Used to love watching Anwar bat ,such a classy player .But Sehwag has reached such heights in test cricket as an opener that this comparison even though in ODI's looks absurd.

So both suck against the best odi team of their time. But Sehwag can do more damage to other remaining sides as he has better Strike rate. Anwar as opener average 1.7 more than Sehwag in ODI. But his SR is 22 less.

Fully agree. Just look at the nerve of that guy to compare a legend like Sehwag with a flat track bully Anwar! Sehwag Demoralizes the opposition ala SemiFinal where he took gul apart. Or 195 on the first day in Australia. And that inturn helps people coming down the order. Anwar failed to do this consistantly.

In Tests it's a No Contest. Sehwag is heads and shoulders above Anwar due to his penchant of scoring big runs at a fast pace all over the world. In odis they are comparable but would go for Sehwag due to the shock value he provides. To use your example, his attack on Gul in the semi final totally took Gul out of the equation and Gul was so fazed he was scored off even by Bhajji :hysterical: This is what Sehwag can do to you. Overall Sehwag way way ahead of Anwar.

He doesn't average 40 as opener and has a very poor strike rate. Anwar is good because he was Pakistani. In other countries he would have been dropped.

If Anwar would have played for India, he would have ranked below Sehwag. Because Pakistanis dont have that many classy batsmen, he is hyped to a ATG great which he is not. Anwar was a more elegant batsman while Sehwag has not textbook technique, has amazing hand eye coordination which makes him very destructive. Anwar basically performed a different role for Pakistan than what Sehwag does for India. A more apt comparison would be with Gautam Gambhir.

I think we need to stop comparing. These are useless debates. Nobody is going to get convinced either way. Statistics is a good tool but does not show the whole picture. What statistics miss is the impact a person makes on opponent as well as their team members. On numerous occasions I have seen Indian team in a different spirit when SRT is there as compared to when SRT is absent. He may not play a gem of an innings, he may get out for a duck but he still makes a difference on the psychs of his team members. I am pretty sure there might have been a time when Pakistan team looked up to Anwar for inspiration. As Indian team looks up to Sehwag or SRT. This just shows the importance of each person to their team. And I think we can discuss this instead of who was better. The above is my opinion and nothing more.
