Samina Shaikh (19) and Zarina Shaikh (18), who study at St Xavier’s College and the Maharashtra College, moved the court for police protection after they were "terrorised and threatened". The sisters allege their neighbour Mohammad Ali Nisar Ansari assaulted their parents and brother on May 11. Ansari allegedly asked the sisters’ father Yasheen Sheikh not to send them to college. Ansari and other men in their locality believe that "only girls with bad character go to college" and did not want sisters to study after school. The family was told that Islam does not “permit†girls to study. “They threatened me and abused my family. They beat up my father and brother so badly that there was blood all over the floor,†says Samina. Samina alleges Nagpada police station officials refused to accept her complaint, the petition said. The threats and the assault have not scared Yasheen Sheikh. “This is the age of computers, we couldn't study but at least we are giving our children a chance to study,†he says. When the petition came up before a division bench of Justices Ranjana Desai and D B Bhosale, the public prosecutor told the court that Ansari had was released on bail after arrest. The girls allege that the police are not serious about ensuring their safety and want their case to be transferred to another station. Mumbai Police Commissioner D N Jadhav told CNN-IBN that he would look into the matter. It's not that simple when it involves some clown thumping holy-book to justify his action. Why do u think police officer initially refused to file an FIR.
