The Dhoni & Tendulkar/Malinga swap thread got me thinking as to who would be the most valuable player so thought of checking what most of the folks think. If IPL were to hold a draft like they do in NFL or baseball and if you could take the first 5 picks who would you pick? In other words if you just bought/set up an IPL franchise and could pick ANY 5 players (including Pak players) whom would you pick? My top 5 picks would be... 1. Dhoni - Building block and face of my franchise whom I would build the team around. He's akin to Jeter and Tom Brady rolled into one and knows how to win  2. Malinga - The most lethal bowler in T20s. He can pick up wkts anytime - at the start of an innings, during the middle overs and at the death. He can bowl yorkers at will, has great slower ball & bouncer and not too many batsmen can take him on. 3. Gayle - He's one of the most destructive batsmen and in current form can't be ignored. 4. Afridi - Ideal player for a T20 if you have a captain who knows how to get the most out of his players. I suspect Dhoni would know how to make the most of his talent as a tight spinner during the middle overs who can give the ball a whack at the death. Quick 20s or 30s is all you need in T20s and Afridi is ideal for the job. 5. Can't think of an automatic choice for the 5th pick (most probably would trade it for more picks in later rounds :--D) and considered the following: Gambhir (for his never say die attitude, as a nice stand-in captain for Dhoni and the guy who generally stands up when the going gets tough in any format), Sehwag (a great match-winner in his own right and if he gets over his shoulder injury an amazing partner to Gayle), Gul (one of the best bowlers in T20 who can bowl yorkers at will. Malinga & Gul in tandem would be a nightmare for batsmen), Sangakkara (a stand-out batsman and a backup wk to boot), AB DeVilliers (a guy whom I rate very highly. Is an outstanding batsman in any format, can keep wkts and is an amazing fielder) What do you guys think and whom would you pick in your top 5?

i would rather have Yusuf Pathan or Pollard in place of Afridi.
Pollard hasn't shown anything against better bowling attacks and his bowling is fodder against better batsmen. Pathan hasn't done much either and is not a good enough bowler at the intl level. Afridi will most likely give you few quick runs and at least will be able to bowl his quota of 4 overs.

That's a bit of an understatement regarding Afridi. I know a lot of us here tend to make jokes bout the Pakistanis but credit should be given where it's due. I personaly don't like Afridi but heck he is a better player than both of them combined. Espacialy as a BOWLER.

He will be an addition to the team just as a bowler. While Pollard and Yusuf Pathan can be added as allrounders.Pollard was outstanding in the Champions T20 where good bowlers from around the world represent their teams, he won a match out of nowhere for T&T against NSW in a league game against a attack which consisted of Lee, Bollinger,S. Clark and Hauritz. http://www.espncricinfo.com/ci/engine/match/416938.html

i am not making jokes on Afridi, :nono:but in T20's, you will want to have all-rounders like pathan or polllard more than afridi who has turned into just a pure bowler these days.

Tendulkar would be the most valued player in any draft/auction. Anyone who does not think so is either kidding himself' date=' or has 0 business sense.[/quote'] This. The CSK fans don't want to see the reality :winky:

A draft is usually for young players/or other players entering for the first time to play in a specific tournament. So hypothetically you have to assume none of the above players you mentioned have played in the IPL, or else you might as well complete your selection and pick the other 6 for All-Stars IPL XI! Anyways to as per you request: Chubby Puddings Top Pick 1) Ryder 2) Kev O'Brien 3) Powar 4) Shane Warne 5) Bollinger "Pocket Dynamos" XI 1) Warner 2) Parthiv 3) Barath 4) Chawla *Case could be made for the Chubby puddings pick 5) Mo Amaer

Before World Cup it would have been Tendulkar by miles, but after World Cup Dhoni probably pips him. It would be interesting to know MI v/s CSK TV Ratings this season, I think that would settle the argument.

Once Tendulkar retires, yes Dhoni will be the most valuable player. Since Tendulkar is active in Intnl cricket, your post is a nice joke!

Since Tendulkar is active in Intnl cricket, your post is a nice joke![/quote'] The fact is Dhoni is more valuable cricketer than Sachin in T20s . Noone is arguing about tests here . Yes Sachin is a great batsman but there are plenty of opening Batsmen who can scoring similar to him in IPL. But Dhoni is not only an excellent batsmen and WK but also by far the finest captain . Having him in ur team as captain guarantees u success because of his amazing captaincy which u cant say about Sachin . Ultimately its winning that matters in cricket not how great a individual player u are . If u cant grasp this then its either poor cricketing sense or too much Sachin bias
