ViruRulez Posted April 19, 2011 Posted April 19, 2011 I was also confused if my ISP blocked ICF by mistake. Was the site deleted or something by mistake Rajiv? The last 3 days had some of the most interesting matches and missed ICF for the fun threads. :D Rajiv and other adminds I would advise to try out Nginx or Varnish Cache as I mentioned previously in another thread. I dont think it was a hacker attack too as an attack would never last for 3 days and that too for a mere cricket forum. But Nginx also helps in reducing attacks by filtering out pure HTTP requests and sending them to the server. I would advise the admins to give Nginx a try. Nginx 1.0.0 stable version was also released a few days ago on 12th April. It should be able to handle a lot more connections compared to Apache. I am highly satisfied and reduced my server costs significantly after trying out in a couple of servers. Many vbulletin forums including some of India's biggest vbulletin forums already use it and I would highly advise you to try it on ICF and it should solve most of the problems IMO. Official website for Nginx http://nginx.org/ Official website for Varnish Cache http://www.varnish-cache.org/ Varnish cache might be useful if you are not interested in using Nginx. However, you might use Nginx as the front end for static content and still allow Apache to handle the backend work. Here is an article at official vB forums with benchmark test for Apache + Varnish cache vs Litespeed. http://www.vbulletin.com/forum/entry.php/2452-Boosting-vBulletin-performance-via-caching-Apache-Varnish-versus-Litespeed-Cache However, most report that Nginx is even faster than Litespeed and also completely free. A few were worried about stable version not getting released but now they have also released the stable version 1.0.0 finally and most issues are fixed now from what it seems. My personal recommendation would be Nginx for sure especially with the latest stable version release. If you dont want to do that then maybe you can try out Varnish to handle the traffic load.

suraj Posted April 20, 2011 Posted April 20, 2011 Ravi, Varun and Ludh are Tech Lords here I am just one of the founders, admin - thats all But seriously what happened??? What was the reason for it being down??
ViruRulez Posted April 20, 2011 Posted April 20, 2011 Ravi, Varun and Ludh are Tech Lords here I am just one of the founders, admin - thats all Did not know that you do not actually take care of the server side of things. If Varun, Ludh etc. has time then you can advice about the same as the crashes on ICF are becoming a lot more frequent lately maybe due to increase in traffic. Even if no one has got time, then you can get some server admin guy to do it. You can check http://www.webhostingtalk.com All the top web hosting companies of the world as well as most of the top server admins are there. I am also not into the server side of things but get it done from others. I know some basic SSH commands etc. and basic server management though but nothing much more than that. :P However, I would advise you to check reviews as well as cost comparison before getting anyone to do the job in case you hire anyone from WHT for the Nginx installation or Varnish Cache or any solution. Or you can try making thread in the WHT forum to take advice from others to possible solutions for the server crashes etc. Though I do not remember on top of my head but I can somewhat recommend this guys http://www.webhostingtalk.com/showthread.php?t=1041316 They have created Nginx plugins etc. and so must be having good knowledge of the same. I have never worked with them but seen a lot of positive reviews about them as well as their plugins and they seem to offer quite affordable rates. They are Indian too if I am correct and can recommend them though I have personally never used their work. But they have a lot of good reviews both in WHT as well as cpanel forums. So, I would advise them for sure if you need someone to work on you server etc. There are many other great server admins at WHT too though I would advise to check the history and reviews of that person or company before opting for them and providing them your server details. But if Ludh and Varun are server techies then maybe they would be able to do it themselves. The best part about Nginx is that I could handle bigger websites with lower server resource after installing Nginx and that was quite amazing. That is why I recommend them ever since I used them. If you just check the top Indian forums from big boards then you would realize that hardly any of them are using Apache. Some are using Nginx, some lighttpd and some Microsoft (with some cache configuration). Just check the live header of the websites and you would know. Nginx is better than both lighttpd and Microsoft in resource consumption and it has been proved time and again and it is light years ahead of Apache though some say that Apache can also compete after usage of Varnish Cache. With the type of traffic especially in a popular forum an alternative way to handle more traffic at less server resources is essential to stop server crashes. That is why all the top Indian sites and especially forums already use Nginx or Lighttpd etc. in order to handle the huge traffic they receive without the crashes. I would advise to try out Nginx especially or if needed Varnish Cache + Apache though you might discuss with Varun and Ludh about it.
