Singh, who arrived earlier on a two-day visit to the Afghan capital, was given a ceremonial reception by the Afghan Police, the Army and the Air Force in the grand presidential palace 'The Arg'. "This is a tremendous honour for the Afghan people to welcome His Excellency Dr Manmohan Singh, Prime Minister of India, to second home Afghanistan," said Karzai, welcoming Singh. The Prime Minister, in turn, described India and Afghanistan as 'partners in progress'. "It is always a great honour and privilege to visit you. That you have invited me to visit is an honour to entire people of India. "India and Afghanistan are partners in progress and we will stand by you through thick and thin, and we reaffirm our solidarity with the people and government of Afghanistan," he told the Afghan president at the reception at the palace. The Afghan President also hosted a banquet in honour of the Prime Minister. The presidential palace, known as the 'The Arg', houses the president's office, his residence, and the office of the Afghan National Security Adviser. The presidential complex also houses the home of Afghanistan's last king Zahir Shah, where Prime Minister Singh is staying. Singh is the first foreign head of government for whom the late king Zahir Shah's home has been thrown open. Earlier Singh arrived here, accompanied by National Security Adviser Shivshankar Menon, Foreign Secretary Nirupama Rao, Prime Minister's special envoy to Afghanistan Satinder Lamba and other senior officials, on his first visit in six years. ganeshran Posted May 12, 2011 Posted May 12, 2011 Though both India and Pakistan have vested interests in engaging with Afghanistan, Pakistan's activities in the country have pushed it back into the middle ages. First it had the Soviet war, then the US sponsored Jihadis, then fanatic Taliban, and now the insurgency. Except the Soviet war, all of these events had active participation by Pakistan. India's engagement on the other hand has been more constructive and we have built bridges, roads, and even thier Parliament during Karzai's reign

We are not doing that for charity. Yes, the development work has generated a lot of good will for India but at the same time it serves another purpose as well. We have got some 15-16 consultaes opened in Afghan cities bordering Pakistan. Ab khud socho wo consultaes wahan kya karte honge :winky: Keeps the large hearted country occupied on its western borders and doesn't give it enough time to focus on the eastern border.

You have screwed up and destroyed their nation for the last 50 years and you are more worried about the home comment. Indians have helped not only Afghanistan but also Bangladesh. Those are not illegal immigrants like the Bangladeshis in India but they had to flee their nation because you have been screwing up their nation for the last 50 years. India has never screwed up Bangladesh and instead helped Afghanistan, Bangladesh or any other nation. Maybe we would have helped your nation too if you had not kept exporting terrorism and behaved like good humans and world citizens. But than brain, peace and Pakistan does not go hand in hand.

Homerus_Unus Posted May 12, 2011 Posted May 12, 2011 Afghanistan is a highly intolerant society, vis-a-vis religion and has been mired in tribalism, poverty, illiteracy, and strife, since well before the Soviets landed. They have a very long way to go to even have any semblance of a society, let alone institute democratic governance or religious tolerance. Our role in Afghanistan is to create strategic depth and secure our energy interests as a global economic giant, and it might require negotiating a settlement with the Taliban to enable "stability" in the country. Is PM Singh even remotely concerned about how Sikhs and Hindus are treated like Jews in Nazi Germany by the Taliban? Or is he concerned about how women are treated there? I think not. Sorry, if this story doesn't warm my milk jug. P.S. There's no way we can deal with 3 million of them in our lands, engaging in 'badal', 'jirgas' (as if our 'khaps' weren't enough), and other assorted dumbass-ery. Asim is right about this.

The Chinese just need a proxy against India the way they need North Korea against Japan. The Arabs prefer India to Pakistan US well im shocked if they are even letting these guys in the country if they are millionaire tourists while India is setting records in Visa to the country. Hardly news that Afghanistan loves India and despises Pakistan.
