What a crap statement . Just winning tournaments on back of a strong team doesnt make anyone the Greatest Cricketer . A player also has to be an exceptional performer in an individual department to be the Greatest and not on his captaincy alone . Ponting and Imran for example have won as much as Dhoni has but they were exceptional performers as a Batsman and All-rounder . Take away Dhoni's captaincy from him and see how big he looks with his crap individual performances ' date= whats his performance in test Matches to be considered as the Greatest Indian Cricketer?

Imran Khan was one of the Greatest bowler of his time and also played quite a few handy knocks with the bat Ponting on the other hand has been the Best Batsman of 2000s and easily the third best Batsman of his era . Both the above mentioned Gentlemen have achieved a lot as a captain and have been exceptional performers in there individual department . Now if you take away Dhoni's captaincy then do you see anything special in what he has achieved as an individual especially in Test Matches ? Just banking on success on some of the other stars in the team doesnt make him the Greatest Indian Cricketer . In terms of player performance plus captaincy , Kapil easily triumphs Dhoni .

I think it would be safe to liken Dhoni to the Ricky Ponting's leadership from 2002 to say 2007/08. Both had great players and won all around the world. The problem began when the seniors retired. I will rate Kapil Dev as India's greatest player ever, be it as a leader of semi-ordinary men or as a player. From the modern era, in terms of pure leadership, I would rate Ganguly over MSD, for it is Ganguly who set the table on which Dhoni is having food today. In terms of simply individual talent, Sachin and Dravid are the greatest players of this generation of cricket.
