Don't they count deliveries while they bat? (We would count deliveries during gully cricket also). He should have told the umpire that one ball is yet to be bowled. I understand Gambhir is Class 5 fail so he cannot count, but is Dhoni on the same boat too? Can't count, angootha-chhap types?
