Prakat Posted June 30, 2011 Posted June 30, 2011 Sonalika Group will supply 600 diesel engines a month to General Motors Co.'s (GM) local unit for the Chevrolet Tavera multi-utility vehicle, an executive at the unlisted Indian company said Wednesday. "We will start supplying the 2.0-liter engines from October onward," Akshay Sangwan, head of corporate planning and strategy at Sonalika Group, told Dow Jones Newswires by phone. Sourcing engines from Sonalika will help GM India in restarting sales of the Tavera in the country's 13 biggest cities where it stopped selling the model from April last year after the federal government adopted newer and more stringent emission standards equivalent to Euro IV rules. These 13 cities, including New Delhi and Mumbai, contribute significantly to car and utility vehicle sales in India because of higher per capita incomes. GM India sells the Tavera outside of these 13 cities with Euro-III diesel engines sourced from Indian auto-parts maker Avtec Ltd. Overall sales of utility vehicles in India rose 6% from a year earlier in the April-May period to 53,312 units. GM India sold 3,675 Taveras in April and May, up 25% from a year earlier. Sangwan also said the order from GM India is currently valued at INR100 million a month, which will increase in the future. P. Ltd., wasn't available for comment. :haha: Sangwan said Sonalika Group expects to supply up to 1,600 engines a month to GM India in two years' time on expectations that the new emission rules will be implemented across India. Sonalika Group controls International Tractors Ltd., the country's third-biggest tractor maker by sales, and International Cars and Motor Ltd., which makes multi-utility vehicle Rhino. When contacted, General Motors India V-P P Balendran said: "We are in discussion with 3-4 vendors for sourcing Tavera's engine. As soon as anything gets finalised, we will announce." Sonalika Group chairman L D Mittal declined to comment. The deal was finalized with Sonalika this week and supply will start soon.
