It's the ultimate reward in ODI cricket, there's no incentive to be ranked the no.1 ODI team. It also doesn't make sense to see the current world champion being ranked 3rd or 4th just 6 months after the triumph. Any of the top 5 or 6 teams can beat each other on a given day in T20 so a ranking system is pointless, especially because the world T20 is held every 2 years (sometimes every year like in 2009-2010 which was an absolute joke). Instead of rankings for different formats I think they should just have 1 ranking system which rates teams based on how they good they are in Cricket overall (across all formats) and give the number 1 team some kind of trophy/mace they currently give the best test team. That way, all formats will matter equally. I'm sick and tired of whinging England supporters claiming ODI cricket doesn't matter just because they suck at it and we would also get a good idea of which team is the best cricket team overall.

IPL and domestic T20 is fine it gives youngsters some exposures and gives the fans some excitement but it is not a serious demonstration or test of ability and should not be treated as such!

Didn't India briefly jump to no.1 after the world cup win? I swear I heard a commentator say that after the match.

While I do feel that winning the World Cup is and should be considered more prestigious than being ranked number 1 in the world, the two should be seperate as the ranking rewards consistency! Novak Djokovic is the world number 1 in tennis and fair enough he won 3 of the 4 Grand Slams this year but he did not win the French Open even though that is one of the 4 major events of the year Nadal winning that doesnt make Nadal the number 1 And on the flip side! Nadal until last week could still have finished the year ranked number 1 in the world! Rankings are and should be about long term consitency the majors and the world cups are about which great player and great team steps up over a short period of time

Given how competitive teams are in t20, there'll be much more interest in rankings. I doubt any team would be able to stay at top for a long time. About time ICC started to take T20 seriously, they should get rid of these 1 match series as well, its nothing but a joke. min 2 - max 3 imo would be much better. We get to play what 3-4 t20 only ahead of next year's world t20, which in no way will help us to build a team for World T20.
