overs in a day to 100 so that matches will get over sooner than later. May be 12 players in a team (11 on the ground at any time) to rotate players to prevent exhaustion? 2. Decrease number of days to 4, increase overs to 100 per day: Test matches will start on Thursday and end on Sunday. Only 4 days, so will end sooner. Matches might still end on a draw, but it'll draw more crowd due to weekend factor. 3. 4 days, 100 overs per day, day/night: A variation of last option except that the matches are all played at day/night. More crowd. 4. Limit number of overs per team: A long version of ODI, guaranteed to produce a result. Divide the 400 overs into 4 innings. Say, 120 overs for first innings and 80 overs for second innings. Team with most runs will win. 5. Limit number of innings to 1: Only one innings per team. Thoughts? I'm not endorsing any of them, I'm just putting them here. So be gentle. Many of the idea seem silly to me, so status quo might be the best option. That's why 'better' is in quotes.

akshayxyz Posted April 13, 2011 Posted April 13, 2011 Replace IPL T20 with double round robin(home & away) test series between top 3/4 test teams (or 4 Franchised test teams). 12 matches (4 teams, double round robin) can be easily accommodated in 2 months.

Do you really like something specific in the current Test format that will go away when following any of these options -- What do you like in the 4 inning, 5 day option that will go away in the 4 day,400 over option or 4 day, 2 innings option? The intent of the post is to stir conversation. I know some of the options I listed are really "out there", but the reason for posting them is for some one to eloquently respond as to why they like the current format and why they don't like to change it.

The no maidens rule would be an absolute classic if implemented, imagine, Sachin Tendulkar walks to the crease, tries to play himself in, oh no he just played out a maiden. Well its happy hour for sledging folks, yes for 1 hour of a days anything goes in terms of sledging, nothing is taboo be it race, family, religion and sexuality etc. You see the purpose of happy hour is to see just how mentally tough the batsman is, afterall that is one of the most challenging aspects of test match cricket.

It's much better these days. Cricket is ever evolving. From Test to 60 over ODI to 50 over ODI to 20/20. May be it's time for test matches to evolve little bit. Or may be not.
