US special forces are present in five South Asian countries, including India, a top Pentagon commander has revealed. US Pacific Commander Admiral Robert Willard said the teams were deployed to help India with their counter-terrorism co-operation. The US and India were working together to contain Lashkar-e-Taiba, a Pakistan-based militant group blamed for the 2008 Mumbai attacks, he said. The US embassy in Delhi clarified that the troops were not stationed in India. A spokesman told the BBC that there were "no special forces stationed in India", as media reports had suggested. The embassy and India's ministry of defence said a unit from the US 25th infantry division was in India to hold an exercise with Indian forces. 'Working closely' Adm Willard said US teams were also present in Nepal, Bangladesh, Sri Lanka and Maldives. "We have currently special forces assist teams - Pacific assist teams is the term - laid down in Nepal, Bangladesh, Sri Lanka, Maldives, as well as India," Adm Willard told a Congressional hearing. "We are working very closely with India with regard to their counter-terrorism capabilities and in particular on the maritime domain but also government to government, not necessarily department of defence but other agencies assisting them in terms of their internal counter-terror and counterinsurgency challenges." Adm Willard said Lashkar-e-Taiba was a "very dangerous organisation... so it is a very important threat, and we're working very closely with the nations in the region to help contain it". He said the group was "responsible for many attacks in India, including the horrific attacks into Mumbai, Lashkar-e-Taiba is headquartered in Pakistan, affiliated with al-Qaeda... and contributes to terrorist operations in Afghanistan and aspires to operate against Asia, Europe and North America," he said. In the past months, the US has trained Indian counter-terrorist specialists. The two countries have also been working to counter piracy, conduct disaster response planning and training and holding joint armed forces exercises. In July last year, Robert Blake, US assistant secretary for South and Central Asian Affairs, said counter-terrorism co-operation with India was "a very high priority" for the US. He said Washington was working with Delhi to ensure that "they have the best systems in place possible to prevent future attacks such as the one in Mumbai".

That is very believable as long as it is just for an exercise, else doesn't make much sense - we are not actively engaged in the WoT by definition from our soil .. and none in Pakistan ? :haha:

Its obviously part of a exchange/training program, India has no idea when it comes to intelligence gathering and security. We need all the help we can get and the US/Israel are world leaders.

You are confusing between the CIA and the Special forces.. the former is the one that does all the security gathering and espionage, noone's going to reveal the locations where they operate (hint: all the US embassies) .. the special forces are the foot soldiers who carry out the assasinations and sabotage, I see no reason for them to be in India.

So our Special/Forces should get help/training from others? We need out Special Forces to be the best they can be, we cannot improve or get better if we don;t learn or get help from other nations. India has a massive inferiority complex, need to get those chips off our shoulders, look at Mumbai 2008 and what happened it was embarrassing watching our police, swat teams taking on these scum with guns from WW1.

Our special forces are quite good actually - the Marcos and the army special forces. Don't need 'training' from anyone, maybe a joint exercise. Mumbai 2008 became an army operation because our police force was/is just rubbish in terms of fitness and equipment. Don't confuse special forces with the police force.

Our special forces were not involved in Mumbai operation yar. :WTF: We have one of the best special forces in the world, infact in the world's top 10 special forces, if not in top 5. IMO, UK SAS is the world's best special force(i m just guessing on the basis of all the information that I have got so far)

Even if the NSG etc are among the best in the world it does not mean we cant learn and improve from others and with other countries help. For example the way the USA took out Bin Laden was stunning and awesome, showed the world why they are the best in the world. India could never do something like that.

That is why we have joint exercises, to learn from each other. We send our top special force operatives to the US navy seals school , they too rotate some of their green beret and seals though our counter insurgency and jungle warfare school in the north east widely regarded as the best in its class in the world. But that can't be termed as 'being stationed in a country' . There was nothing rambo-esque about the Osama op.. was a routine storming of a building. You are again mixing up facts, what was special there was the political will to take the risk and push the Pak bluff that they would retaliate. In our case, such an operation would 100% blow up into a full scale war = there is so much more to lose.

You moron, no one else can do what USA did! No one else! They either had a stealth heli which was a first in itself for being impervious to radar or their commanders had warned the Pakis in advance so that no defensive measures was launched by the Pakis. Speaking of Pakis, they were not afraid to bring down multiple USSR aircraft in the 80s. So yeah, they could take on a superpower other than the US and risk retaliation but not USA itself. Get it, dumbass ?

MARCOS were involved in Mumbai They combined with the NSG for the hotel storming
Hey bro, yea you r right. May be I was misinformed somewhere. i will have to go through the internet to revise all the information once again.

Its u & ur kind who has an inferiority complex, pretending to be an Indian so as to obtain a free license to spew garbage here. Not the first time its happened though, it happens in real life as well: http://www.reuters.com/article/2010/05/07/us-timessquare-backlash-idUSTRE64655Y20100507

Let me tell you brah, it took 10 yrs for USA to get its most-wanted target. Still you are praising them like if they have come down from heaven. Apart from taking 10 yrs, there were some factors as well which helped USA to complete the operation Osama-Bin-Laden like they did e.g. their involvement in Pakistan and Afghanistan for so many years, and complacency of Pakistani intelligence. About your last point, that India could never do something like this- I don't agree with this too. You should never question the capabilities of your men. Till the time you give some operation and if they fail in that operation, then you can definitely blame their capabilities but not before.

If you blame India for all this, what would you say about Russian 2002 Nordost Siege where due to Russian army mistake some 130 hostages were killed. Any country can send special trained individuals who are somewhat equal to suicide bombers, to some other country to kill civilians. Not a big deal. But the aftermath of such incidents definitely affects the relationships of many countries.

Iran Hostage Crisis, Battle of Mogadishu, Somalia, Failed rescue of Linda Norgrove, etc. I seriously doubt when Indian Army Chief General V K Singh claimed "I would like to say only this that if such a chance comes, then all the three arms (of the Indian Defense Forces) are competent to do this" was making any false assertions. Indian Defence Forces is more than capable of this, and have been doing this over last 200 years. But the aftermath of such raid has bigger more important political fallouts.

Reporters probably missheard/misinterpreted what the pentagon official said. There probably is presence of us intelligence officials working in conjunction with their indian counterparts not spec ops. And if spec ops are present, their duties would be limited to defending US embassies. Idea that they are training Indian forces is laughable. On the contrary, many foreign forces come to train with Indian forces and learn from of their experiences in Kashmir and North East. Rashtriya Rifles rivals any COIN force in the world.
