DaFan Posted May 26, 2011 Posted May 26, 2011 The IPL governing council is considering holding an additional qualifying stage for the 2011 Champions League T20 a few days before the main event, which would give a fourth IPL team a chance to play in it. "Fourth team may have the opportunity to play CLT20," Sundar Raman, the IPL chief executive, tweeted on May 22. "But they need to play a qualifier tournament a few days before CLT20 with 3 other teams." According to Raman's twitter feed, the tournament proper is scheduled to be held from September 23 to October 9 in India. The qualifying event - if it gets the green light - will have to be shoe-horned into the tightly packed international schedule, in the week following India's tour of England, that ends on September 16. When contacted by ESPNcricinfo, Raman did not confirm or deny there were plans for a qualifying tournament, saying in an email, "We will inform the media on the developments around CLT20 soon", but a member of the Champions League governing council told ESPNcricinfo that the tournament would be formally confirmed at the end of the governing council meeting in Chennai on Sunday. http://www.espncricinfo.com/indian-premier-league-2011/content/story/516588.html yeeaaa now the whole world would get to see SRK shaking his thang
urbestfriend Posted May 26, 2011 Posted May 26, 2011 Why one more qualifier tournament? Has BCCI gone mad or what?

yoda Posted May 26, 2011 Posted May 26, 2011 Expect this idea to get shelved now that MI made it to top 4. :winky:
Zap_Brannigan Posted May 26, 2011 Posted May 26, 2011 Why one more qualifier tournament? Has BCCI gone mad or what? The market demands it. CL is turning out to be a flop when compared with the IPL. It's well and good to have the intention of getting teams from SL,NZ and WI but when those market bring nothing to the table, it only drags the number of viewers that could have been. Even Aus, SA and England numbers haven't made much of a difference. It is an expensive tournament to run and if the numbers continue for the next years, there will be no buyer for this tournament at its asking price. The only other option is to reduce the cost for the moment and make it a smaller tournament but that would mean it will always be the ugly step sister of the IPL and may not have a brand value in the future.
Sidhoni Posted May 26, 2011 Posted May 26, 2011  why dont they organize IPL once again, and replace the bottom 2 with champions of aus and sa and call it the Champions League.
rajmarie Posted May 26, 2011 Posted May 26, 2011 I am not surprises that money hunger let it to be. Although IMO...4 IPL teams in CL is just too much. CL is good already
Rusty Posted May 26, 2011 Posted May 26, 2011 What was the point of this format then? Why would you put eliminators and qualifiers if you want to conduct a qualifying tournament? Rubbish decision if they took it. One more way to fill the coffers.. :ohyeah:
ViruRulez Posted May 26, 2011 Posted May 26, 2011 Money and SRK talks. :D They would not want to miss the huge Kolkota support in CL especially when it is taking place in India. A 80K jam packed Eden would bring huge revenues and the fans would be even more eager after their dismal ending in IPL. And they can utilize SRK for promotions and popularity of the league in India as well as abroad. Business tactics. :D

Draining our players when they have a tight international schedule already . Its bad enough to host IPL straight after the WC and now this.
