Ultimate_Game Posted March 22, 2012 Posted March 22, 2012 To me selectors like Srikkanth are nothing but glorified cheerleaders. Now our chief selector has come up with the following statement... Chief cricket selector Kris Srikkanth said it was for batting maestro Sachin Tendulkar to decide when he should end his international career. Calls for retirement of the senior players have strengthened after the team's disastrous tour of England and Australia. Rahul Dravid retired from international cricket earlier this month and there is speculation on when Tendulkar, who was surprisingly picked for the Asia Cup, will call it a day after finally achieving his 100th international century in Dhaka last week. Srikkanth, while praising Tendulkar for the landmark century, said whether to retire or not should be the batting maestro's personal decision. "Let Sachin only decide about it," said Srikkanth, who has come under flak for the team's poor run since winning the World Cup last year. Here's the link to the article... http://www.hindustantimes.com/Cricket/CricketNews/Let-Sachin-decide-about-retirement-Srikkanth/Article1-829211.aspx My question is simple. If players can decide for themselves when to be in the team or not, and which games to play and which ones not to, why bother with the selectors? As a selector it's your job to select the team and if you feel Tendulkar should be in the team, fine select him but at least have the balls to defend the decision based on cricketing decisions than come up with this sort of stuff. Can you imagine Aussie chief selector ever saying that it's up to Ponting to decide when to hang up his boots and we will continue selecting him? How will we ever be a force to be reckoned with on a consistent basis when we have BCCI officials and selectors like Srikkanth who just go with the popular opinion and have no balls to make tough calls.
saket123 Posted March 22, 2012 Posted March 22, 2012 1. Sachin is not just any other player 2. Ponting is not in the same league as Sachin. 3. We are Indians.. and respecting successful and acomplished seniors is part of our culture. :giggle: To me selectors like Srikkanth are nothing but glorified cheerleaders. Srikanth was commenting on - Let the players decide when to retire. How is it related to your question? Problem with comprehension or some psychological bias?
Ultimate_Game Posted March 22, 2012 Author Posted March 22, 2012 1. Sachin is not just any other player 2. Ponting is not in the same league as Sachin. 3. We are Indians.. and respecting successful and acomplished seniors is part of our culture. :giggle: And that's why I am saying with such a culture we won't be a force to be reckoned with on a consistent basis. If you want to pick Sachin sure do tat but at least do that based on cricketing reasons and not just spout "Sachin will retire when he wants to... blah blah blah" It's Sachin's prerogative when to retire for sure and if he wants he may not even do so till he's 60 and nobody can do anything regarding the same. But I do expect selectors to do their job and pick a team based on performance.
yoda Posted March 22, 2012 Posted March 22, 2012 Well he is scared of the mob which is capable of physically harming him if he dares to drop Sachin. Haven't you seen the anger in some of the posters here who are almost ready to bite anyone who says anything remotely negative about Sachin? Remember, these are the supposedly educated ones. :winky: The least Srikkanth could have said is he deserves selection based on his contribution.
Magneto Posted March 22, 2012 Posted March 22, 2012 oh now I want to have a samosa :nervous: :giggle:

The selectors job is to pick the best playing XI, if it doesn't feature Tendulkar so be it. Only timid selectors would come out and say such a thing and therefore, have lost objectivity and compromised team interests. However, if things go this way soon we will have Sachin deciding whether RBI wants to hike their interest rates too. Reason - "He has dedicated 20 years of life ..."
Desi Cartman Posted March 22, 2012 Posted March 22, 2012 Go to Indian Cash & Carry in Cupertino in an hour' date=' they will have yummy freshly made Samosas. [/quote'] wow that place is like 15 mins from my office but I am in SF today :wall:
saneindian Posted March 22, 2012 Posted March 22, 2012 The same Cheeka talked Dada into retirement. So it's not like he cannot handle that. Sachin is just too big a name for any selector. Kapil, Gavaskar, Dravid, Kumble all retired on their own terms and Sachin will not be any exception.

IMO we were lucky Gavaskar, Dravid and Kumble went at the right time and in fact Gavaskar could have carried on for a couple more years. Hope SRT doesn't go the Kapil way, and am hoping Sreekanth will at least have the balls to drop Laxman
GautiMaan Posted March 22, 2012 Posted March 22, 2012 Forget having guts,Selectors are a bunch of morons these days.Selecting Rp singh, sending cheeka jr to aus.just some of their great decisions.

I haven't seen a worse act of nepotism and how Sreekanth managed to remain a selector is amazing. I was surprised media didn't go after him for that selection as Aniruddha isn't even in the state team and was deemed to be good enough to tour Aus with the A team :omg:

How eactly are the "selectors" selecting a team when they don't even know the format of the tourney? :omg: I mean can you even imaine how the meeting woud have started "Boys let's pick a team in 15 mins as I have to go watch a movie. And let's assume it's a odi tourney". 2. Secondly, once they figured out it wasn't a odi tourney, how difficult was it to recall a player and send a player who deserved to be there in the first place? 3. Anirrudha didn't even deserve to be selected in the shorter format. It's not as if he was breaking records of all sorts in the shorter format. His only claim to fame is that he is part of CSK and that too probably due to his dad. This essentially highlights why we need better selectors and why we can'tget better with such people at the helm.
