Trott is a rubbish player to watch. I'd rather watch paint dry. Ian Bell is bloody awesome. He has a classical technique and can dominate the bowling. That is very rare.

I've noticed since the early 00's that there seems to be a geuine lack of stroke players in world cricket today. The best batsman in the world right now are the likes of Trott, Tendulkar, Sangakarra, none of which are real elegant players, though Sachin may have a slight claim to that. Right now, the only two in test cricket who are real stroke players who play with elegance, flair and creativity are VVS Laxman and Ian Bell. Everyone else who are top quality in test cricket are grafters or players who are sort of restrained. In the ICC top 10, only Ian Bell and Sachin (to an extent) are players who have real flair, creativity and elegance. Are we seeing a shift from freeflowing batting to grafting with the likes of Cook, Dravid, Trott, Smith, Amla, Younis Khan, Kallis, Sangakarra etc?

I think you're overrating Rohit a little here. He's completely untested at international level at this point and scoring buckets of runs in the Indian league doesn't really tell that much. Out of the up coming talents, Umar Akmal and Eoin Morgan seem to be both really elegant and talented.

You are confusing natural strokemakers with batting elegance. Both Akmal and Morgan are effective and have a wide array of shots - but their shots are not elegant inspite of the good timing. Elegance is what I would call a Lara/Darren Bravo cover drive, or a VVS flick, or a SRT backfoot punch among others.

That again makes me think how similar Darren Bravo is to Brian Lara. I can see Bravo playing all the shots (maybe not all) Lara played with similar elegance. I am very excited to see what's next for this guy.

We will see even less now with the onset of tontee tontee. Players will be trained from a young age to whack the ball as far as they can, and to get in the gym and bulk up to get even more power. Caressing the ball elegantly through the covers will soon be extinct and will only be available to view on video of some of the past greats.

11 Afridi's chucking the ball, eating the ball, dancing on the pitch, hitting the ball with eyes closed on the on side to get a six on the off side. In that case we can have a reality show of when one gets retired and then un-retires himself. All the emotions, struggle behind it.
