Waugh better than Sachin: Gavaskar

Sydney, June 24 Former Indian master batsman Sunil Gavaskar rates Australia captain Steve Waugh as a better batsman in modern Test cricket than India’s Sachin Tendulkar. Writing a syndicated column in Australian newspapers today, Gavaskar said that Waugh was superior because of his ability to deliver the goods for his team in tight situations.

Gavaskar criticised Tendulkar for throwing away his wicket during the second Test won by Zimbabwe in Harare last week, when the hosts squared the two-match series with a four-wicket victory. Tendulkar, on 69, carved a widish delivery to point to trigger an India collapse on the fourth day. The tourists slipped from the comfortable platform of 197 for three to 234 all out, leaving Zimbabwe with a modest victory target of 157. “It’s time to listen to the Australians, who rate their captain as the best Test batsman in the world for his ability to either win or save matches for his team outside his home environs,” Gavaskar wrote. “It was the batting that let the team (India) down. When batsmen who are set, (who) have done all the hard work, throw their wickets away to loose shots, then the team is never going to put enough runs on the board.” “Why blame VVS Laxman when the best batsman in the universe (Tendulkar) gets a half-century and then gets out, when a big score from him is the crying need of the team.’’ Reuters

I guess Gavaskar didn't deny Tendulkar is the best as he does say Tendulkar is the best batsman in the universe but he mentions Steve Waugh has better ability to either win or save matches for his team outside his home environs. I think Tendulkar as for batting aesthetic or batting technique is the best ever but not as effective as other top batters when it comes to chipping in when in crunch more often. It'll be stupid to say he hasn't done well at all at all times when chips are down but he has fewer instances when he has turned a game upside down on his own.

I believe Tendulkar has been the best player India and probably the world has produced in the last couple of decades. He has inspired cricket fans all over the world with his skill and flair, making him a legend among the current batch of players.. However, I do believe he has lost his form in the past few years, probably due to injures, age and building pressure.. The likes of Ricky Ponting and Kevin Peiterson have taken away the mantle of being the best in the business and thats what bothers us (the Indian fans) the most.. I honestly believe the man has still a lot to give to the game and it would be a shame for him to retire when every1s ready to bash him.. He's a legend of our times and I hope he can have a Hero's exit with the Indian team ruling the roost.

It is Sachins fault that the bowlers presented him with a measly 359 to win .... while he pretty much took us single handedly into the finals by the scruff of the neck ... pffft No one else has drawn against AUS in Aus and retained the Trophy .... Gangs did receive the BG trophy at SCG didnt he ? And of the 7 tests that India won against Aus since the mid 90s SRT had a huge part to play in atleast 3 of them.

If only the Indian bowlers had done well, we would have had no questioning his ability

Hardly pressure situation worthy of mention. Comes in to bat with the score at 149-2 and less than 50 runs from England's total. That is just about the most relaxing environment a #4 batsman can come out to bat in, so i don't see how this can be considered anything but a fairweather knock from Tendy. Still, atleast he has his token fifty for the worshippers to go nuts over the God who's long since fallen from the heavens. if Tendulkar fails to average atleast 50 in this tour, he should be dropped from the Tests or he should have the decency to accept reality and retire. He was the only maharathi in Indian batting lineup for years but right now, he is not even a regular rathi in performance- an old, over the hill player capable of the occasional knocks in Tests but still good enough to merit a spot in the less challenging ODIs.

and who pray tell, should we give a knock before him? Tendulkar has scored 2 100s and a 91 in his last 4 matches. Yes two of them were BAN, but runs are runs. You CANNOT drop a man who is making runs in his last couple of matches.

CC is a crazy. He argues simply for argument sake. Desperate to provoke people and get in to debates at any cost. This is shown by his recent anti sachin stance. As only a few weeks ago he was saying how great scahin was and he was the best etc as he was enjpying debating against the anti sachin mob. Now he has completley flip flopped and his attacking sachin as he fancies debating against the pro sachin!

Yes and that is correct- Sachin WAS great- he is a great on career terms. But Sachin no longer IS great on present terms and he is just an over-the hill former great who is a rather mediocre batsman. If Gavaskar padded up today, he would be a pretty sh!tty batsman but he'd still remain one of the alltime great batsmen. Same with Tendy, really.

Yes...the 'best' are not scratchy but authoritative and KNOW what they are doing. Sachin doesn't anymore.

I havn't flipped or flopped at all as i have explained. I'd argue with anyone who doesnt think Sachin's career is one of an alltime great batsman and i personally consider him the second best batsman after Donald Bradman to've walked the planet.But that is in the past now- he is an over the hill former great who bats like a mediocre currently and hence should be dropped.
