akshayxyz Posted December 14, 2011 Posted December 14, 2011 Anyone sold items via ebay/quikr/olx kind of reselling/auction websites.? I just put one of my old laptop for sale, and received two suspiciously identical requests - along the lines - "I am interested in buying, I want it to be shipped abroad, I will pay for the overseas shipment." One of them was like, I want to gift it to my son, I am in so and so place, my son is in Ghana, but now he is in **Nigeria** (), can you arrange to ship it to Nigeria. I am fairly certain that, there is some foulplay / trolling intended here, but not able to figure out how s/he plans to 'gain' from here.
punjabi_khota Posted December 14, 2011 Posted December 14, 2011 Well in US usually (over Craigslist), the scam involves payment by cheque. They give you a cheque of even more money than you ask, it clears at first and they ask you to return the difference to them. Later on, the bank knocks on your door because the cheque was bad (which apparently takes some time to find out). Not sure how it will work if ebay transaction is involved.
akshayxyz Posted December 14, 2011 Author Posted December 14, 2011 Thanks. Cheque, Money orders and other similar 'deferred mode of payments' I have already ruled out from accepting. I am thinking to play along and ask him to transfer to paypal - what do you say?
akshayxyz Posted December 14, 2011 Author Posted December 14, 2011 btw, its not ebay, some desi website - which does not have ebay kind of fraud prevention mechanisms in place. The website is not even bothered about its commission, and let the buyer contact me directly!!
Rajiv Posted December 14, 2011 Posted December 14, 2011 Sold iPhone and few items via Craigslist. Folks come over to pick it up, never had an issue but looking at ur situation, I wouldnt trust the desi site
ganeshran Posted December 14, 2011 Posted December 14, 2011 i usually sell stuff through the company's internal classified portal of mine or friend's companies. Much less chance of fraud.
Nova Posted December 14, 2011 Posted December 14, 2011 Sold and bought lot of things on ebay. Just ship the product after payment clears...and keep an option for insurance. Paypal protects sellers also. https://cms.paypal.com/us/cgi-bin/?cmd=_render-content&content_ID=security/seller_protection
akshayxyz Posted December 14, 2011 Author Posted December 14, 2011 i usually sell stuff through the company's internal classified portal of mine or friend's companies. Much less chance of fraud. yes, that is the best option.. I have been a bit lazy to put up ads in known circle, for the reason that buyer might trouble me for small issues. And ended up accumulating lot of electronic items and books.. now in the mode to clean up...and bloody shopkeepers offering pennies even for items in good shape. Sold and bought lot of things on ebay. Just ship the product after payment clears...and keep an option for insurance. Paypal protects sellers also. https://cms.paypal.com/us/cgi-bin/?cmd=_render-content&content_ID=security/seller_protection thanks.. yet to get a decent bid from ebay, this particular one was from quikr. lets see.
akshayxyz Posted December 14, 2011 Author Posted December 14, 2011 relevant FYI for whoever is interested. http://www.craigslist.org/about/scams
