Jonty on Sri Lanka shortlist June 25 2007 at 04:29AM Colombo - Sri Lanka have shortlisted South African Jonty Rhodes and Australia's Greg Blewett to assist newly appointed head coach Trevor Bayliss, an official said on Sunday. The search for an assistant coach arose after former Sri Lankan fast bowler Rumesh Ratnayake turned down a Sri Lanka Cricket (SLC) offer last week citing personal reasons. "We were looking to Rumesh with an eye to the future, but now that he is unavailable, we have to weigh our options," SLC spokesperson Samantha Algama said. "Rhodes and Blewett will be approached because we want someone whose speciality is fielding." Rhodes, 37, was regarded as one of the world's best fielders during his 11-year career that ended in 2003 after 52 Tests and 245 one-day Internationals. Blewett, 35, played 46 Tests and 32 one-dayers for Australia from 1995 to 2000 before retiring from first-class cricket in May. Australian Tom Moody coached Sri Lanka to the World Cup final in the Caribbean before quitting to return home to Western Australia. Trevor Penney, who served as Moody's assistant for the last two years, will also join Western Australia after Sri Lanka's Test and one-day series against Bangladesh starting on Monday. Bayliss, the New South Wales coach who was selected as Moody's replacement, will take over the coaching duties of the Sri Lankan team only in August. - Sapa-AFP Link to comment
King
They are going the other way Sri Lanka. A low profile head coach and a high profile assistant coach. Jonty will be good for Sri Lanka. He has done excellent job with the current Saffie team as for fielding is concerned. Link to comment
