Jayasuriya at âll Stars team Hong Kong Sixes 2011

Sanath Jayasuriya will represent an All Star team, along with Shahid Afridi, Herschelle Gibbs, Abdul Razzaq, Shaun Tait and Ryan ten Doeschate at this year's Hong Kong Cricket Sixes. "We are thrilled to have both Sanath Jayasuriya and Shahid Afridi playing on the same team," Shahazada Saleem, president of the Hong Kong Cricket Association said in a statement today. "They are outstanding cricketers, who can demolish any bowling attack, and are more than capable bowlers themselves. Fans are in for a treat." Jayasuriya and Afridi have gone head-to-head with their batting exploits, and are recognised as two of the most destructive batsmen in the world. The duo are ideally suited to the tournamentÃÔ unique format, with hitting sixes almost second nature for the pair. The veteran Sri Lankan batsman held the record for the most sixes in one-day internationals 270 until Shahid Afridi, nicknamed Å£oom Boom for his aggressive batting style, overhauled it to stand top of the list with 289. He currently holds the record for the fastest 50 in One Day Internationals - off just 17 balls - and has claimed 323 wickets. He is the only player to score more than 13,000 runs and take more than 300 wickets in ODIs. The picturesque Kowloon Cricket Club will be tailor-made for the duo, who will carry the hopes of the All Stars in the expanded 12-team tournament. In keeping with the Hong Kong Cricket AssociationÃÔ goal to promote cricketÃÔ associate nations, the Netherlands Ryan ten Doeschate will feature in the All Stars team. Every English fan will remember ten Doeschate for the century he scored against England at this yearÃÔ World Cup. His knock of 119 is the record for the highest individual score by a player from an associate nation. The Netherlands all-rounder was recently named the ICC Associate and Affiliate Player of the Year for the third time in four years and for the second year running. Ÿe have got a good blend of players from all around the world and I expect the All Stars to be one of the favourites to win the tournament, said Saleem. The All Stars have been drawn with Sri Lanka, New Zealand and Scotland in Pool A. Defending champions Australia are in Pool B with England, Bangladesh and Ireland, while Pool C comprises last yearÃÔ losing finalists Pakistan, South Africa, India and Hong Kong. The All Stars will also feature in a unique exhibition game on Friday afternoon (October 28) as they take on a team made up of players selected from the remaining tournament field in Hong KongÃÔ first ever international T20 match. The T20 match kicks off immediately after the conclusion of Cricket Sixes pool play on Friday at 3.00pm. With the support of the Hong Kong Tourism CommissionÃÔ Mega Events Fund, the Karp Group Cricket Sixes 2011 is set to be the biggest and best tournament in the 19-year history of the Tournament. It is also recognised as an "M" Mark event by the Major Sports Events Committee. In a bid to share the excitement of Cricket Sixes with more members of the local community, a concession ticket is being sold for Friday, October 28. Friday tickets, which include the opening pool rounds and T20 action, are priced at HK$100 for adults and HK$50 for children 12 and under. Adult tickets are priced at HK$800 for a weekend (Saturday and Sunday) package, while childrenÃÔ tickets are HK$380.

Ireland name squad for Hong Kong Sixes Cricket Ireland today announced their squad which will feature in the Hong Kong Sixes next month (October 28-30) at Kowloon Cricket Club. There is one new face in the set-up, with 25 year old Max Sorensen from The Hills getting his opportunity to showcase his talents at the international event. The South African born all-rounder is currently employed as the Cricket Development Officer at The Hills Cricket Club in Leinster, having joined the club as their overseas player in 2007. Sorensen is delighted to be given the opportunity to play for Ireland, saying: "To be honest I was a little astounded to be given the call by Phil Simmons, but I'm determined to give it my best shot. I've trained with the squad a few times, and they're an awesome bunch of guys to be around. There's serious talent in Irish cricket, but I'm hopeful that I can prove that I can bring something extra to the squad. "I feel my brand of cricket is suited to this type of fast action, and with the T20 World Cup Qualifiers and also of course the ICC One-Day league leading to the World Cup, I'm aware there are serious opportunities ahead. It's a great honour to get the chance to play for Ireland, and I'm determined not to let this wonderful chance slip. My motto is 'Go big or go home', and I've no intention of going home." Sorensen came to Irish cricket in 2007 following two seasons in the Kent league. He has played at Under 19 level for Gauteng, but missed out on selection for the South African Under 19 World Cup squad. Ireland coach Phil Simmons had no fears about putting the inexperienced Sorensen into the line up for the international event: "We'd have liked to have given him a run out in the Development squad this summer, but ran into visa issues, which have now been sorted out. He's getting married to an Irish girl, and has been here over four years now, so he can also play in ICC tournaments. It's a perfect platform for us to get a look at Max, and see how he makes the step up. From what I've seen, he's exactly the type of cricketer I'm looking for. He can bowl quick, hits the ball far, and is an exceptional fielder, who is supremely fit." There are few surprises in the rest of the squad, with all-rounders predominant. Kevin O'Brien captains the side, with his brother Niall named as wicket-keeper. Paul Stirling, Alex Cusack, George Dockrell and John Mooney complete the line-up. Ireland have been drawn in Pool B along with Australia, Bangladesh and England with the exact order of fixtures still be announced by the organisers. SA Hong Kong squad named

Cricket South Africa (CSA) on Friday named the South African squad to take part in the annual Hong Kong Sixes’ tournament. The tournament takes place at the Kowloon Cricket Club from October 28-30. “We have followed the standard procedure of getting each franchise to nominate a player so that we do not disadvantage franchises from their domestic competition requirements,” commented CSA selection convener Andrew Hudson. “This is a very important tournament for players who have been identified as having the potential to represent the Proteas. Oram to captain NZ for Hong Kong Sixes

Hard-hitting all-rounder Jacob Oram has been named as captain of the New Zealand squad to compete in the Hong Kong Cricket Sixes next month. New Zealand are in a pool alongside Sri Lanka, Scotland and the top-seeded All Stars for the the 12-team, six-a-side tournament at Kowloon Cricket Club. The New Zealand team is made up of Oram, Nathan McCullum, James Franklin, Luke Woodcock, Rob Nicol, Kieran Noema-Barnett and Derek de Boorder. Oram said the squad was going into the tournament with high hopes of winning. "A number of players have international experience but we also have a couple of young guys who will be representing their country for the first time. "As shown in the HRV Cup, Kieran Noema-Barnett is one of the most destructive batsmen in the country so this format will certainly suit him. Derek de Boorder is a talented keeper who has the speed and agility needed to for this challenging format. "The rest of the line up are good all-rounders and I'm confident we have the squad to win the tournament.'' The three day tournament begins on October 28.

Wallace surprise pick for Scotland in Hong Kong Sixes

FORFARSHIRE gloveman Craig Wallace was last night named in the Saltires squad for next month’s Hong Kong Sixes. The youngster, who only made his top flight debut last month, is the surprise pick for Scotland’s inaugural appearance at the glamour event. Contracted stars Richie Berrington, Gordon Goudie, Majid Haq and Preston Mommsen will spearhead the campaign along with ex-Warwickshire star Calum MacLeod and Dunfermline’s Safyaan Sharif. Scotland were last week drawn with an International All-Stars Select, Sri Lanka, and New Zealand. The tournament takes place at the Kowloon Cricket Club from 28-30 October.
