Jersey #10 Posted November 25, 2011 Posted November 25, 2011 Yeah' date=' what a dumb criteria to measure an innings greatness by how others did on the same pitch. Must be dumb because lo behold nothing from Tendulkar qualifies to the same level as Laxman's 96.[/quote'] That makes zero sense. Who says two or more people can not have a good knock on a bad pitch in the same match? That would just mean that all the contenders were in full flow dispite the bad pitch to bat on. On the occasion of 96, coinsidently no one else was in full flow while Laxman was. That alone does not qualify Laxman as an overall better player than Sachin or anyone else for that matter. Making up your rules to make sure that the conterpart wouldn't match up is lame.

I dont think Outy was claiming that. The point of contention in this thread is whether the 96 was better than 136.

That's exactly what he was claiming, probably not directly but he sure was making the same point How can you compare the two? just because no one else rose up to the occasion on the day Laxman made 96, doesn't make it out and out the "best knock ever".

zen Posted November 25, 2011 Posted November 25, 2011 this. Maybe Lara can play longer innings, Laxman may (or may not :--D) be better in 4th innings, Viv Richards may have been more attacking, Ponting may have scored more in matches won and some other batsmen may (or may not) be better than him in some other dimensions of the game but when you talk about a complete package as a batsman then there is one and only one guy - Goddy. If that floats your boat .... but, in tests, in many cases, you need specialists. So a complete package theory doesn't work always .... For example, when I am picking the first batsman for my team, I would be more focused on someone who can bat in the top 3, get big 100s, etc, which is why someone who can bat in the top 3 usually gets my vote .... I could see a Viv or a Lara being successful batting in the top 3, not the little master comparitively and he has shown his reluctance to bat at those positions It's like Javad vs Gavaskar to some extent. Javad is a more complete package, superb both in tests and odis w/ a better avg. But if you are picking one for tests, it's Gavaskar. In ODIs, I could be better off w/ the complete package though
carnish Posted November 25, 2011 Posted November 25, 2011 the thread was started for me and since i decided that i dont want to argue or check who is better between laxman and sachu... others take over... i mean what is it... everyone just wants comparisions.. and vijayji about selective memory i agree i have a selective memory.... thanks for reminding me..:--D

zen Posted November 25, 2011 Posted November 25, 2011 btw, what I had said was that there are some folks opposing to using "filters", but they are the first ones to use them when they want to show 56>100, as w/o filters you can't do that :P But we are used to such statements :giggle:
zen Posted November 25, 2011 Posted November 25, 2011 your post has been "filtered out". By some SRT fanatic mod PS I suspect it is the badam eater

pensionplan Posted November 25, 2011 Posted November 25, 2011 That innings was class from Lax but I'll rate Rahul's twin 50s at Kingston in 2006 slightly above this one. I don't have any problem in saying that Lax is a slightly better second innings player than Sachin but what I find incredulous is the argument that Lax is miles ahead of Sachin. Sachin has had some great innings in the second dig too, some of them have saved games, some have won, some have been lost causes. Same case with Lax, Sunny, and Rahul as well.I do not think he is slightly better IMO to me decidedly better than SRT or for that matter other batsman too based on the fact he has the knack of coming up with these gems in difficult conditions and team ended up winning. Here are some other of VVS's 2nd inning(3rd or 4th match innings) heroics which helped India win close games outside of Eden 281 and Durban 96. Mohali 73* vs Aus Port of Spain 74 vs WI Perth 79 vs Aus Colombo 103* vs SL Johhanesburg 73 vs SA Mumbai 69 vs Aus. Chennai 66 vs Aus It will be very tough to come up with such a list for any of the batsman in team wins like the ones VVS had in recent memory. Instead of making it a comparison between players why can't we accept that VVS has been the best man to perform under crisis in which we won close games.
Jersey #10 Posted November 25, 2011 Posted November 25, 2011 unfortunately' date=' you can't use that for your hero :P[/quote'] b/c it's meant for the zero :haha:

This Sachin has always made worthful contributions though, can't forget that. :icflove:
zen Posted November 25, 2011 Posted November 25, 2011 b/c it's meant for the zero :haha: which is why your hero struggles in debates .... Anything multiplied by zero gets turned into a zero, therefore when you put your hero against a zero, the hero becomes a zero and zero a hero :hysterical: the power of zero :P
