Why do we have to start Silly comparisons :wall:
What exactly do you expect on a cricket forum? Other than discussing an ongoing match the other prominent discussions generally are... 1. Who is better? Player A or Player B, or how great a certain player is 2. Which opponent player would you have in your team 3. Greatest World or India XI 4. Debating the squad selected for an upcoming tour and how the selectors messed up This thread is simply falls in category 1

uhmm Let's see....Kapil Dev won India the first WC and gave hope that even we can compete, Gavaskar showed us that India too can produce quality batsmen, Ganguly changed us from lambs abroad to a fighting unit and Sachin inspired a generation of cricketers like Sehwag and you think Dhoni is the most valuable Indian cricketer of all time???

Each greats brought their own flavor. 1983 inspired lot of youngsters. Tendulkar inspired lot of youngsters. Now Dhoni is inspiring a lot. But if you ask a South African commie .. they will all vote for Dhoni lol. They are having eternal orgasm over Dhoni's ability to "win crunch matches". They must have been tired of seeing SA choke time and again regardless of captain. So they really salute a captain who can pull off miracle time and again. Given a choice they will pack him and take him to SA.

He wouldn't even make the top 5 in tests. I'd have Zak (most valuable player for us now imo), Tendulkar, VVS, Sehwag and Gambhir before him. India winning test series in Aus/Eng is not enough. He needs to play like Gilly did to reach the level spoken about in this thread. Gilly made 200 in SA and hundreds in EVERY test country he played in. He averaged in the 50s for most of his career. He made runs against good attacks in tough situations. Compare that to Dhoni who has done nothing of real note in tests, esp outside the sub. In the last tour of Australia, he batted like a tailender. How many real innings of substance has he played against good attacks/tough pitches? If you're doing a thread on captaincy, Dhoni will compare with anyone. Player/Cap in tests-he has a long way to go. Of course, a lot of people don't follow tests. I had a friend's son tell me last month that Laxman was the worst batsmen he had seen in his life (circus league and ODI fan).

As a Captain, Dhoni is very, very valuable but he certainly needs to do a lot more with the bat in Test matches to be talked of in the same vein as players like Goddy, Kumble, Dravid, Ganguly etc.

If we strictly talk about ODIs he has saved India's as* both as captain and player numerous times. In one dayers he is definitely up there with Tendulkar in terms of value.

What I have learnt through my experience in various cricket forums is that Dhoni is respected far more outside by some neutral fans than by our very own Indian fans.Good for some of these non sense fans ,they will get to know his value once he retires or gives up captaincy.I still feel this man still doesnt get as much credit as he deserves rather he gets more flak by our very own cricket fans.

He just hands over the trophy to some young guy and disappears into background.

Because, the word Valuable is a very vague one. There are no hard facts that can you debate on. Without facts, people argue based on opinion. And you cannot have a definitive debate based on opinion alone. You can compare Player A and Player B on the basis of any particular skill (i.e. batting, bowling keeping etc) but starting a thread on the lines of "Greatest, Valuable" etc can only result in a flame war, not a debate.

Goddy hardly plays ODIs so Dhoni is now considered better than him in ODIs currently. In Tests he has just started his journey and has a loooong way to go

yeah ODIs too sir, sachin has 21 yrs, 18K runs, best ODI batter, most MoM ODI awards(??), carried the team single-handedly in the 90's. Got to have longevity as the deciding factor here. But that said: Dhoni's 6 yrs since his debut > Sachin's 10 yrs .

I meant both in Odis as well as in Test matches. YOu will realize this when sachin retires. There will be next to none impact on ODI w\l ratio and slight only short term impact on test w\l ratio, major reason being: dhoni is around....
