Without him we wouldn't had all GLORIOUS those test series victories against the GREATEST TEAM of his era - the mighty West Indians. That steller bowling average of 29. I mean come on, that just puts Allan Donald, Malcolm Marshall, Glenn McGrath, Richard Hadlee to SHAME. Not to mention his SELFLESS nature as a cricketer, retiring at EXACTLY the right moment - in 1994, keeping himself in the team not to chase that 434th wicket, but to help an up and coming speedster in Javagal Srinath learn what a great honour it is to warm the bench for a LEGEND. Tendulkar ? pffft...we never won a single ODI tournament when Tendulkar played. India never beat the best team in the world in a test series while Tendulkar played. He never scored any runs in the World Cup because of the PRESSURE. Everyone knows that, right ? My vote goes to that handsome hunk of a man, that fitness freak, Kapil Dev...no one could ever say he looks fat. Look at those chunks of MUSCLE hanging off his cheeks...DAMN !

Step 2: I am sure we can all agree that Kapil and Sachin would make it to both the teams. Step 3: Imagine a XI without either of these two players. Can we drop Sachin? Wont be easy but we can do it. We would still remain with Sunny and Dravid two all-time greats(in Tests) and a second rung that reads like Vishy, Vengsarkar, Azhar, Manjrekar, Hazare, Merchant etc etc. In LOI it would be even better with likes of Ganguly, Azhar, Dravid, Sehwag, Yuvraj etc etc. Step4: Now imagine either of these two teams without Kapil. Right. The person most infallible for Indian team - Kapil Dev. Greatest ever. xxx

By the way do name me the Greatest cricketer of any other country that has so much impact on his selection as Kapil has for India. Would Australian team be the same without Bradman? Would NZ team be as good without Hadlee? Would Pakistan team be as good without Imran? Right. xxx

Interms , pride he bought to the country in being the world's best batsman , the sheer magic of his batting at its peak and the joy it gave it to people , the number of youngsters he has inspired into the game of cricket , I say Sachin is head and shoulder ahead of Kapil. And even within pure cricketing contexts , Sachin at his peak was miles ahead of Kapil at his peak.

Kapil brought India to the cricketing world stage and brought cricket into ur homes.... you guys have no clue, how odi cricket was followed in india pre-83 WC... this was almost 10 yrs after it started and tht was bcos we never won a match.... Kapil with his dashing captaincy and flair in bowling and batting change the outlook of indian cricket....

(Viv, Imran, Marshall, Hadlee, Lloyd, etc.. all rated way above him. For srt, he's been widely acknowledged as the best player of his generation.

You have a different way of looking at it and thats quite fine by me. This could also be a generational thing since I am guessing you never got a chance to see Kapil in full glory as I did. Trust me when I say this. As an Indian cricket fan there was no sight as good as watching Kapil in full flow. There is no hyperbole in that statement. Where I give credit to Sachin is his sheer consistency. A superb batsman he paced himself as good as any other player in 90s. But even though Kapil scored less than half of the runs as Sachin did his impact was as good if not more. His blinders(he scored at 90 plus in an era where a SR of 75 was considered HOT, even Sreekanth did not score at 75!) won India matches when all seemed lost. Today when people talk of India unable of accelerating in mid to late overs, they fail to realize that was never a problem in 80s, thanks to Kapil. As a bowler Kapil ranks easily as the greatest paceman we produced. If for a moment we think he was not the best of his time(as Sachin is) it should also be thought of as the sheer amount of competition back then. I mean how can you top Marshall and Hadlee?? Again I have seen them both and trust me if they played today their stats would be even better. Would Sachin be the numero one if he played in 80s? We dont know but I find it hard to beleive he would top Sunil Gavaskar or Viv Richards. The latter, in particular, would have been more than a handy match. I am not going over the top when I say that 80s cricket were pure gold and today's cricket somehow doesnt match up. Then again I could be a little bias as well. :wink_smile: xx
yoda Posted July 27, 2007 Posted July 27, 2007 good simple point system there Yods .... but IMHO cannot allocate the same points (atleast for wickets ) for both Tests & ODIs I can find out the bowling avg over ALL Tests played todate and we can use that. Getting wickets in ODIs is a bit easier. I agree. I think it should be more like 25 per test and 20 per ODI.
