Indian Pride Posted June 30, 2011 Posted June 30, 2011 Hmm.. With this being confirmed the only point to ponder is whether it was deliberate or not. Now I'm no video editing expert but I would presume that there would be 2 or more streams of the live feed. When an instant replay is requested, one of those streams would be rewound back a few moments to review the incident. That would then be shown to the 3rd umpire and the viewers. My question would be, which delivery was actually shown to the 3rd umpire? The operative could have, in the heat of the moment rewound the tape too far and showed the delivery before (for a senior operative to do this is in itself strange but hey, sh|t happens!), and not realised till it was too late. If they can confirm which delivery was shown then this can all be put to bed as a genuine mistake. But, if the delivery shown, was from deliveries much further back, or even from another over then I would suspect foul play, and that would leave a real sour taste for the rest of this series.

Two top batsman were removed in a short period due to absolute umpiring howlers. Considering the nature of the pitch, every wicket (more so for the specialist batsmen) was crucial. Poor stuff from umpires, bordering on bias cheating.

Going through the article will tell you that it could be a genuine mistake....the amount of work these guys do is just amazing. http://www.espncricinfo.com/magazine/content/story/511365.html I think it is an honest mistake by the producer. However, this is something that can be potentially abused. The biggest problem for UDRS is the dependence on the broadcaster and I don't know if ICC has any legal ways to ensure these buggers don't fool around. For a broadcaster TRP is the only thing that matters and unless the ICC binds them legally / covers the legalities which ensure broadcasters' honesty and integrity in enabling UDRS, it is a huge gamble. Right now, if I was Dawood, I'd be having the cell numbers of all the production managers on speed dial to fix the next match.

And if you consider the fact WI batsmen have generally gotten the benefit of doubt you will have to say Indian performance has been quite impressive. Despite being on the wrong end of most of umpire decisions Indian A team has got the better of WI. If the decisions had gone both ways or if correct decision had been made this series would have been India all the way.

Nevertheless, the standard of umpiring has been absolutely pathetic in this series. In this case, I hope it doesn't detract too much from Dhoni's very silly shot. His last two dismissals may have been no-balls but they were ridiculous shots to play given the circumstances and in no way what you'd expect from a captain.
